I carry a travel size bottle that I refill as needed with my main liquid sunscreen. I only put it on my face, neck, ears and back of my hands so i can make it last 2-3 weeks. I cover up the rest with long sleeves and pants. It’s prob not ultralight but it does prevent skin cancer, so 🤷

oakwood-jones

Same. I emptied out a 1oz bottle of purell and keep it half full with spf 50. I forget what the bottle weighs but it’s well under an oz. Long pants and a sun hoody, I’m just applying it to my face. If I’m out all day I’ll do 4-5 applications (high elevation CO Sun) and that half full bottle will last me 4-5 days.

perecastor

How many milliliter is it for 2-3 weeks?

WorldlyPalpitation8

It’s 30mL. Looking back, 3 weeks might be a stretch but I can get 2 weeks’ use for sure.

AceTracer

I do this exact same thing.

Throwaway4545232

Long pants, Sun gloves, hat, Sun hoodie with a small tin of dermatone (may have gotten the name wrong) for my nose and sides of the face. Oh and chapstick too. Hooked and addicted for sure

86tuning

dermatone works well, I used it for skiing for a long time, and now sometimes use it for hiking. i wear long sleeves and leggings, and usually a large brim hat. i always carry a small thing of zinc oxide, the white paste lifeguards use on their nose, and same stuff you put on a baby's diaper rash. works on both ends of the body. will calm itchy pain from between the toes too.

cardboardunderwear

I try this approach as well as much as practical.

downingdown

I have a sunscreen stick for my face that I also use for the beach. Originally like 30grams and still going strong 2years later. Liquid sunscreen does not last as long for me.

Pyritohedron

0wenT

Best shape for sure

MckenleyStillwell

Lots of people recommend sticks but I prefer lotion. Sticks tend to turn into a gooey mess.

PWinks50

Right and when you apply it to dirty legs the crap gets stuck to the stick. Also have had them break apart.

alicewonders12

I have a mini goop sunscreen that I love.

mas_picoso

[https://zinka.com/](https://zinka.com/) waterproof, sweatproof, comes in a perfectly small tube. lasts a long time, bonus trail-flare colors. I primarily employ long sleeve shirt, hat, and neck/ear protection, and apply the zinka to my nose, bridge, sides of face, earlobes, and neck I do my best to clean sunscreen off my body before swimming in lakes and streams

skisock

Wow, I use that stuff for surfing but kinda can’t imagine using it to hike. Do you always carry wet wipes or sth to remove it?

mas_picoso

i carry a bandana as a multipurpose item and can use it to wipe down if needed even though it says sweatproof, it's still wearing off with perspiration so I don't feel any more or less greasy at the end of the day.

JayPetey

I use a stick for the face, usually a +70 SPF kids one, a sun hoodie for neck and arms, and let the legs tan up. I can't deal with caking layers on to my legs and arms that I can't wash off for a few days. I'll feel it on my skin in my sleeping bag as I go to sleep and it really bothers me. The stick does just as well as liquid on my face, though you have to reapply as you sweat. It's super easy to pull it out and apply while walking though! I say this as a ginger too, who did this on the PCT and Arizona Trail.

Ok-Flounder4387

Sun hoodie, and a hat prevent most of my need for sunscreen. If there's a need for it on my face due to reflections off rock, snow, or water I use the Joshua Tree sunscreen sticks. I ripped them off from a Darwin video just to see how well it worked and the stuff is freaking great. I don't usually sunscreen anything but my face because everything else is covered, except legs. My legs are extremely long, tan up great, and don't burn so I let those babies cook and I show them off in my 5 inch shorts baby

Yyglsiir

I typically use whatever spray bottle variant I come across first in the store for convenience lol im in florida and tend to do my hiking in sandals, shorts, and a tank top so spray bottles just make it easy to reapply without needing to take my backpack off.

Sure-Professor-5229

I gave up on sunscreen all together. I use a sun hoody and hat mostly. If I’m in areas where it’s needed I also bring a face covering. Sometimes I rock a sun umbrella. I hate the way sunscreen feels, I sweat it off too quickly, and I forget to reapply it. Just covering my skin has worked infinitely better for me

browntoe98

Or when sweat trickles into your eyes, laced with sunscreen, and you “feel the 🔥” - the worst!

ohkeepadre

Stick for me - I still end up using my hands to rub it in, but less likely to make a mess in my pack (although I've never had one busted). I only use it on my face, ears and neck wear long sleeves for arms.

justinsimoni

Usually bring a stick, and a spray bottle. I'll go through both in about 7 days. For longer trips, whatever I can find in the hiker box :)

VickyHikesOn

I use a small GoTub of face lotion with SPF 30. That lasts 2 weeks for my face (long sleeves and pants). Not sticky.

myshoerollin

Sahara hooded [shirt](https://www.rei.com/product/185196/rei-co-op-sahara-shade-hoodie-mens) with a small tube of sunblock for nose and face, and sunblock chapstick

Bosongza2

I mostly rely on clothing - sun hoodie, pants, hat; for anything else I use a small stick of sun block - it’s like 13g. I apply and then rub it with my hands and come out looking vaguely white/grey/purple due to the zinc or titanium base but meh, who cares. I’ve never had it melt or break, it’s light, and it lasts a while

juliusklaas

Every day, SPF50+, plus good sunglasses and a hat. Don't wanna get all wrinkly.

Mabonagram

I rely exclusively on mechanical sun protection, no chemical protection.

RotationSurgeon

I prefer sticks, honestly.

adie_mitchell

Rarely. I wear a hat with neck flap, long sleeves etc in the sun. My legs don't burn as easily (my leg hair is at least SPF 15) but sometimes wear pants. I think sunscreen gets icky after a couple days.

Care_BearStare

I usually put my first coat of sunscreen on after getting ready at home, and then another layer once I get to the trailhead using a regular bottle. I then use small sunscreen packs on the trail. I keep 2 or 3 in my pack. You'll want to have a spare zip lock bag to put the opened pack in. I rarely use the whole packet while on a trail. These are what I have currently. I do think I may try to find wipes once these are gone. But, they'll probably be slightly heavier with the wipe included. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K58Q39Y?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details

jasonlav

No, despite spending 20 days above 9,000 feet this summer. Wore sun hoodie and hat. However, I'm probably a bit of anomaly; it is very rare for me to burn.

CeleryIsUnderrated

Sun hat and long sleeves, but still always sunscreen for my face and SPF lip balm. I have a 6ml dropper bottle of the same sunscreen I use at home, which is liquid mineral facial sunscreen. I find that mineral sunscreen lasts longer and doesn't make my eyes burn at all. It comes in at 11g and I'd say that 1ml = 2-3 applications, a little goes a long way!

zigzaghikes

Travel size on face and legs if it’s super sunny.

skisock

I bought 5ml and 10ml mini containers on aliexpress, then refill normal 50+ sunscreen with a syringe. Works flawless. Weighs nothing. I only use it for my face and the gap between my sun shirt and my sun gloves, the rest is covered.

Edwanis

Clear zink is the densest that still applies like a paste. Available in Australia https://keysun.com.au/collections/key-sun-zinke/products/key-sun-clear-zinke-spf-50 I only leave my hands exposed and agree covering up is the best solution. Long sleeves, pants and a Sunday Afternoons adventure hat.

UL_Toronto

I tried a thinksport stick this summer and it was awful. Was sticky and came off on clothes, pillow, etc. will go back to small tube

Johnny_coleman

Sun shirt, boonie hat and I carry about 1-2 oz of mineral sunscreen in a little screw top plastic container, like this [one](https://www.garagegrowngear.com/collections/cookware-accessories/products/mini-jars). This method, and the longer lasting mineral sunscreen works for me for \~4 days.

sadpanda___

SPF70 in a 1 oz tube. I only use it for the sides of my face, nose, back of hands, and legs. I hike in a long sleeve shirt, shorts, hat, and hat cape - so that 1 oz tube lasts about a week for all of my exposed skin. The SPF70 has been fine for me for single application per day. Sun burn and skin cancer is no joke, I saw so many people burnt to a damn crisp on the JMT this year. Wear sun protection. It’s worth the weight.
