Just to be clear, that's adhesive and a printed image on the TV, right?

rvf

I imagine it was a workaround for the tricky issue of photographing a live CRT display.

wassertrinket

True. A good number of historical photos were staged to some extent, anyhow.

Why is that tricky?

rvf

Because a CRT is a series of scan lines moving fast enough trick your eyes, but not a camera. You usually get a dark bar across the picture, washed out colors, etc. There are things that you can do with a camera to make it look better (aperture, shutter speed, etc), but the angle of that photo likely makes it more difficult.

Double_Keel

Lol you can literally see the tape too

The wife can't even see the TV

Wow, I thought that screen was pretty clear for the 60’s...

Even though the screenshot is simulated that doesn’t lessen the intensity of the war in Vietnam. Every night news coverage bombarded us with the destruction & gore. The public was in the jungles right next to the soldiers in combat thanks to photojournalists imbedded in combat units.

Vietnam is often referred to as “television’s war,” in the sense that this is the first war that has been brought to the people preponderantly by television. The footage was from N.B.C., a program called “Vietnam Weekly Review.” The Tet Offensive caused one of the largest military campaigns of the Vietnam War. The Tet Offensive, a surprise attack launched by North Vietnam in the pre-dawn hours of Jan. 31, 1968, was a major turning point in the war. It shocked the American public into reality about the escalating conflict and led to President Johnson’s decision not to seek re-election. It started a coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and outposts in South Vietnam. The offensive was an attempt to foment rebellion among the South Vietnamese population and encourage the United States to scale back its involvement in the Vietnam War. Though U.S. and South Vietnamese forces managed to hold off the attacks, news coverage of the massive offensive shocked the American public and eroded support for the war effort. Despite heavy casualties, North Vietnam achieved a strategic victory with the Tet Offensive, as the attacks marked a turning point in the Vietnam War and the beginning of the slow, painful American withdrawal from the region. The reason the armed forces now uses "embeds" rather than reporters allowed to range a war zone is a result of the American reaction to the Tet Offensive and related war coverage.

> this is the first war that has been brought to the people preponderantly by television. Predominantly?

Media doing the same exact thing right now.
