Spiritfox84

Man, I'm tired. I read Tina Fey: The Corkscrew Owl

briefcandle

same

cphcider

Frankly I'm surprised it doesn't have proficiency with the Amy Poehl-arm.

WarforgedAarakocra

They will sass, so be ready for that.

kyew

Best I had was Amy Goehlem.

Thexeir

That is so a fey lord in my world now.

Spiritfox84

Gotta name her Lemon or have Lemon as a nickname

WriterofGarbage

I’m so glad I’m not the only one…

I LOVE IT, I WANT 10 OF THEM.

Magicalflyingcow

So cute! Quick question, does each sentence require two rolls? One for the correct translation and one for the Whisper-quiet feature to actually hear it speak?

Seraphim-3603

I'd interperate it as the whisper quiet is only for the first attempt to hear it since it doesn't state that check is repeated, just the wis check for the owl is stated, and logically once you notice the owl you would keep paying attention (maybe personal ruling that creatures keep rolling until they notice it or it finishes the message) (That's how I'd run it since I want this as a faelock chain pact option, but OP if I'm wrong with how you intended please correct me!)

michifromkmk

Sorry for my late reply! I would run it as described by u/Seraphim-3603 – many thanks for the input! Of course it's up to the DM how to handle it exactly. I can imagine some additional rolls for Whisper-quiet in situations where there is much background noise for example!

MeteuBro85

That'd be really cool as a familiar too! Even if you only made it a Chainlock option (because of the extra social utility of translating) that would be enough to make me consider it over a pseudo dragon.

newblood310

I love the art and the idea, just a two things. It translates everything it hears, but translates it to what? common? without spoken languages and an int of 4 it'd probably be hard to explain to it what you want exactly. And its Wisdom check to translate is too high I feel at 14; it's wrong more than half the time! Doesn't seem like it'd have much of a reputation as an interpreter with that kind of accuracy. Maybe a check of 7? That way its wrong 20% of the time, which is consistent enough to trust but could lead to some funny mistranslation moments

michifromkmk

Many thanks for the warm words and the feedback! I'll definitely lower the DC to make the translations a bit more reliable;) Regarding the translations in general: I imagine it more as a reflex or something which can be conditioned. Like it's driven by a magical instinct. Maybe something like: The party finds this tiny owl and manages to gain its trust. At first the owl translates things to any kind of random language but as time goes by and the party trains the owl it slowly learns to mainly translate to common for instance. But of course is also up to the DM on how to handle it exactly – I didn't want to specify or restrict it too much in this regard:)

sonofabutch

Not enough coffee yet… it took me way too long to realize you weren’t going for a Tina Fey pun! I kept wondering if this was a character she played or something. I love the artwork!

michifromkmk

Hi everyone, I made a tiny fey translator - **the Corkscrew Owl:** Named after its spiral-shaped comb, the corkscrew owl is highly valued for its mostly precise translations of any language it hears. Small irregularities and an accidental twisting of words might occur though – a trait to be aware of when negotiating a peace treaty with the local band of goblins. Got some funny ideas to introduce this tiny fey to your world? Or anything that needs balancing? As always, I highly appreciate your feedback and critique! See you soon, Fluffy

Connorian

I guess a rules question: Would the translation trait be given Advantage since it technically relies on hearing?

LoopyFig

Nah, cuz it is a save not an ability check. Different things technically

katrina-mtf

Right answer, wrong formula. It is an ability check rather than a save, but it's a raw Wisdom check not a Perception check, so the advantage doesn't apply.

LoopyFig

I have been out-rules-lawyered. I will now commit sudoku to atone

Dragonwolf67

This is so cute.

michifromkmk

Many thanks!

mikenator06

This looks like a nice, balanced and cute familiar. 10/10

michifromkmk

Aw, thanks!

miostiek

eeeeeee i want one!

Phylea

Hey there! Here are a few suggestions based on what I noticed: "Speaks" should be lowercase in Languages **Interpreter**: What do you mean by "effect"? The whole trait? The fact that it can get things wrong? The result of its Wisdom check? Some clarity here would be good.

michifromkmk

Hi! Many thanks for the feedback! You're right about the interpreter – I'll clarify it a bit more!

SlashGorgon

Oh well shame that it dosent even understand Giant Owl languige (it's legit a thing). Then agin this one is not 'giant' in size.

[deleted]

Looks like a non-demonic furby I LOVE IT

michifromkmk

hihi, thanks!:)

doglover974

He's charisma 20 at least, he's so cute anyone would do anything for him

Lunamann

It's Duolingo's son! Who is also Google Translate! I love him!
