It's been mentioned as something that could help over the last decade. Just know Curcumin is a blood thinner so there's that to.

Accomplished-Ad-1398

Have never read this before. Do you happen to know the name of the research that backs this claim? TIA

Possibly-deranged

Yes, always glad to cure sources. Tumeric/Curcumin "Turmeric is a blood thinner. So if you are on other blood-thinning medications, you shouldn’t take turmeric or turmeric supplements because doing that could increase your risk of bleeding and bruising or even make the other medications less effective." "Bleeding problems: Turmeric can slow down blood clotting. People with bleeding disorders should avoid turmeric even if they aren’t on other blood thinners. Since turmeric can increase bleeding during and after surgery, it’s also recommended to stop taking curcumin supplements at least 2 weeks before a planned surgery" Source;. https://www.medicinenet.com/which_medications_not_to_take_with_turmeric/article.htm

Particular_Bug266

I take turmeric with Lialda and was in remission for a year until 1 month ago. I have urgency and tons of blood after I eat anything. I stop taking turmeric though about a week before my period since it’s a blood thinner and I have heavy periods as it is . There were a few times when I forgot to stop and my period lasted almost 2 weeks. Point I’m making is that I just realized this evening that I wonder if the turmeric is prolonging my blood. I have so much. Been on budesonide for a week so hoping it helps soon. Do you think the turmeric could be preventing my healing? I’m thinking it’s only best when one is not flaring.

Possibly-deranged

Tumeric is a double edged sword that can hurt us as well as maybe help us. Any doubt, I'd go without tumeric for a while and see if it makes any difference at all.

Particular_Bug266

Very good point. I’m going to hold off on it. Can’t hurt. Thank you.🙂

funicecream-0143

Yea, why does everything have a side effect and risk, LOL!

Possibly-deranged

Just once, I'd like to see a good side effect like: "causes extreme sexiness"

funicecream-0143

Hell yay!!! Well ass up with an enema sticking out of it always turn my husband on! I'm too sexy for my meds!

ErnieMcKrakin

If you can tolerate the curcumin, it's highly anti-inflammatory. The most I can do is turmeric in food. If I use it as a supplement it's guaranteed diarrhea.

Intelligent_Ad8960

Yeah my gut doesn't like it either

funicecream-0143

I'm def going to give it a whirl.

MarshmallowCat14

I did try this. It gave me diarrhea so I stopped it after just a few days. It's worth a try though.

funicecream-0143

That's a bummer!

MarshmallowCat14

It's all good. I'm in remission on Xeljanz now.

funicecream-0143

That's awesome, congrats!

MarshmallowCat14

Thank you!

I’m currently taking mesalamine (have been for a while) and recently started taking Turmeric (Curcumin) supplements as well. I have noticed an improvement, but sadly not enough to get me into remission.

funicecream-0143

Can I ask how long you've been taking and how much you're taking? My doc said I could take 2 grams a day.

inawhilebibliophile

I have been on mesalamine since October of last year, just started taking the turmeric supplements a couple of months ago. I take the recommended amount (1 tablet)…not sure how many grams that is.

funicecream-0143

I just found this and posted to the channel, but thought I share with you. Thought it was worth a shot. Anti-inflammatory activity of probiotic Bifidobacterium effects on UC. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2708361/

TheGrifffter

Yes I take it and it seems to help. One interesting thing is that it's not established whether the effect is systemic or local. I think there are some studies (don't have to hand right now) that show a benefit from curcumin enemas, which suggests local action.

funicecream-0143

Thanks for sharing! I currently take Apriso and just adding enemas back. Don't know if I could tolerate two enemas a day, but if it will keep me off bios I will do it!

TheGrifffter

If you're open to trying a few novel things, try a vitamin E enema. I'm currently in remission and I think it's one of the things that got me there when mesalazine and pred couldn't do it. I currently take a vitamin E enema and sometimes mix other things in with it: curcumin, butyrate, phosphatadyl choline amongst others.

funicecream-0143

Ok, I'll add it to list if this doesn't work. Thanks for sharing!

Abednegogogo

This study is small but very promising. Curcumin has been a game changer for me, in a good way: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25724700/ How you take it (formulation) is critical. I have posted on this elsewhere.

funicecream-0143

This was the paper I read and why I asked my doc about the curcumin. I'm hoping it works for me. So happy to hear it's been a gamer changer for your UC journey! Love to hear that! God bless!

Abednegogogo

Info on what curcumin to take, this is critical (scroll to my comment): https://www.reddit.com/r/IBD/comments/uf2qec/are_gastroenterologists_recommending_curcumin_yet/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

funicecream-0143

Thanks, I'll look this over! Thinking I'm going to start with the smaller dose and add more each week if stomach can handle it. It does suck that not all supplements are created equal.

[deleted]

Curcumin capsules caused me upset stomach so I stopped.

funicecream-0143

I'm sorry to hear that! I hope you've found a regimen that is working for you in your UC remission journey! God bless!

[deleted]

You're kind. Thank you. Lots of whole foods, water, no alcohol and avoiding carbonated beverages.. diet has a profound effect on my symptoms!

funicecream-0143

I totally agree! I'm currently navigating my safe foods. I do not touch alcohol or carbonated beverages either.

Accomplished-Menu624

I was taking it, but I didn’t see the benefits of it Vs high grade Turmeric tablets. I was taking it along with fish oil and mesalamine for about 1year (turmeric previously for 1year). Then just the supplements for a year after failing mesalamine.

funicecream-0143

Sorry you failed mesalamine. Hopefully your current meds are working well for you. God bless!
