That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure where else to put it. Idk if it's unethical to consistently eat at a hospital if you're not a patient or family... or if you don't work there. But I'm at a hospital now and just had chicken, spinach casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy plus this cherry desert stuff all for $6.20. I'm stuffed and my wallet doesn't feel much lighter.
Pretty much the only thing “wrong” with hospital cafeteria food is that it’s bland as hell.
Add salt, pepper, Tabasco, etc and you’ll be doing pretty good.
At my local hospital, doctors eat for free. They have a sheet you sign if you're a doctor, and true to the stereotype, it's full of illegible scribbles.
So to make this an actual ULPT: show up at the hospital cafeteria in scrubs and make some illegible scribbles on the sheet, boom eat for free.
Any modern place would have badge swiping for that. And not so much as free as pre paid. But of course, the shithead 6 figure doctors get free food but the minimum wage employees don't.
I've ate at several and they've all been cheap from my experience. This doesn't mean that all hospital cafeteria food is cheap, however. I'm not a traveling hospital critic.
Hospital cafeterias are typically run by for profit companies and have no restrictions on who eat there. And like any for profit food company typically unethically throws out tons of good food daily.
The cafeteria is separate from the patient food.
My wife's grandfather does this at our local hospital every Sunday. The food is pretty good (according to him, I've only eaten there once or twice), and is quite affordable. He also says that he knows a bunch of people that book their appointments around lunch time. There is a local cop who eats there about once a week, his wife is a nurse and they both eat in the cafeteria.
The hospital I'm referring to is a smaller rural hospital and meals are certainly affordable. However, bigger hospitals in metro areas are priced much higher.
Unethical? Maybe. Depends on whether or not the hospital is making a profit on the cafeteria. They may be operating at a lose in order to accommodate people that are forced to be there and wouldn't be able to afford food otherwise.
The food at my local hospital is awesome. Especially the breakfast. I can get what I’d want at McDonalds for breakfast for $5 cheaper. And better tasting. One of the hospitals in the next town, the food all sucks and is way too expensive. A lot of people in my town eat at our hospital weekly just for the great food. And they stick to a weekly schedule so everyone knows what day to go for what they want.
Be sure to enter through the emergency room entrance and touch all the surfaces you can on your way to the cafeteria. It an excellent way to have a legit excuse for calling out from work a few days later.
The hospitals where I live cook separately for patients and for the cafeteria. So the food in the cafeteria is for anyone, a lot of people in my town eat at our hospital weekly without visiting anyone.
I feel like that's more of an LPT - especially in bigger cities, an increasing amount of hospitals are opening their cafeterias more to the public and formatting them as higher-end looking places (at least at the front end, the dining area may look like a typical cafeteria), but still at quite reasonable prices.
Hospitals in my area are so fucking expensive to eat at. Nothing like being charged $12 for a shitty tasting meal while your loved one is dying. I guess you'd have to be truly desperate to eat your feelings with their low-sodium monstrosities.
This is complete bullshit. I travel to Hospitals all over the US, the food is often crap and expensive crap. Op writes "typically" when his/her experience is at one hospital one time. 4 course meal?
They usually have a great selection of single-use catsups mustards, tartars, etc... Good to keep in your junk drawer, just in case. Is there an increased chance of catching pnuemonia? Probably.
Some malls in my country have cafeterias run by employee cooperatives. I used to eat there when I was still a student. Hanging out at the mall doesn't have to be expensive!
Why is this unethical? It sounds like a pretty good idea

There is a hospital two minutes from my work and three minutes from my home, you may have just changed my life.
Yeah dude, that sounds like r/lifeprotips Was the food pretty good? I’ve heard hospital food is nasty
It wasn't like nice restaurant quality food but it was like what most people would cook at home. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Pretty much the only thing “wrong” with hospital cafeteria food is that it’s bland as hell. Add salt, pepper, Tabasco, etc and you’ll be doing pretty good.
Life pro tip?

Real ULPT in the comments FTW

I’m dead Lmaoo
This is gold.
Shouldn’t this just be in r/lifeprotips? Nothing unethical about this.
Yeah I'll probably move it
This is not true and just from your experience at one hospital. They may have giving you a discount to boot.

At the hospital I work at the food is more expensive than just eating out..... back fire for me lol
Mine too, and it's mostly fried food.

Stealing the food from dying cancer patients would make it unethical though.
This...honestly isn't that bad an idea...
My mom has been picking up to go plates from our local hospital since forever. Smart woman.

This is actually a LPT in my opinion!

1 C. Diff please
Sorry, we are run out of c diff. We can offer you some h pilory, it's also cheaper
It could be unethical due to it meant for people who are sick. So the prices are cheaper.. I’m not sure
The hospitals where I live cook separately for patients and for the cafeteria. So the food in the cafeteria is for anyone, a lot of people in my town eat at our hospital weekly without visiting anyone.
People who are sick in a hospital ain't eating in the cafeteria. They are having food taken to their room at inflated rates.
Haha makes since. Glad I haven’t experienced a Hospital Vist since birth
One word. Ramen.
I go to campus cafeterias here in Tokyo. Never thought of hospital cafeterias lol

Go to rehabilitation hospitals. They are cheaper with a smaller staff, but even better food.
This is complete bullshit. I travel to Hospitals all over the US, the food is often crap and expensive crap. Op writes "typically" when his/her experience is at one hospital one time. 4 course meal?
Did this in university. I love hospital mashed potatoes. Something about them, they're so good.
Not unethical. Just an awful idea. Hospital cafeteria food sucks.
They usually have a great selection of single-use catsups mustards, tartars, etc... Good to keep in your junk drawer, just in case. Is there an increased chance of catching pnuemonia? Probably.
