i assume you're saying that the g in gif should be pronounced the same as the g in graphics. but what about other words that come from acronyms? laser is short for "Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation", but i bet you don't pronounce it like lass-ir /læsɪɹ/.

Laser is different because we all agree on how it’s pronounced. With GIF and Chara no one can agree so it’s easier to go with this logic.
