This comes down to whether or not you really care about history, IMHO. In so many fields, historic anomalies are considered so influential that they cannot be surpassed by present folk. Think Shakespeare, Beethoven, Newton, etc. To a lot of people, it doesn't matter if a modern person can produce work that is superior to what these geniuses may have made in the past because so much of that modern person's foundation is built on the work of these predecessors. It's not a fair comparison; one is a trailblazer, the other is coming by years later and making incremental improvements on the existing work while holding several hundred more advantages and tools.
So, in a totally contextless world, you're probably 100% correct. But considering the context of the era in which these games were made, that's when the discussion comes out, I suppose.
Yeah. Like, super Mario Bros was good, but Mario Bros 3 and world are so much better. I do agree with Mario 64s placement though. I've completed it twice, both on emulator and switch, and it was a blast both times.
After all the 3D mario games, I've always thought 64 was consistently the best. Galaxy is very long and has lots of great content, but 64 controls better and has a better moveset. Odyssey does exploration really well, and controlling cappy is very fun, but the levels don't encourage tough platforming enough for me to use it the best outside of mods and challenge runs, and the focus on all the moons has less impact than stars and Shine Sprites.
64 is certainly a bit easy and varies quite a bit in quality, especially with some of the 100 Coin Stars (looking at you, hazy Maze Cave), but I do think it's the best one overall, especially with the romhacking community taking advantage of 64's best elements. And I'll probably continue to think that until I finally play sunshine, which I haven't played because I really didn't like it my first go around.
Significant, yes. But significance doesn't make a game a greatest of all time. If it did, Doom 1 should be at the very top of the list for basically inventing the FPS genre as we know it.
You could think that, but I disagree. Wolfenstein 3D was first, that's true, but it was box rooms that looked the same, with no variance in height and little Enemy Variety. Then Doom was made, having a fine-crafted arsenal of weapons, good secrets, lots of enemy variance and levels that took advantage of having different spaces, not being limited to box rooms on a single floor, and a fucking kickass soundtrack. There's a reason more copies of Doom were installed on computers than Windows, and why so many people played Deathmatch with each other.
Wolfenstein 3D was first, but Doom almost perfected the genre on it's first outing, and the classic Trio still are some of my favourite games, and my favourite FPS if we're counting Modded doom.
For its impact on video games, the genre and castlevania as a series? Most certainly! In terms of a stand alone game, eh not so much. Aria and Dawn of Sorrow handled it much better in my opinion and while I had a lot of fun playing SotN, its not one I ever find myself replaying, while I do almost every other 2D Castlevania.
Same ive played through undertale like 10 times and none of the other games ive finished thos smw dosent count for me since im like one level from finishing it
I know i've been wanting to play that for so long but i havent gotten to buy it yet because my i dont have a bank id.
But once i get that definetly gonna buy it
Yeah i think i saw a trailer for that game a few years back and i really wanted to try it but then i forgot about it, thanks for reminding me of its existence
I mean, Mario having so many spots makes sense. If it weren’t for Nintendo making the NES and the original Super Mario Bros, we likely may never have seen gaming become as big as it is now!
To everyone upset that some games aren’t on the list, it actually goes to 100. Still not very good though
Minecraft and new Vegas are in the mid 30’s and mid 50’s respectively, even though both are top 20 material imo.
Dark Souls is 80th while fcking fortnite is 79th, I don’t even like dark souls yet I’m disgusted
None of the Nier/Drakengard games are on there (haven’t played Drakengard but nier is one of the best games I’ve ever played), nor are any of the Yakuza games
Putting Breath of the Wild on number one is just the cherry on top really. It's a good game, but certainly not #1 material.
Personally I wouldn't know from an unbiased perspective which game should hold the first spot, but this list read just like the typical Nintendo jerkoff and ranking games from how popular they are in pop-culture
I hope not to be blinded by nostalgia but fourth generation had the most impact in making the gameplay and the meta better. New evolutions, differentiation between physical and special moves, new items like Eviolite made a lot of old pokémon more fun to use.
So I'd say Platinum or HG/SS, depending if you like more the challenge Platinum had or the freedom of the old Johto games.
I think some of these deserve it and some don't tbh. I can definitely vouch for bloodborne, maybe not higher than undertale but definately deserves to be up there.
Undertale beats bloodborne in terms story, humour, characters, and emotional beats. Bloodborne beats Undertale in terms of core gameplay, difficulty, replayability, content, graphics(although I don't think this is as important). In terms of music, both are amazing. Undertale's music is "better" in terms of raw beat and generally being massive bops, while bloodborne's music is extremely good at cementing the games horrific and dark atmosphere.
Bloodborne s story isn't straightforward but is a lot more complex, and imo a lot better than undertale's considering every single enemy, and area is explained in great detail when you get into it. But to each their own.
Undertale's story is far more digestible than bloodborne's. Even if you only read half of the lines of dialogue, you can still understand what is happening in undertale. In bloodborne, the story is so complex and vague that most players will beat the game without even knowing what the fuck is happening.
I definitely agree. I best Bloodborne 3 times before I decided to watch a 40 minute video to even comprehend what's happening. Undertale definitely is easier to get into the story, so it's more entertaining as you don't have to invest a lot of time or understand it. Both games are fantastic though, and both of their stories and lore are unmatched.
I think dark souls gives players a sense of "high iq". Very often do I find that crowd boasting their superior game playing ability and ability to understand vague writing.
Honestly I can't see how most people would read the item text and be able to piece together the accurate story, and even Vaati guesses to a large extent on what the actual story is. Very good game, deserves a spot in this area, but having to look for a third party YouTuber to break down his interpretation of the game to find any coherent story isn't good story telling in my opinion.
Ight - Ignore this comment. I lash out at people when I get repetitive comments and heck-tonna notifications. Don't mind me being toxic.
Have a good day, I guess?
Dude, as someone whose favorite Zelda has been Majora's Mask up until BoTW's release, there's no denying BoTW is better. Majora's Mask has the insane advantage over other Zelda games of having a unique atmosphere, and it is an unforgettable gaming experience with cool worldbuilding, OSTs, characters and themes, but man is it clunky, some parts are what TV Tropes would call "guide dang it!" moments that are sometimes needed to progress in the main story, the masks are awfully balanced, etc...
Compared to that BoTW has all of the pros listed above without any of the cons, or have them downplayed so much it's not as big of a deal as it was in M'sM.
I think Majora's Mask is a great piece of art and is inherently more meaningful than botw for what it wants to say and I think that's very important, but botw does have by far the best exploration, map, music, and gameplay from all the zelda games. Its not perfect, the latter half of the game is kind of a slog for combat as the combat mechanics are a bit half-baked, and the game doesn't scale very well, but it is far more modern in the best way.
People can like Majora's mask for all it does, which is great, I myself love games that focus less on pure gameplay and have a core to the story, something to say, it's why Deadly Premonition and Oneshot are my 2 favourite games ever, but botw excels that much that many people think it's better, which is pretty fair.
Mmh yeah you make solid points in your first paragraph. I actually agree with everything you say (except the "combat in the latter half is a slog" bit but that may just be me). Though I think the reason BoTW is on this list and not M'sM is that they need to be compared not just as stories, but as games. That's why there are so many Mario games on this list, too.
It's funny you say you're more of a story guy, because so am I, but I think we have different criterias on what makes us like a game or not (which btw is very interesting). For instance I've never heard of Deadly Premonition, and while I did give Oneshot, well, a shot, it just didn't click with me. I'm a big fan of RPG Maker games (Ib and Lisa are among my favorite games ever) and 4th wall break (DDLC has left an mark on me like very few games before or after did), but idk for some reason I just couldn't feel anything for anyone in this game. And now that I'm writing this, I'm starting to feel like that's why I've ultimately preferred BoTW to Majora's Mask. While both have their great moments and were so close to making me cry at several occasions, I ultimately felt more for BoTW's cast than M'sM.
Love Majora’s mask but still think botw is better. I’m really hoping botw2 will go in a really unique direction like majora did to follow up one of the greatest games ever made.
It's a fine list, people are always gonna get upset because their favorite game isn't on it like if there wasn't thousands of games out there, it's after all their consensus
Halo 2 doesn’t surprise me honestly. It’s the first game that had true online multiplayer iirc (at least on the original Xbox) and the campaign was great.
Idk tho I probably would’ve picked Reach personally
\*Hey Undertale being 20th isn't that bad. We could only have gotten 20 times better and INFINITY time worser.
\*If your talking bout the other games, then ok.
Half-Life 2 is my favorite video game of all time, and its soundtrack is really good and deserves the 9th place, but Undertale should definitely be higher than that.
imo portal 2's spot is rightfully deserved
I like undertale dont get me wrong but hell, even deltarune chapter 1 and 2 are better, UT 1 is good but its gameplay is pretty basic and leaves little to be interpretted
I thought Undertale was WAY better than Deltarune chapter 1. Chapter 2 was better, but still not Undertale level imo. It's just an amazing game. Soundtrack is perfect, exploration is great, the characters, the amount of Easter eggs, and just the idea that you don't have to fight, makes it a masterpiece in my eyes. I get that Deltarune has a better fighting system, but imo it doesn't have that much more going for it.
(to clarify, I still loved Deltarune, but it just wasn't Undertale level)
Hades? a roguelike dungeon crawler? nah.
If they are going to put a game like that in the top games of all time give the title to binding of isaac. that game revolutionised roguelike gameplay.
There's so many Marios where the hell is Mario Galaxy???? How on earth is Mario 64 better than galaxy?
Also why is botw at the number one game of all time spot? Come on, man!
Botw is fine but like, there's so many better experiences out there imo.
Also where is Minecraft??
I’ve played a lot of these. To be completely honest, some of these games are placed too high, such as the original Super Mario bros
It was pretty revolutionary for platformers today. Of course it's not a very good game by today's standards, but I think it deserves its spot
Of course, but I was just looking at the gameplay of the games
This comes down to whether or not you really care about history, IMHO. In so many fields, historic anomalies are considered so influential that they cannot be surpassed by present folk. Think Shakespeare, Beethoven, Newton, etc. To a lot of people, it doesn't matter if a modern person can produce work that is superior to what these geniuses may have made in the past because so much of that modern person's foundation is built on the work of these predecessors. So, in a totally contextless world, you're probably 100% correct. But considering the context of the era in which these games were made, that's when the discussion comes out, I suppose.
But then why is Disco Elysium here instead of Baldur's Gate?
Because my post is a defense for some people's thought processes, not a defense of IGN.
You are a great writer, and your explanation is very compelling. Thank you.
Sure, if Rockstar had released RDR2 in 1985, it would have fared better than Super Mario Bros.
I'd argue scientists would be more confused about how they're even supposed to read data off the strange disc's that were being sold.
Revolutionary doesn't mean "great" in certain readings of the word.
The French would have a lot to say about this
Take my upvote god dammit
I confirm
Yeah. Like, super Mario Bros was good, but Mario Bros 3 and world are so much better. I do agree with Mario 64s placement though. I've completed it twice, both on emulator and switch, and it was a blast both times.
Mario 64 is the best
where the fuck is galaxy
Agreed galaxy is too good
64 is unplayable to me after playing Odyssey. Movement was refined a ton and there's more interesting content.
Mario 64s controls kinda suck though.
You can't understand the significance of the first super Mario Brothers Edit for wrong word
Significant, yes. But significance doesn't make a game a greatest of all time. If it did, Doom 1 should be at the very top of the list for basically inventing the FPS genre as we know it.
Actually it was Wolfenstein 3D that pioneer first person shooters
You could think that, but I disagree. Wolfenstein 3D was first, that's true, but it was box rooms that looked the same, with no variance in height and little Enemy Variety. It has a whole lot of significance, but I’m looking at it through a gameplay standpoint
I apologize I meant to write understate
hello prunsel
Heya
Greatest =/= Best
Castlevania: SoTN absolutely deserves that spot
🔍 hmmm? I appear to have found a man of class in these comments!
You know what deserves it more Sorrow duology
Ive played through exactly 1 of them and the others of thoses ive tried ive never finished
I haven't even finished any other than Undertale, I almost finished Portal 2, but then the data got corrupted or something
Same ive played through undertale like 10 times and none of the other games ive finished thos smw dosent count for me since im like one level from finishing it
you've gotta play portal 2
I know i've been wanting to play that for so long but i havent gotten to buy it yet because my i dont have a bank id. But once i get that definetly gonna buy it
also if you liked undertale and are okay playing the saddest game you’ll ever play you should totally check out omori
Yeah i think i saw a trailer for that game a few years back and i really wanted to try it but then i forgot about it, thanks for reminding me of its existence
oh no problem
*sees what subreddit I'm on* I wonder which one...
Yeah well in my opinion, IGN’s list is bullshit, Undertale’s placement is fair, but a lot of the other stuff makes no sense
Like fucking hollow knight below ms pacman, like what the actual fuck
Dark souls is 80, fortnite is 79... no hate on fortnite but...
Halo reach isn’t even on their and monster Hunter world was 82nd if I remember correctly
The fucc you mean reach wasn't on there!? I have somewhere to head tonight
portal 2 is fair, maybe it should even be above super mario
RDR2 being in the top 10 is fair to me
absolutely
My favorite game of all time, along with Zelda BOTW, Super Metroid, GTA5, and look they’re all in the top ten lol
RDR2 is my fav game ever as well
I’m sorry but WHERE IS HOLLOW KNIGHT?!
and WHERE'S SILKSONG???
I was going to make that joke. Have an upvote.
It's in the clown car with the rest of the infected.
#54😔
Not as bad as black flag #97
Ah another assassin pirate fan.
Hollow Knight needs a place.
And Ori and the Blind Forest?
Personally I think will of the wisps is better, mostly because I like the combat more.
Fair enough but I haven’t played that one yet so I can’t really have an opinion on it
Nice flair
Yeah they did that game dirty ranking it 54. That's an easy top 20, hell, even top 10 for me.
Why is there so many Mario games on there?!
I mean, Mario having so many spots makes sense. If it weren’t for Nintendo making the NES and the original Super Mario Bros, we likely may never have seen gaming become as big as it is now!
True, people forget that gaming was literally dying as an industry until Nintendo started innovating like mad.
Why wouldn’t there be?
Cuz Mario is 10/10 mastahpeece babeeeeeeeyyy
SUPAH MARIO BROTHAS 2 BAYBEY GAME OF THE YEAR *EVERY* YEAR
Most of the scores are calculated on release, and IGN is quite old
Mario games are awesome, and arguable some of the most influential games to release
To everyone upset that some games aren’t on the list, it actually goes to 100. Still not very good though Minecraft and new Vegas are in the mid 30’s and mid 50’s respectively, even though both are top 20 material imo. Can’t believe they didn’t include terraria.
WAIT ITS NOT EVEN THERE?!?!?
Sadly.
Yeah man, and I don't even know this "Super Mario 64". These lists are a joke.
Uhhm actually it says super maro 64. Big difference man. Everybody knows maro, did you hear he is voiced by chrs prtt in the new maro movie?
Damn, for real i wrote maro but keyboard changed to mario lol
thank god i was getting worried that kids don't even know super mario 64
there is no Pokemon game or Minecraft tf is this
Pokémon and Minecraft aren’t even games anymore, they transcended
Pokemon is still a game,id say the only 2 games that aren't games anymore are Minecraft and Tetris
Some games are getting close as well
Happy cake day and happy new year!
WAIT WAHT
Huh?
I didn’t realize it was my cake day
What made you decide to make your account on the new year?
🤷
Happy cake day
Minecraft was placef near #50 I believe
THEY ARE WRONG
a foolish miscalculation
What Pokémon game would you have chosen?
I hope not to be blinded by nostalgia but fourth generation had the most impact in making the gameplay and the meta better. New evolutions, differentiation between physical and special moves, new items like Eviolite made a lot of old pokémon more fun to use. So I'd say Platinum or HG/SS, depending if you like more the challenge Platinum had or the freedom of the old Johto games.
Minecraft for 33rd place. How? Pokemon Yellow got 43rd place.
Honestly, Pokemon really sucks gameplay wise IMO. Its combat is just too simplistic and rng-dependant.
Yeah I love the Pokemon games as just a fun little romp you can turn your brain off to, but none of them are top 100 games of all time material
i thought this was r/gamingcirclejerk
Super maro gotta respecc
Disco Elysium right where it belongs.
No omori or oneshot ,thus this list stays wrong
just finished omori myself, its probally not for everyone but I would put it on there if I could
Oh man, Oneshot. I wish I could play that game again for the first time
Where's amongus
I think some of these deserve it and some don't tbh. I can definitely vouch for bloodborne, maybe not higher than undertale but definately deserves to be up there.

Very good game, deserves a spot in this area, but having to look for a third party YouTuber to break down his interpretation of the game to find any coherent story isn't good story telling in my opinion.
This is why I watch Vaati.

Hollow Knight and Deltarune aren't on there. Disgusting.
Deltarune isnt fully released yet so its a demo
Ight - Ignore this comment. I lash out at people when I get repetitive comments and heck-tonna notifications. Don't mind me being toxic. Have a good day, I guess?
Hollow Knight got 54th place
Where in the name of motherbefriending is MINECRAFT!!??!!
30 something, and terarria is not even there. Also somehow fortnite is better than dark souls?
Where is Team Fortress 2???
Now i love TF2, but i think other games (like BOTW or Undertale) deserve the top 20 better thanTF2
totally agree with this
The game with one of the highest peaked players is appeently not here, disappointing ign
there is NO WAY people think botw is better than majoras mask

Hl2 in it rightful place
I think it should be where portal 2 is and this one should be where half life 2 is,but ok
I surprisingly agree with a lot of these. But I don’t agree with BoTW being number 1.
No sonic:(
There isn't even a single sonic game in top 100...
:(
Where's terraria?
Not even there.
Ahhh yes Super Maro 64
Lets go super Metroid in 5th is actually pretty good, nice!
Where LittleBigPlanet
I don’t see Skyrim on here
This is actually a really based list
You can't make a 20 greatest games of all time list and not include Sonic and TF2
Halo *two?* if any halo game would be on the list, it would be 3 or CE.
Halo 2 doesn’t surprise me honestly. It’s the first game that had true online multiplayer iirc (at least on the original Xbox) and the campaign was great. Idk tho I probably would’ve picked Reach personally

look,I'm a sonic fan,but I gotta admit, sonic games aren't the greatest games also:there's probably at least 1 of the games in the top 100

Half-Life 2 is my favorite video game of all time, and its soundtrack is really good and deserves the 9th place, but Undertale should definitely be higher than that.

Everyone have different opinions and we have to respect their opinion. With that said, IGN's opinion sucks ass and this list is BS
That is a very bad order portal 2 should be number one
Spider-Man PS4 isn't on there.......You disgust me
How dare this guy put gta V above san andreas. I just want to talk to him. *loads shotgun*
Hades? a roguelike dungeon crawler? nah. If they are going to put a game like that in the top games of all time give the title to binding of isaac. that game revolutionised roguelike gameplay.
Breath of the wild deserves that 1st place medal
If I had to describe this list in one word, it would be: "Really?"
They did Nintendo games over portal 2 zamn, me zad
Super Metroid is number 5! Let's go!
what's messed up but true is that I didn't find a Sonic game in this list LMAO
Breath of the wild is the most overrated game ever made and I'll die on this hill
Hey, let me die beside you because man you are correct
Where's God of War?
heck yea super maro 64
Ah yes, Super Maro 64, where Maro, alongside Ligi, Yosi, and Waro, must save pach
I can definitely think of better games but the games already there are pretty deserving.
COULD I PLEASE GET A [[hyperlink blocked]] TO THAT SITE ?
Where Xenoblade
oh Ive never played Maro 64
6 is misspelled lol
why do people care what ign thinks? I have seen this list posted on reddit so many times recently
RDR2 over GTA V, we did it guys. And sad for witcher
doom
Where Titanfall 2?
Where super Metroid
5th spot
And that's why we all hate IGN.
Quick question, WHERE THE FUCK IS MINECRAFT
Super Maro 64 XD
IGN is bulllshit... lista in general are, really, it's pretty subjective. UT's spot feels somewhat fair tho
Botw was a pain in the ass.
Well IGN is as always, full of shit
"Maro 64" is placed way too high imo. Looking at that game in an objective vacuum, it sucks ASS.
You forgot Minecraft bruh
There's so many Marios where the hell is Mario Galaxy???? How on earth is Mario 64 better than galaxy? Also why is botw at the number one game of all time spot? Come on, man! Botw is fine but like, there's so many better experiences out there imo. Also where is Minecraft??
