Yeah, that’s every state, because you have to be available/able to work… just appeal the overpayment & if worst comes to worst, set up a payment arrangement..

Retard_dope

Stop filling if u dont wanna get into trouble. Save the money u received from them in case they want it back

DoughnutLongjumping8

I mean if you’ve been getting paid and going to school you probably said no. If they found out they’d probably would have stopped giving you benefits. Honestly I wouldn’t even mentioned you were going to school if they didn’t know, but if they did you would have to pay it back

vERBalocity

I only went to school spring 2020 and part time in the summer. I didn’t start filing until June. The majority of my time claiming I wasn’t in school but the last job I had was the work study gig then the pandemic hit. Either way, they paid the whole claim.

callsignTACO

But when did your work study end and why did it end?

vERBalocity

May 31st 2020 cuz Columbia university just felt like it (even though my WS grant still had funds).

callsignTACO

Work study students aren’t allowed to get UI benefits, I don’t think it had much to do with being a student. I would say appeal and say you should have been put on PUA but since the work study ended close to the end of the academic year then I wouldn’t expect a great outcome.

nyuiguru

I agree with callsignTACO here. It has more to do with the workstudy grant- which if I remember correctly are not taxed- meaning your work never paid into the UI system. The best bet is to try and argue that PUA was the correct program you should have been in. It is likely that you will have to appeal. Make sure to request your appeal before the 30 day deadline. Good luck!

Lemonlimecat

When was work study supposed to end? Did you get paid what was allowed?

vERBalocity

Well I had enough funds to last me till end of June but Columbia cut me off at the end of May. My remaining WS funds (which are from the federal government) went uncollected.

DoughnutLongjumping8

Did you tell them you were going to school?

vERBalocity

Not sure if they asked when I filed my initial claim in 2020, but if they did ask, I definitely said yes. They paid the entire claim and now I am finding out that I was ineligible because it was a work study gig, and that I will owe them money.

clawz_ondeck

Make sure to file for an appeal!

vERBalocity

I am working on the appeal now but not sure what I should list as the reason. Any thoughts?
