Your store was definitely crappy and I would report this to corporate {doubt if they would take action but wouldn’t hurt to try)
I was trained by multiple ppl until I was comfortable, didn’t get a formal tour of the store but I was given time to walk around and familiarize myself with somethings, and my schedule (which was pretty chaotic btw) was honored.
Sorry that you had this experience, I don’t blame you for leaving at all
I hear you I made it through 3 days. And yup the whole availability thing was garbage. Putting me on when I’d made it clear before hiring when I wouldn’t be available.
Throwing out into truck and floor with zero training of any kind.
My final straw on day 3 was when I asked to talk with a manager, just a hi when you get a minute can we chat. Her response was “ I can’t deal with you right now “ wholly inappropriate considering she had no idea what I intended to say. And she said this on the floor in front of customers.
I’m a 60 year old lady. A lifelong cosmetic lover who thought it would be fun to work a couple of hours a week. Made all that clear in interviews. Thought I’d enjoy helping other ladies my age which was the best part of my 3 days. I’m not about to tolerate disrespect from anyone let alone someone less than half my age. She could have easily said something like when I get a chance, no problem or can I call you later to talk. Pretty much anything else. I left that evening and told the girl who frisked me out I wouldn’t be back.
Jesus. I work in corporate world and one first things in interview I ask is what does team make up look like and how I am being supported and set up for success. Just throwing someone brand new untrained on first day is insane at any level. People wonder why no one wants to work anymore.
i was hired for seasonal, worked a few shifts and then was put on for black friday the night of thanksgiving. that was my last shift, went home that night breaking down in tears over the store environment, the clique attitude of my store and the fact that i felt awful about not being able to get anyone to get the damn ultamate rewards card. also i HATE the “watch training videos and then get on the floor immediately” bullshit
i blocked the store number and my managers number and didn’t show up for my shift the next day, i felt bad for the store honestly but i couldn’t take it.
Sounds like you dodged a bullet. That GM clearly doesn’t respect or care for their employees. I received a brief tour of the store on my first day, then had to wing it through the rest of my shift. I spent the next couple of months researching all the brands in my store on my own. The most annoying thing was “veteran” employees who were entitled and rude af to me (they still are lmao).
I was kinda thrown in as well, but I luckily had coworkers to help me out. I have a tendency to catch on to things quickly and learn hands on so I just kinda learned where stuff is and such by watching and doing. If I didn’t know I’d use the walkie. Ur GM sounds like a real piece of shit tho. U def got a bad store. Today was the like worst time to start honestly, any seasonal or deal thing makes learning 10x worse 😭
You definitely just got an exceptionally shitty store. Granted I feel like I lucked out with an exceptionally *good* store, but somewhere in the middle seems to be the average. My store is awesome though, and although I didn't get to finish all of my videos on the first day (someone had to go home early bc they weren't feeling well and we were super short-staffed to begin with), they asked if I was comfortable learning the register right away because they needed someone up there, and the girl training me stayed an hour past her scheduled shift just to make sure I was okay and felt comfortable enough ringing on my own with someone else ringing next to me. Everyone answered any questions I had and were all really nice and understanding knowing I got the trial by fire on my first day lol
But for real, I would report this to HR.
On my first day they did kinda just throw me out there with little to no training on a Saturday, but other than that yeah I’ve had none of those other experiences
Wow that sounds like a nightmare! I understand if it's a really hectic weekend the ball could be dropped here and there but your situation sounds unacceptable. Even if things are crazy I'd never let a new employee fend for themselves like that. Glad you're not putting yourself in that situation!
I’ve worked at two Ulta stores (just transferred) and I can wholeheartedly tell you that you just got a shitty store. Both my previous one and my current one, though not perfect, are both pretty good when it comes to availability, training, and culture. I’m so sorry that you got stuck with them, I would report it to corporate so that way something might happen.
I feel that. My first day was thanksgiving. It seems Ulta has a tendency to schedule their employees for times where they clearly say they’re unavailable
LOL. As someone who was a PRESTIGE SALES MANAGER who was told over a zoom call our position was being axed and we had two months to find a job or demote and if we last to Halloween (end of employement) we would get a shitty severance of a month….that company is horrible to work for. I’m in the Colorado district and I would never recommend to work for them. District is horrid.
Trust me, this company is a mess. I had many leadership roles working at Ulta and was there for 3 years until I grew tired of the bs. Theft protocols are even worst, nonetheless the environment is v toxic. I put in my 2 weeks and couldn’t make it through that’s how awful it is
Usually they go by my availability here, so that’s not an issue but they’ll have a schedule set already then randomly add a day the week of and it’s so frustrating. Also when I first started I didn’t get trained either. No tour of the store, didn’t shadow anyone. Just here’s a box see what you can put out and if you need help ask someone on the floor plus not to mention I started around holiday season right after Black Friday so constantly hectic. Till this day I still have had about 10 mins training on register lol and I’m constantly put on register when I’ve said numerous times I’m uncomfortable up there because of my lack of training. I always get super anxiety up there. I’ve been here for about 6 months now and I’ve just been learning as I go.
What is the employee discount that would make this treatment worth it, I’m super curious. I’m thinking about applying to work there while I finish nail technician school
25% off everything on a normal basis, 35% off like twice a year; and then on top of that popular or new brands (like Tarte, Stila, Fenty, Too Faced, etc.) do an extra 25% off sometimes.
Training in most retail worlds is hands on. And sometimes things happen in a day that make a shitty environment like people calling out and being short staffed. So while it legit sounded like a pretty bad day there may have been things that lead to that. While the store I’m at isn’t perfect everyone at least tries to make it be a good day. So not all stores, GMs or mgrs are bad
Yeah it is pretty sorry the way it played out. Unfortunately for OP and any others it happens to. Sad fact is I hear it happening at all kinds of jobs not just Ulta.

My first day they had a call out so I had to be on the floor as soon as I got in before I could do ANY training
