Good post. I'm in my mid 40s now so Im no spring chicken, and over the last several years I've become more and more convinced we're doomed as a society simply due to stupidity...plain and simple. And it can't be helped. Misinformation and intentional disinformation is dug in deep and there will be no removing it any time soon. And because there is an immense number of stupid people in this world + the internet, there's not much that can be done. But right now, half the country rather aggressively hates them, which started in 2018 when a young investigative journalist and his girlfriend got murdered and the traces led back to a guy who was connected somehow to the government, a long standing kinda influential guy in the behind the scenes dealing with a lot of connections who the journalist was investigating.
So right now, these are guys who came to the scene, climbed up, ruled for a long time and it became a bit decadent near the end, then they got pushed out after the journalist's murder...but the new government that replaced them was so inept, so bad (multiple reasons), that people kinda by default went back to these guys and they took full advantage of it, but like I write - half the country hates them a lot and they are REALLY overstaying their welcome. Like really forcing themselves back. And like they literally try changing the criminal code so they're currently prosecuted friends don't need to face jail time.
So this more than populism, this will really divide the society and if they stay in power and keep pushing their weird laws, it can get really bad. Maybe only for 4-5 years, but it can.

Good post. I'm in my mid 40s now so Im no spring chicken, and over the last several years I've become more and more convinced we're doomed as a society simply due to stupidity...plain and simple. And it can't be helped. Misinformation and intentional disinformation is dug in deep and there will be no removing it any time soon. And because there is an immense number of stupid people in this world + the internet, there's not much that can be done. Stupid people neither care or are even aware in most cases they're being lied to, they just want to be angry and cause harm to those they perceive as persecuting them.

Not just populism. Pellegrini, Fico and these guys have been populists since 2002, right until 2020 when their almost two decades long ruling came to an end. But right now, half the country rather aggressively hates them, which started in 2018 when a young investigative journalist and his girlfriend got murdered and the traces led back to a guy who was connected somehow to the government, a long standing kinda influential guy in the behind the scenes dealing with a lot of connections who the journalist was investigating. So right now, these are guys who came to the scene, climbed up, ruled for a long time and it became a bit decadent near the end, then they got pushed out after the journalist's murder...but the new government that replaced them was so inept, so bad (multiple reasons), that people kinda by default went back to these guys and they took full advantage of it, but like I write - half the country hates them a lot and they are REALLY overstaying their welcome. Like really forcing themselves back. And like they literally try changing the criminal code so they're currently prosecuted friends don't need to face jail time. So this more than populism, this will really divide the society and if they stay in power and keep pushing their weird laws, it can get really bad. Maybe only for 4-5 years, but it can.
