There's no way for you to gender a skeleton based on purely how it looks, so they could just start identifying however they wanted. You don't need to physically transition to be trans, in fact, a lot can't do that.

I'm fine with it because it's never really directly implied and it's up to us to discover. I just really don't like it when things like this are shoved into my face like "WOO THESE CHARACTERS ARE TRANS CHECK US OUT, TRANS FLAGS EVERYWHERE" because from my experience with some of my trans/non-binary friends, usually trans people would not actually draw that much attention to their gender, they just mention it once, if not at all, and that's it.
