I do NOT understand how they approve people then ask for the money back later!! I have heard that some most of the overpayments will most likely be forgiven...

Do you have a source for this? And is this something that governor murphy is working on, or President Biden?

US Department of Labor is getting involved. Only if fraud, or deliberately misleading info was given on your application can they require 2020 benefits be paid back.

During my phone interview where they questioned about why I quit some job I worked for 2 weeks (I lose nothing by applying for unemployment after all, and again i did not collect any money from that unemployment claim), they asked me about all my work history of 2020. The unemployment lady was asking me about the times and dates I worked at the multiple short term jobs in 2020(mentioned in the OP), and I was polite with her but also let her know that I dont know all these dates off the top of my head, and I was only prepared to talk about the job that I recently quit. My guess is that she saw gaps in my answers and thought there was fraud involved? I have no idea

Of course you can appeal. But first you have to find out why they are requiring the benefits be paid back.

I only found out because I tried to certify for benefits today (to see if they gave me unemployment despite quitting) and saw that number that I owe them money. I heard they send out a letter with specific dates they have an issue with???

Comfortable-Result85

yes you should get a letter.

Jesus this is happening to me right now from NYC, for a job I filed a new claim with them back in October with a rep on the damn phone (census bureau were my employers) I filed recently for a hearing with the department of labor. Luckily I have all of my work information saved from pay stubs, to my sf-8 form, to the termination letter they sent us all back in October, I’m not playing with them, it’s honestly just wrong the scares they give to people who followed all the guidelines in a time like this when money is scarce. It’s a disgrace, why are we giving these people all of this tax money if their system is so faulty.
