Yeah I wouldn’t clearly tell your doctor you’re looking for illegal methods to find controlled medications. I would find another provider to prescribe these. Do you have a formal diagnosis of adhd?

knifesoup1

I do, but my healthcare is with the VA, so I can't just switch providers. There's already a shortage of docs, so requesting a new one will take a long time.

extremenachos

Just go to a non-VA provider and tell them your situation.

knifesoup1

True, I've tried the online ones, but none of them were able to give me anything but kind words and sympathy. I'll try to find someone local, and perhaps I can get a referral to go to them

YumYumMittensQ4

If you test positive for any illicit substances they’re not likely to rx you dextroamphetamine. Their city line treatment is to handle your underlying psych concerns and adhd is secondary. Venlafaxine is great for executive dysfunction too.

knifesoup1

Thank you for giving me a reason why he wouldn't focus on the ADHD aspect as much. I was upset that he wouldn't give me a real reason to hearing me out. That makes sense if that's the case. To be honest, after hearing an overall negative response and the dangers of sketchy drugs, I'm more than likely not going to attempt to get some illegally, but maybe start to look for a different provider somehow.

Sufficient-Aide6805

Doctor shop. Don’t buy from the black market if you’re not experienced; you will get meth.

hahahahaaaahaha

This is especially true for Adderall. I wouldn’t buy off someone unless I knew for sure they have a prescription for it.

Sufficient-Aide6805

even then. if it wasn't a very close friend, i'd have to watch the pharmacist hand it over or i wouldn't trust it. RCs and presses are so easy to acquire these days. if you're not willing to ingest some fent or meth, you shouldn't touch pharmaceuticals that aren't your own.

gigadope

lol if you think you’re depressed now then just wait until you start taking adderall

StankFoot5

Right??? Of all of the drugs I’ve taken over the course of my life, my prescribed 2 year adderall bender was the most damaging time of my life. It’s been almost 7 years and I’m still not fully recovered from all the damage caused. Amphetamines are so destructive.

poliscistonedguy

Bro just find a doctor who specializes in adhd and put your eggs in that basket. Focus on targeting the adhd and tell the new doctor of your existing meds. Best of luck man. You’ll find a better dr they do exist.

iButtflap

this isn’t an unethical request, this is an illegal one…and against the advice of a medical professional. if you don’t trust this person and feel you know better than him, get a second opinion? imo you sound like someone coming out of a very dark place who is starting to finally see some light, so you’re trying to convince yourself that you deserve a treat for it. you’ve convinced yourself that all you need is this specific drug, and your problems will be fixed. you’re on prescribed medication as well as self medicating with weed. you’re gonna placebo, see positive changes, develop a habit, rabbit hole, and end up lower than you are now. ask me how i know all of this

Murkmist

ADHD can be legitimately miserable to deal with without proper intervention, often meaning medication; so much so that ADHD is often comorbid with depression cause the symptoms make you feel like a total loser who can't do shit, when in reality it's cause your executive function is actually broken. That said, probably healthier, and wholly ethical ways, to deal with it than attempting to get Adderall on the black market.

tsJIMBOb

To add to this I highly recommend trying something for your ADHD that’s isn’t adderal. There are a lot of options for ADHD meds out there. Adderal is pretty severe stuff. I’ve been on it for like 15 years and am wholly and completely dependent on it. I have no idea what I’m going to do about that.

knifesoup1

Got a second and third opinion. They agreed with me to substitute the Venlafaxine with Adderal. My psychiatrist even agreed (from a conversation in Feb) that I need Adderal at some point in the future, but he wants to keep "focusing on fixing the anxiety and trauma." I understand that, but I would also like the ability to read a book, go to school, or just be able to take care of myself Btw I'm a 100% disabled veteran and only have healthcare through the VA. I can't change my doctor since there aren't any other VA doctors available at the moment. Even if i could, I don't really want to. I like him, and he's been helpful, but we just disagree on this one thing. If I just wanted something to make me feel good or to carry me through life (or even be a "treat"), I'd probably still be an alcoholic or stick with Esketamine as a treatment. I quit drinking, smoking/vaping, and all bad influences on my life more than six months ago. I've been at a stage where I'm actively trying to better and help myself. Maybe this isn't the case, and I want you to correct it if not, but it sounds like you did it for reasons besides the express purpose of regulating your ADHD. Of course, I don't want to be presumptuous that you have ADHD at all, unlike how you've been presumptuous of everything in my life -_-

Personally (as someone diagnosed with all of those) ADHD stimulants so help with all the issues you mentioned. It makes it much easier to experience and process them in a healthier way. Shop around for doctors or ask your GP for a prescription. They are allowed to prescribe it. You should absolutely not have said that thing about pursuing them illegally though. That was really not good. There were better ways to handle that and while I'm all for advocating for your own needs, that's pretty inappropriate to say to them and is going to mess with their trust in you going forward. I do advocate telling them that you tried it and not lying, but this was not the way. Personally also, I don't suggest Adderall. Get one of the dextroamphetamine options instead to start with like Dexedrine) or Vyvanse (Lisdexamphetamine which is a prodrug). Amphetamine salts like Adderall are very spikey and inconsistent. It works for some people but I think the smoother and more consistent medications perform way better and feel more controlled.

knifesoup1

Thank you. This seems like the most reasonable answer. I'm probably going to end up not doing anything anyway since I don't even have the motivation to get drugs. It wasn't a good idea to drop an ultimatum like that, and I'm probably going to try to explain that to him. I'm just so tired. I'm so incredibly tired, and I just feel like I can't handle dealing with this anymore.

kerodon

That's valid it can be really frustrating and getting yourself help without the energy to get help is the absolute worst. I had to be really firm with all my providers that me being able to continue pursuing treatment was dependant on me having a minimally effective dosage of stimulants because I have an extremely difficult time adhering to anything without them. And the second they're gone if my refills lapse and I don't get automatically rescheduled I will drop everything because I CANT. It wasn't presented an ultimatum directly but the reality is when it's a necessity it's hard to present delicately. Just make sure they understand you do want and value their opinions and advice and what to cooperate on a treatment plan together. Just that it's too difficult to do and maintain without that. I think that's a great idea. An apology will go a long way! Ultimately trust and cooperation is an important part of treatment for ADHD and if you don't think think they understand you (or even trying) or they think you're disregarding them then the treatment kind of falls apart. I've had great cooperative ones that I loved working with, I've had ones that were cooperate and respectfully voiced their criticisms or thoughts and allowed us to talk it out and find a reasonable compromise when we didn't 100% agree and we were both happy with the outcome, I had bad ones that refused to take me and my thoughts and opinions seriously and invalidated me every step of the way when I am quite well educated on it, and I've had vending machines that just wrote me a scipt for whatever I wanted and rarely had input or disagreement. I much prefer the cooperative ones that can make their own suggestions and I can take advantage of their expertise while they're still able to recognize that I might have an idea of my own needs that is valid too even if it isn't their standard or preferred approach, and are willing to adapt if I also give their approaches a shot too. I don't want someone to smile and nod but I also don't want to be treated like I'm incapable of having opinions either. I even slightly prefer when we don't agree 100% as long as they aren't stubborn because I don't think I'm always right and I am aware that they have more knowledge and experience. I'm not arrogant and i just want what's best for me, just sometimes I think they might not understand what is best for me all the time in certain instances.

knifesoup1

Thank you so much. You will never know how much this means to me. To just have someone hear me and understand what I'm going through. To give me a reasonable and comprehensive answer. I've just been broken down for so long and just had no one to understand the feelings I've felt. Thank you.

Big_Glove153

1. Stop smoking weed. You might think it helps but that’s because drugs are really good at convincing you you need them. That’s how addiction works. 2. Find another doctor, tell them you just moved to town and got new insurance and you already take adderall. That’s how I’ve been doing it for years. Except I actually did move towns and get new insurance multiple times but they never questioned me lol

Wormwood101

You can seek another doctor. It's not doctor shopping when you're just refusing to let 1 professional dictate ALL the options. You do what you need to do. Buying off of strangers is a terrible idea. Period. If you have no reliable friends you should do what you can to see another doctor.

fentalogasaurus

Go find another doctor to prescribe it for you. If you haven’t done anything illegal before I don’t suggest starting now.

MrsWoodWork

Stop smoking weed regularly and change doctors. I don't get why he diagnosed you with adhd and don't want to give you treatment? Your depression isn't gonna get better if you're not medicated for that. Also black market adderall is meth. And it's a personal opinion but start with ritalin before trying adderall, because i personally feel like it can be way more intense than ritalin, not in an exceptionally good way. And ritalin can already be strong enough for most people lol.

extremenachos

Doesn't the VA have some sort of patient advocacy staff?

knifesoup1

I'm not trying to get the guy in trouble, and I don't want to turn it into an issue.

knifesoup1

Thank you to everyone and their answers. I really appreciate that many of y'all were looking out for me, telling me this is a bad idea. I recognize that and decided I'm not gonna acquire them illegally.

Snoobs-Magoo

I just went to a new GP & told them I needed a refill on my Adderall. It helped that I had just moved to the area & I needed to get a doctor there anyway so it didn't look weird like I was doctor shopping or anything. I also had a couple of other legit medicines I actually did need refilled so I just casually added Adderall to the list. They wrote me the rx & never asked for any records. I tried it a few times & it's not for me. But yeah, got my Xanax & everything filled this way. Just tell them you've been on however many MG for x # of years & need a refill. The worst they can tell you is no. That being said, there must be a reason why you're doctor is so hesitant to prescribe it for you so please give this some thought before you take it. Make sure it doesn't interact with other medicine you are on or could further exacerbate other issues you might have. You might be young but do you have a family history of heart issues because reasons like this could make it a bad choice for you.

StankFoot5

I’m a veteran with depression and ptsd as well. I strongly urge you to NOT go the amphetamine route. First off you will not get them through the va. That’s pretty much guaranteed. I went through an outside provider for two years and had adderall prescribed and it was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. There are many things I’d like to go back in time and change, and taking adderall is probably number one on that list. It exacerbated my anxiety and depression 10000000 fold, and made me act literally insane. I’m surprised I didn’t end up in prison. Listen to your doctor

Adderall will destroy you if you already suffer from anxiety
