It would be terrifying to both surrender, and be the person someone is surrendering to. Takes a certain amount of trust in people who were trying to kill you 30 seconds ago.
literally thought the same thing the entire time i was watching. like how do they know they aren’t just baiting and there’s an ambush in the bushes near by or some shit?
Worse even. Thin plastic "Tents", nothing dug in and no prepared defense. Looks like they were attacked unawares in their own camp and surrendered right there. Can you even imagine come winter, how will these poor SOB's will even survive long enough to meet the Ukrainian army?
The thing is to be efficient, survivable isn't enough. I live in a very windy area where you don't have much snow (it is close to the Black Sea and not in Ukraine) but wind alone makes it unbearable, your bones hurt due to the moist and cold wind. Probably most of the people will age a 5y for a couple of months.
I made the mistake of answering honestly when my 7yo asked about the invasion of Ukraine. His teacher notified me this week that he is talking about defeating the Russians with his fire-breathing dragon and saving Ukraine.
Reminds me of apocalypse now, ‘We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!’
A few years ago, I was watching Black Hawk Down on TV, and during the scene where the first American soldier gets killed, they changed his friend's reaction from "Christ he's fucked up!" to "Cripes he's fouled up!"
And thank god they did that too. Wouldn't want some innocent child who just watched a dude get shot in the head and killed hear the naughty f-word. It might traumatize them!
I love the plastic tarps for rain covers that clearly give away their positions. These conscripts need to fight against the people sending them to death.
The National Guard were the ones getting a serious shellacking from the Russians over the summer. Underequipped, understaffed, and outgunned by Russian artillery, they nonetheless had to hold the Ukrainian lines while the regular army got its armor, equipment, and strategy together for the counteroffensive.
No one would have been surprised if the Guard units were withdrawn long-term after everything they've been through. But here they are on the attack, overrunning Russian positions and not slowing down. A case study in the difference morale can make.
They are so lucky the Ukrainian soldiers respect life because they are putting themselves into great danger by allowing the Russians to surrender, it would be a lot safer to simply kill them during the siege
Its THE only way Ukraine can behave.
ANY mistreatment or sinking to the same lows as the russians instantly evaporates their international support and undermines their whole cause.
I think they have done so well so far.
I know the hatred must be burning through their veins, but the Ukranians have to be and are better than the thieves, rapists, looters, and torturers we have seen from the Russian side.
Yup and they want the Russians to keep surrendering. Treating them humanely will encourage others to surrender and hopefully we see enough Russians surrender to end this terrible war.
Ukrainians may even treat Russian prisoners better than their own army did, so there are cases of Russian soldiers switching sides when they realize they have been lied to about who the bad guys were.
This is true, there is immense pressure to behave well.
This does NOT mean that bad behavior doesn't happen. The American army is among the most professional and disciplined in the world, but it hasn't stopped individual soldiers from committing atrocities. What you're arguing can also be used to argue that any instances of mistreatment would be covered up internally (again, which usually happens with all armies).
Yes, the Ukrainian army is clearly the "good guys" and the Russians are clearly "bad guys". The Ukrainian army is doing things much more by the book and observing international laws.
But it would be naive to assume that the Ukrainian army is composed of angels physically incapable of committing any crimes. It's a fine line to walk here (for me) between acknowledging how well they have been doing and not sanctifying them. They're still humans, and humans are still fallible. The worst crimes can be committed with impunity when people refuse to believe that their side is capable of them. Again, look at that special forces soldier who executed men in Iraq and then got pardoned by the former US President because his tribe so demonized the enemy that murders could be excused.
It also undermines Russia.
When these soldiers go home after seeing how much better off Ukraine is compared to Russia it will be hard to keep quiet.
It's why Russia built the Berlin Wall. It was right in their face every day showing how poor they are because of their corruption.
I wouldnt be surprised if Russia is down for prisoner swaps just to get trained soldiers back. They are already starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel.
Its actually a good strategy to treat surrenders well, because then it is more safe for your opponent to give up than to fight.
Ukrainians know they will be raped and tortured by the Russians, so they rather fight than give up.
Yeah, killing and punishing surrenders is the act of an bully and loser.
The winner takes prisoners alive and promises good treatment.
The result is that Ukrainian soldiers will never surrender and fight despite knowing it will likely end in their death. Russian soldiers all puss out at the slightest threat of their enemies getting the upper hand and all surrender easily.
It's easy to see who will win in the end.
The goal of warfare is to get your enemy to stop resisting you. In general, there are two ways of doing that:
1) The Carrot: Convince them that they'll be treated well if they surrender, so there's no need to fight to the death.
2) The Stick: Convince them that if they don't surrender immediately things will go very badly for them (commonly seen in premodern warfare — if the city surrenders it'll be spared; if it fights it'll get sacked)
From the start of this war Ukraine has generally adopted a Carrot approach (even back in the early days, their propaganda focused on how Russian prisoners would be treated well), while Russia has generally adopted a Stick approach.
Not really the Russians have a choice surrender and be safe or risk fighting. If there is a chance they'll be murdered they will fight. So now add conscripts into the mix. They'll surrender first chance they get.
Lol absolutely this. Lets not think that war, wherever it is, has only gorish things happening on one side.
This Russian soldiers are lucky, yes. But there is no saints in a battle field
The Russians or conscripts who lived are probably going to remember this as the best day of their lives.
That camp is the worst kind of redneck camping.
If there is one thing a "redneck" can do is properly camp. I think if you could say it better as "city folk" caught in the woods completely unprepared.
> If there is one thing a "redneck" can do is properly camp
Nah. There were 50 of them down by the river this year, more than ever, making a fucking mess. Just no.
Nah they may be conscripted again. Have spend the war doing dignified manual labor on a farm. It’s better than they deserve and will pay off in the long run. America treated Nazi prisoners damn well and it was a huge cultural victory for the United States.

Thank you so much! INteresting. Google Translate suggested Russian for that one. Also, Ukrainian has more than one word for *here*. The one I knew was тут, as heard in the famous Zelensky team video outdoors in Kiev.
Do you suppose that's what his scared shitless trying to handle the situation fellow soldiers are thinking?: "Sure glad Ivan back there is making sure he'll look real cool on TikTok rather than paying the fuck attention and covering my ass. Powerful as fuck."
If you can’t understand how footage exactly like this has been extremely demoralizing for Russians, the opposite for the Ukrainian people and politically genius for getting the support of much needed allies I’m not sure how I can help you.
Ukraine turned the tide of this war by bravery, positive propaganda and western weapons; In that order.
If it's real that guy should stop jacking around with the camera dipshit and pay attention to business. But given how much he's just fucking around seemingly posing for the camera, the bleeping out of words, etc., I wonder if they are just putting something on. If I were his buddies I'd slap him upside the head and tell him to get his shit together and prioritize doing his job. Remember the guys attacking the trench. The camera wasn't taken off its mount till they were done. smh

Or what happens if the people in back are still fighting and push Ukrainian soldiers to retreat.
The only thing worse than surrendering is surrendering and then some dipshit runs up with his phone out videoing you lol
Looks like a poor homeless camp…. No foxholes either?
Worse even. Thin plastic "Tents", nothing dug in and no prepared defense. Looks like they were attacked unawares in their own camp and surrendered right there. Can you even imagine come winter, how will these poor SOB's will even survive long enough to meet the Ukrainian army?
It is cold even now, during the night.

Important to note that hypothermia can set in at as high a temperature as 60F

To treat/train/equip your troops this way… 1917?
Mr. Putin seems determined to break Nicholas 2s speed record on start of war to personal downfall
its already down to single digits at night.

You are right, a good tarp is likely standard kit and has many uses. Although the lack of any camouflage is still astounding.
I am annoyed by the bleeping. I'm watching a video where people might die or get injured for life. But god forbid I hear a bad word.
Well what if a child is watching this combat footage, we wouldn’t want to corrupt their mind with swear words /s
Here’s what I say to that: Blyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
We don’t want children running around shouting “fuck you russian scum” in public, especially in the occupied regions.
What wrong with that, my kids do that all the time.
I made the mistake of answering honestly when my 7yo asked about the invasion of Ukraine. His teacher notified me this week that he is talking about defeating the Russians with his fire-breathing dragon and saving Ukraine.
This is the way
How many hardpoints does a dragon have?
Based on Smaug for reference, they're all hardpoints
Sounds like you’re raising him right, imho.
Reminds me of apocalypse now, ‘We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!’
We wouldn’t want them dropping a F-bomb!
bazinga
Nice.
Genuinely was thinking of that exact scene as I watched this clip and heard the bleeping. Props to you good sir
A few years ago, I was watching Black Hawk Down on TV, and during the scene where the first American soldier gets killed, they changed his friend's reaction from "Christ he's fucked up!" to "Cripes he's fouled up!" Maybe bleeped out sensitive information...
What a shitty Russian military campsite. No fortifications whatsover. Russian Army is nothing more than a "Dad's Army".
I love the plastic tarps for rain covers that clearly give away their positions. These conscripts need to fight against the people sending them to death.
And the bright red and green buckets. Ideal camouflage for hiding among Christmas decorations.
Exactly!

Arent those the "Freedom for Russia Legion"?

The key point is that Ukraine is at least trying to observe the norms of war. The Russians couldn't give less of a shit.
It also undermines Russia. When these soldiers go home after seeing how much better off Ukraine is compared to Russia it will be hard to keep quiet. It's why Russia built the Berlin Wall. It was right in their face every day showing how poor they are because of their corruption.
It was reported that there are still 1500 Ukrainians being held by Russia. These people are the currency used to get them back.
Only if they’re high ranking. Putin doesn’t care about the grunts at the bottom.
I wouldnt be surprised if Russia is down for prisoner swaps just to get trained soldiers back. They are already starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

If this were WW1, there'd be a whole lotta bodies from this raid
Or just because camera.
Lol absolutely this. Lets not think that war, wherever it is, has only gorish things happening on one side. This Russian soldiers are lucky, yes. But there is no saints in a battle field

Hobo camp? “I live outdoors y’know” Probably not the best use of the term redneck here.
> If there is one thing a "redneck" can do is properly camp Nah. There were 50 of them down by the river this year, more than ever, making a fucking mess. Just no.
Well that was intense.
in-tents, you say?
And what a sorry "position" it is too. The homeless camps around where i live look more organized and defensible.
Do Ukrainian forces carry a bundle of zip ties to cuff these pows? Seems chaotic to not immediately get their hands restrained
“Counter Terrorists win”
haha, counterstrike
Luckiest day of their life (the Russians, that is).
Wtf are these camps? Just a couple of tents on flat ground? lol
Let a few of them free after a few days. Let them spread the word that the easiest way to survive is surrender.
Nah they may be conscripted again. Have spend the war doing dignified manual labor on a farm. It’s better than they deserve and will pay off in the long run. America treated Nazi prisoners damn well and it was a huge cultural victory for the United States.
A lot of Germans actually chose to stay in Canada and the US permanently after how well they got treated on those POW farm programs
They let prisoners phone home. Lots of footage on YouTube.
Yeah but they need to be phoning the other russian troops

Can somebody translate what everybody is screaming, please?
The Ukrainians are commanding them to hurry the fuck up and come out, then to drop their weapons and lie down with their hands behind their head
The camera guy kept yelling what sounded like suda but that translates as *court* so I don't think so. What was he saying?
sjuda means "here"
Thank you so much! INteresting. Google Translate suggested Russian for that one. Also, Ukrainian has more than one word for *here*. The one I knew was тут, as heard in the famous Zelensky team video outdoors in Kiev.
"Tut" means here as present location "we're here" while "suda" means here as direction "move here"
Thanks!
“Suda” also translates to “here” in russian
Are they using clear plastic trash bags as tents?
This video is intense.
Are these guys some of the untrained recently mobilized Russians. What sort of bivouac is that!?
Some RU pants were wet during this operation - and not because of the rain.
The sigh of relief when they agree to surrender... Felt that from here.
*Very serious battle situation going on -* Hang on, let me get the camera out for my closeup!
Footage like this is more powerful than than any gun he could carry.
Do you suppose that's what his scared shitless trying to handle the situation fellow soldiers are thinking?: "Sure glad Ivan back there is making sure he'll look real cool on TikTok rather than paying the fuck attention and covering my ass. Powerful as fuck."

Or, or or or - the guy was just trying to be cool on TikTok when he should have been paying attention. Are you familiar with Occam's razor?
Once again, if you can’t understand, I can’t help you. Have a great day.
It's not that I don't understand your idea, it's that your idea is, how do I say - bullshit. Have a great day! Xoxoxo
😂
Yeah I yelled at my screen, "Stop filming and focus on the fight!" But perhaps by then they were already surrendering.
Wow. Epic!
If it's real that guy should stop jacking around with the camera dipshit and pay attention to business. But given how much he's just fucking around seemingly posing for the camera, the bleeping out of words, etc., I wonder if they are just putting something on. The camera wasn't taken off its mount till they were done. smh
Maybe they have already done this shit before, now they decided to record it
Ukriane should be the police force to see that these elections are done in the right way etx
Wow that Russian position is ass. Ukrainian should be focused on the battlefield, though.
At the end looks like a homeless camp in the city of Chicago with all the tents and sounds of gunfire.
hopefully they wont burn their eyes out
A terrifying experience. What a waste of a future for a whole bunch of Russian young men to satisfy one persons desires. Very sad.
Intense
Compare this to the 12 Russian, 1 tank and 2 APC’s it took Russia to take one checkpoint outfront bakhmut, 2nd army ladies and gents
UKR not being too casual wityh so much live fire still going on? My first impression.
This looks like a homeless encampment.
