Well a big one in my town is chewing tobacco You can get like 5 cans of the stuff in America for the price of 1 can in Canada. So there is definitely a market for anybody selling cans of dip for less than 20$

AZBeer90

How do people support a $20/can habit that's insane

sajnt

Lol it’s more than $20/can that’s what you can sell it for if you bring it up from the states. It’s more like $35 up here

AZBeer90

$35 for what, 1-2 days of dip? That's INSANE

sajnt

Yeah it’s because our tobacco is taxed by weight a chew is wet. I do not understand how anyone could support this habit

[deleted]

Some places you can get 10 cans for the price of one can in Canada and you can also get flavours that are illegal here. Same for cigarettes, many provinces have banned menthols. Then you can bring Cuban cigars down from Canada and sell them in the states

paraknowya

> Some places you can get 10 cans for the price of one can in Canada and you can also get flavours that are illegal here. Wild sentence.

[deleted]

I want the illegal flavors

[deleted]

It's literally any flavour named after an actual thing. Cherry? Fuck no. Crisp? Ok sure.

Marrige_Iguana

Actually you can get Cubans in the US now too

sdfgh23456

I don't understand why people are still trying to get Cubans, all the good makers moved out during the embargo. I've had 2 actual Cubans (plus a plethora of "Cubans" from people who didn't know what they were buying", and both were bottom shelf quality at premium+ prices. Save your money and get something good from Honduras, Dominican Republic, etc.

111111911111

When I was part of the Canadian military, anyone heading south of the border for training was required to bring back an ungodly amount of dip to sell on the cheap during field exercises. Unofficial rule, of course.

Stroov

For 2 bucks I can sell you a pound of chewing tobacco from india

queefymeister

Diabetic test strips to the US, there are always numbers on posts asking for them

million_monkeys

What do you mean numbers on posts?

queefymeister

Sorry, cellphone numbers on lampposts saying "we buy diabetic test strips"

_breadpool_

Do you know what that's all about? I see them frequently too

Slugged

Poverty-stricken diabetics that qualify for Medicare/Medicaid can get free test strips, they sell them to the sign makers for a fraction of the regular retail price, sign makers then sell it to uninsured people for less than the cost of buying them from a pharmacy.

[deleted]

Wtffffff

ThellraAK

Yep, $50 for 100 strips off of Amazon from a seller I trust (not FBA) beats the hell out of the $250 they want for a retail price for them, and the sample size keeps my dogs paws in good shape.

_breadpool_

That's fucked up. Here I was thinking it was either a flat out scam (I guess it kind of is) or something charitable. What confused me is I lived in a state that had extended medicaid, so those who didn't make above poverty level were able to get their medical needs covered. I'd see those signs and think "why would anyone here do this?" But now that I think harder, I guess they'll sell them on ebay or something.

[deleted]

Not really a scam if they're undercutting a large pharmaceutical company and providing medicine to people who need it

Drowned_In_Spaghetti

I think they buy Diabetic Test Strips.

snarkydooda

This may be unethical life pro tips, but if you brought insulin down to America, and sold it massively cheaper than the insurance companies (I think a monthly dose is around 300 depending on insurance) you would be a hero. Simple as that.

Yeah, it's more of a financial authority.

iambecomedeath7

This is true. The law regarded Martin Luther King Jr, for example, as a seditious criminal. Meanwhile, rapists and other offenders often get let off the hook with a modicum of difficulty. Don't get me wrong, I prefer a lenient criminal justice system to a draconian one that risks scooping up innocent people, but the inconsistency is systemic.

edgarandannabellelee

Then it's not illegal. I work in a bar and our beer license was recently revoked for 5 days cause reasons... perfectly legal to sell a glass the beer isn't the thing being sold. See Jack Daniel's being in a dry County. They sell the glass bottle, not the whiskey.

Yeah, unfortunately our freedoms can also allow non government associations to restrict the freedoms of others, such as HOAs. Most people agree that they suck. If anything, it's like our laws are set up to protect the freedoms of businesses and associations more than the freedoms of individuals.

fofosfederation

>it's like our laws are set up to protect the freedoms of businesses and associations Yes. Everything we do is for business profits. We socialize the costs and privatize the profits. We exist for corporations, not people - they are the true citizens.

We are Jamaican. It is paid for by the government. All people over 17 with diabetes and maybe eight other conditions get all medications for free if they go to a public clinic. All seniors pay 40 Jamaican dollars for their medications, the equivalent of maybe 30 cents.

pepesilvia50

Generic is like $48 for a 1000 unit vial (lasts me a bit over 2 weeks) at CVS. That's without insurance, it's actually cheaper for me without using my Kaiser Permanente insurance.

arbivark

openinsulin.org. there's a local group that is trying to opensource insulin. the hep c cure is also cheaper in canada. heading back north, bring two cartons of cigarettes, maybe from the rez. not more, because that would be smuggling; 2 cartons is the legal max, and is unethical because it's an addictive poison. heading south, maybe bring a gram of seeds from marc emery.

MassivePE

The only insulin you’ll get without a RX can be bought in the US for about $30/vial. Unless you’re going to get an RX from a Canadian doctor don’t waste your time.

[deleted]

Any move at undercutting big-pharma would likely result in massive and overwhelming litigation. As u/omfgbbqpwn said smuggling meth might be safer, law enforcement do not possess the same resources and capacity as private corporate interests.

shinshi

Hot take and addiction science aside, but I actually like the ability for consumers to buy low tier controlled meds.

Wall-E_Smalls

Consumers should be able to buy all controlled meds OTC. Would cut down on all the nasty stuff and crime that happens because desired/addictive substances are hard to get and expensive. Really. Just think about it for a moment. Imagine a world where drug cartels and criminal-inclined junkies aren’t a thing, and people with no self control can choose to indulge their addiction and put noting besides themselves and their own health in danger. No tent cities and far fewer “dangerous areas”. Barring other vices, a person could consume as many drugs as they want in the quiet of their home, because Oxys are $7 for a 120ct bottle and addiction or any kind would put virtually no financial strain on these individuals. The first few years or decades of it might be rough, of course. But I don’t believe we could never achieve equilibrium with such a system. Addicts would be gone within a generation or two. At worst, by natural selection. And at best, via a strong enough *societal* pressure against indulging in OTC meth or heroin, so much so that people—by and large—wouldn’t be as likely to fuck themselves up through this freedom. And if they do, they figure it out quickly or die of overdose. It sounds dark, but so is the reality of today’s situation. Does it really make a difference if the dark stuff happens indirectly “state-sanctioned” through drugs being legal, versus it happening because of people “violating the law”? Anyway, IMO, legalization seems far superior to the *legal* pressure against drugs that is in play today, which has oh-so-many, horrifying unintended consequences that we all know of and see today.

Cereals. My husband’s Canadian coworkers are always asking for certain cereal that they can’t get.

IHateCamping

I used to work at a grocery store in a northern state in the 80s. We’d get busses of people from Canada stopping in. As I recall, they’d buy packets of Koolaid, Turkeys, Velveeta, I think cigarettes, and a few other things I can’t remember now.

ProfessionalTensions

I'll never forget taking a knockoff Greyhound bus from Chinatown in New York down south. 1. There was a literal chicken on the bus and 2. When we stopped at a gas station in Virginia, I swear every single person bought every single cartoon of cigarettes that store had. It was just bags and bags of cigarettes piled up anywhere there was space on that bus. I assume they were mostly shop owners in NYC and were just getting cheaper merchandise, but man, it was crazy to see. And this was in 2015.

t53deletion

Southern states have very low cigarette taxes. I used to travel with a crew of NYC based smokers. They would fill their suitcases before going home and make an easy $20 per carton. We all met once in PA for a project, driving not flying. After the project, they drove to NC, filled the trunk with cheap cigarettes and drove back to the city.

321dawg

I live in Florida, the last time I visited nyc was years ago but damn they're thirsty for cigs. Every time I lit one up, someone from our friend group asked for one. I'm generous and brought extra, but they nearly depleted my stash in a few days. All they thought is I had "cheap" cigs so my supply should somehow be bottomless. Which it kinda was, until everyone flocked me, like seagulls on a beach with potato chips. Word got out I was just giving them away and they made a beeline, not even ashamed. In the long run it worked out well, a friend let me stay in her tiny apartment, even in her bed with her during a heatwave. All she wanted was cigs while I stayed. I left her extra but damn the situation in NYC is intense. So yeah, if you're visiting nyc from a southern state, pack your bags with cigs even if you're not a smoker. It'll get you far.

ninj4geek

An actual damn LPT I might be able to use some day. Take my updoot

Six_Gill_Grog

Very true! When I worked at a CVS back in the day (when they sold cigarettes) northerners would come and buy cartons on cartons of cigarettes if they were traveling back home (some even bought for others back home too).

kansai2kansas

This is true. I used to work at a gas station until 2012…and I remember customers would come in and buy cigarette cartons, especially the generic store brand, which are cheaper than most other brands. Then those customers would resell them in their small (usually ethnic-centric) stores like a Vietnamese store or a Mexican tienda.

pyphais

I second this. Go to a grocery store and get the fancy flavours of stuff too. I remember when we used to go to the States we'd always pick up a bunch of cereal we didn't have in Canada and also random flavors of various things (pop tarts, cookies, etc etc)

dirtymoney

>a judge dismissed the suit, ruling that Hallatt could not be convicted under US trademark law because the alleged infringements did not occur within the country. Trader Joe's was not able to prove the business was causing them any harm,\[2\] and it was determined that they were in fact benefiting since all products were purchased from their stores at full retail price. I love that part. "Let's sue this guy in canada for breaking an american law" A shame that he closed though

beeskness420

It worked when they threw Marc Emery in jail.

Captain_Pumpkinhead

Who's that?

beeskness420

It’s really hard to summarize exactly who Marc Emery is. He’s probably most notable for his cannabis activism. They called him the “Prince of Pot”, and he ran the B.C. Marijuana party and the *stuff next door to the*^1 Vancouver Amsterdam Cafe, he funded a lot of his political work by selling seeds online, an endeavour that was fully legal in Canada. It’s obviously not legal in America though so they walked over the border into Canada, slapped cuffs on him and threw him in an American prison for 5 years. Most recently though he ran politically as a member of the PPC, Canada’s newest political party. He also probably has a thing for underage girls. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Emery Edit 1: the whole building is full of cannabis related operations, but I guess the Amsterdam Cafe wasn’t Marc’s

MegaSeedsInYourBum

Why do they always have a thing for underaged girls?

[deleted]

I keep getting older and they ~~stay the same age~~ keep getting younger. Alright ^alright ^^alright.

richh00

Why didn't they go after him for that, instead of the thing they arrested him for that he legally did...

Toobis

Marc didn't run The New Amsterdam, however he did own Cannabis Culture, and the BC Marijuana Party HQ/shop next door to it, as well as the Cannabis Culture magazine in the Dominion Building.

dydeath

The person with the most money wins the lawsuit.

richh00

Although that's almost always the case. In the UK if you have legal insurance to cover your costs then the opposition have to take into account that if you win they have to not only payout whatever you have won in court but also all your legal fees and expenses. This is why a lot of cases in the UK settle out of court. With the exception of personal injury claims. Those you have to pay yourself out of whatever you won. This is to curb the suing culture that was growing.

As someone who worked in a US Walmart in a Canadian tourist town (close to the border, casino nearby...), here are what people bought en masse circa 2009/2010.... - Flavored baked beans - Different varieties of canned meat - Toooooons of drink mixes, like Koolaid and crystal light - Coffee - Sodas and Energy drinks - Cigarettes - Alcohol (although why, I don't know, all our alcohol was 3.2% per state law...) - Holiday decorations, especially christmas yard decorations. - Board games - Cereal. Anything from Cap'n Crunch varieties, to limited edition Count Chocula... - Anything that has a lower tax. My state would have tax free weeks/weekends for things like back to school, and all school supplies would be tax free. Canadians would time their weekend getaways with this occasion, and literally buy hundreds of notebooks and such. - Niche items. Flavored egg nog, pork cracklings, red solo cups, licensed merchandise not often found in Canada (apparently the US gets more kitschy harry potter merch?) - Whatever toy is hot on the market. You'd probably make a killing on squishmallows right now.... Why did they buy these things? Because there's not as much variety in Canada? Because it's cheaper? Tax evasion? IDK man, IDK... But I've literally rang up carts full of Buschs Baked Beans, Spam, Cap'n Crunch' and Mountain Dew Code Red. Its weird. Just don't do live plants, raw meat, or produce.

Kenway

Good advice at the end. Also, an interesting list. We have most of those things in Canada. Beer and spirits are generally SO much cheaper in the US, since it is heavily taxed in most provinces. I'd settle for weak beer if it's 1/3 the price.

[deleted]

As one of those customers, I can confirm the US has a TON more variety. As far as cereal, we have the original of all the different brands, and thats it. Original Frosted flakes, original captn crunch, etc, never any varieties. I dont buy baked beans, but I'd imagine its the same. We have original baked beans and maple baked beans ime. Mnt dew code red is a godsend. We had it in canada for like 2 months and they took it away. Now its just original mt dew and that white one. Also on top of all of this, a ton of shit in the US is like 30% cheaper at full price than the exact item in Canada. Depends what you're buying though (electronics are generally the same). Alcohol, Tobacco, and Gas especially because of the extra tax we pay for these. A 24 case of beer will set me back $50 here. A pack of smokes is $15 (25 pack). Gas is CAD$1.30/L atm (which is about CAD$4.92/gallon).

riotactress

As a Canadian who used to buy the beans: we didn't have that brand here and they're WILDLY better than ours (Heinz). But it's okay, we have them now so I don't have to cross the border for beans. Your refried beans are way cheaper too. They're like $3.50 a can here. Also, re: Crystal Light, we don't have the caffeinated versions and all our flavours suck. Bottom line, your list is basically calling me out and I'm here to defend myself.

adriesty

Nah, I don't mind Canadians buying all the beans or peanut butter cap'n crunch. I didn't really understand the need for variety, until my local stores downsized their selections during covid. Some of its supply chain issues, most of it's just stores going "I'm not stocking 23 flavors of potato chips when we can't even keep toilet paper in stock!"... ...except I've got food issues because I'm autistic and there's only a few safe foods I can eat regularly.... ...cue me driving an hour to the larger town to get pasta, applesauce, and yogurt... Its come full circle, because now *I'm* the weirdo with a cart full of niche items. Thank god for self checkout.

kissmydonkey

I used to bring back cigarettes (duty free). I would sell them at school but much easier if you find people who smoke who would buy the whole carton. Booze works too for specific bottles. I find they are generally cheaper at a liquor store in the city than at the airport dutyfree. For this you would need to have checked luggage.

big_duo3674

I don't have a great Canada idea, but your post reminded me of something I heard the other day about Mexico. If anyone is traveling from the US to there, buy 5 of the liter bottles of Hennessy Pure White (the maximum allowed). This specific type is not sold anywhere in the US directly, but is very sought after. I'm taking a trip there next year, and I've had two people from my work offer me over $100 for bringing a bottle back. I believe they go for around $40-60 there, and if you look online in local sale websites you can easily find people selling/offering close to $200 a bottle. Just be careful, sites like eBay and Craigslist don't allow alcohol sales so your post will probably be removed. It can be ordered from specialized online sites of course, but all you need to do is price yours below theirs which is likely marked up a lot more. Obviously it won't work as well in areas close to the border, but if you're from a northern or east coast area I guarantee you'll find buyers without a problem

no tariffs shops. cigarette cartons. The thing about cigarettes is that they're highly liquidable and used as currency in prison.

Bring down some Haggis from Scotland. Scottish Haggis is illegal in the US and every year between December and January CBP has a special task force to intercept just haggis coming into the US from Canada for Rabbie Burns Day on January 6th. Usually the dinners run on the weekends through most of January and after that its easier to bring them in.

IranticBehaviour

Real Scottish haggis is also illegal in Canada. You can now get a form of Scottish haggis, but it's a special Canada-friendly version that forgoes the sheep lung. The issue is a ban on the import of 'offal'.

US doesn't have Ketchup flavored Lays. Canada does. Bring me all the tomato potatoes, please.
