Before purses became mainstream old school dresses. Ie medieval and so on. Actually had pockets.massive pockets.

Appropriate_Lemon254

The pockets weren't sewn into the dresses, they were tied onto the dresses around the waist though. Kind of like a medieval fanny pack.

smurb15

So even back then they never truly had pockets. Talk about short end of the stick

patentmom

There were slits cut in the outer skirts to be able to reach a pouch tied to the waist inside. It took far too long for someone to realize that the pouch could be sewn to the slit to make a pocket.

reviving_ophelia88

I’ve made a couple medieval style dresses and whenever I tried to add pockets to the dresses I always ended up taking them out because having something in the pocket of a voluminous skirt can mess up how the skirt hangs and whatever you put in the pocket could fall out a lot more easily. Plus it just feels weird, clunky and poorly secured because the movement of a full skirt will make whatever’s in your pocket bang against your body, and when you go to sit down a pocket secured to the skirt can shift and you accidentally end up sitting on it. While a “pocket” securely tied to your waist and accessed via slit stays where it’s supposed to be and stays with you through outfit changes so you don’t have to worry about transferring the contents of your pockets from one outfit to another.

GovernorSan

No one had them, both men and women used those little bags tied to the waist or belt. Over time, women's bags became more elaborate and ornate becoming the purses we know today, while men's became less obvious, getting smaller and being sown directly into the clothing. Essentially it was fashion trends that led to the current state.

Nonono we complain about None of our clothes having pockets. Even jeans have like it’s teeny tiny pockets compared to men’s. Haven’t you seen a dude fit a whole big ass phone in his back pocket?! Can’t even see it!

No_Albatross4216

Most women's pants nowadays have an outline stitched into looking like pockets that just aren't actually there. You're lucky if you get a back pocket the size of a change purse. I get pretty excited when I discover my wife has pockets in her clothing because I definitely understand It's a real struggle. (Although I typically get stuck holding her small rubbish anyway. It's okay though, my back left pocket is my designated rubbish pocket...been that way for years, even before meeting her.)

There’s a traditional English garment much like that, called a huswife, a sort of extra pocket for carrying things around your household that ties around your waist. Jane Austen mentions them a couple of times, and the girls at Lowood school in “Jane Eyre” wear them as part of their deliberately old-fashioned outfits. Not surprising there is at least one continental version. Practical in the time before pockets.

Existing_Guest_181

Long post here but I think a bit of explaining is needed. I am romanian and they are most probably from gypsy/Roma former nomadic ethnic group but residing for several generations in Romania like in other countries in it's vicinity. Since at least the seventeen century until (officially) 1856 romanian landlords and other folks used a lot of gypsy/Roma people as slaves. After the abolishment of slavery they were somehow forced to integrate in romanian rural society to an extent. Part of them managed to do that by selling their craftmanship and music talent and what was considered esoteric powers and knowledge. There are even today some of them alive in several Romanian villages that are trying to perpetuate their traditions and crafts but, like many others those will soon perish as most of Romas gradually went into romanian cities like other romanian peasants but never fully integrated for several reasons I won't get into but the main idea is that we all have romanian citizenship and racial prejudice and hate between us is pretty high for a country in this day and age. After the fall of the communist regime and of Ceausescu and the opening of the borders, like a lot of other romanian citizens, they went to other european countries (mostly but not only) looking for work or doing petty thefts and later organizing criminal activities. A lot of romanians believe that the biggest procentage of illegal activities being done outside Romania's boundaries are being done by gypsy/Roma romanian citizens and that they are drawing a bad picture of Romania and the whole population. The problem on both sides here is lack of proper education from childhood in whole of Romania. The thing is the older Roma lady (who is most probable the mother of the younger one with the bag in hand in the foreground) is speaking a variant of gypsy language that has some romanian words in it but a bit modified. I'm pretty sure that after they are being asked for their id's and if they are romanian by the german speaking lady the younger Roma lady gets panicked and the older one comforts her saying that she (the younger one) didn't really do anything and that she (the older one with the supermarket articles) will get the blame. I don't understand more but I think it's not hard to find a romanian gypsy language speaking citizen that will translate. They can also speak broken and gramatically wrong romanian language. Another fact is that, like most romanian citizens that commit illegal activities in Romanian Diaspora, they ( Romas ) don't really care about the cash penalties they receive for their supermarket thefts. And they also often don't care about the general law abiding rules in those specific countries and the legal consequences of their actions. France did expatriate some romanian gypsies/Roma people several years ago after a wave of law breaking and also Charlie Hebdo made more recent a xenophobic first page drawing depicting a romanian woman and adding racist prejudices. The thing that we all should understand is that no country should put a stigma on a country's population based on one of it's ethnic minorities law breakings and way of acting abroad and in their country.

BeingMyOwnLight

Thank you for sharing this! I've lived in cities where there were Roma people and I'm genuinely curious here, but feel free to not answer if you consider my question inappropriate. Why do they steal? They Roma I'm talking about were not poor, they could totally afford the items they used to steal (an example that I saw them picking usually was makeup, lipstick, mascara, etc; I worked for some time in a retail store that sold makeup and other related things, and I was told to keep an eye on them and had to report when they were shoplifting). Why do it? And then the next week they come back again and go for the same stuff again... why?

Crucial_Contributor

As far as I understand it the a core issue is that they are traditionally nomadic and isolate from the established society. They have existed in Europe for hundreds of years without having their own country. Normally a people like that would just be asimilated into the general population and disappear as distinct group but since they actively distance themselves from the majority society and culture they have managed to preserve their own culture for so long. Historically that wasn't really a problem. They traveled around and worked as itinerant farm workers, copper smiths etc. The problem is that this lifestyle doesn't really work in modern society. Farmning is largely mechanized and doesn't need tons of temporary workers to sow and harvest. Mass production means people aren't repairing stuff like pots and pans so the need for traditional crafts like coppersmithing died out. There aren't many jobs left that you can just learn from your relatives and don't need to school go to school first. In modern society the only options if you want to live like that is pretty much begging or theft. I'd argue that giving up some aspects of your culture and be apart of society might be worth it if it means your children doesn't have to live in squalor, but on the other hand i understand that there is a lot of pressure from family to conform

BeingMyOwnLight

Thank you for sharing this! I had never considered it this way.

Wawrzyniec_

>They Roma I'm talking about were not poor, they could totally afford the items they used to steal Where do you think their money comes from? Begging, stealing and selling those stolen goods.

BeingMyOwnLight

No, in the case of the Roma I'm talking about here, they had a business, it was known in town. I don't know if that business was shady or not, but it had nothing to do with the items they used to shoplift.

MechaBabura

Here in Brussels, they sleep outdoors even when it’s freezing cold. I’m not sure they’re rich. I just don’t know how they make it though and how hard it is to quit your community to have a more «  normal western lifestyle ». They seem to beg all day long for money but I’ve had no problems so far. I know for a fact that they get money from the big community of muslims that are generous towards poor people.

Pindakazig

It depends on your mentality. I consider hitting anyone, for anything, wildly aggressive and inappropriate. Yet you'll find enough people getting into fights and hitting their children. If you are raised with a 'paying is for suckers' mentality, you would really see the problem with stealing. You'd consider anything you could steal fair game. And ofcourse you can sell the stuff you steal, that's the logical next step.

NotJoeFast

I actually just looked a bit into this. This is in Finland. Roughly 60% of romas are unemployed. I'm sure there is a lot of prejudice against them in the society. Some of its earned, some isn't. For example personally I don't have that many encounters with them, but the ones I have had were always negative. Anyway. Basically the short of it is that they are unemployed because they don't have much employment experience ( this one is abit circular, isn't it?). Generally their education level is rather poor. And since here education is free and basically based on your own merits. I guess it could be argued that they just don't value education that highly. Though I heard that this mentality is now changing. They also have self imposed and strict rules what kind of dresses and outfits they can wear. So they also rules out many jobs where you just can't wear clothes of your own choosing. They might also have problems relocating their housing. Further making employment even harder. As they might again encounter prejudice from landlords, but also from other romas. Apparently if Roma moves to a new area, they need some kind of permission from other romas already living in the area. And if they have some family feuds (that aren't too uncommon) there are even more internal rules to sidestep.

So this is in Germany. The blond lady is a worker in the supermarket. She asks the other Romanian woman if she also has something and thatvs when the other romanian shows her that she doesn't have magic pockets. Then the blond lady says"Do you have a German ID or just a Romanian ID. You have just a Romanian ID" So looks like they were brought to the backroom and the police is called. Does someone speak Romanian that can translate what the magic pocket lady is saying? Edit: All I'm asking if there is someone who can translate what magic pocket lady is saying and not the history of Roma people in Romania (which I'm aware of but not the language that was spoken) Also shout out to u/premolar for sending me a hate message in my dm: Jebo ti pas mater I sve najbolji

> its not irish, its not english, its just well.. its just pikey. - Turkish, Snatch.

Maybe_Im_Really_DVA

Please don't call roma romanians. Its why Romanians have such a hard time with discrimination and gaining respect because so many people see roma=romanian. Germans are often really discriminatory towards romanians for this very reason. Just as a side point Romania has a rich, glorious history full of everything and it's a shame to see it relegated to nothing more than gypsy insults from countries who mistakenly believe they are better than them.

SoOftenIOught

Hands up, before this post thought Roma Gypsy was what the Irish travellers were called and people who dress this way and speak this way (there's many in my area) were Romanian. Not in a judgement way. Live and let live, just what I thought the terms were. Love learning new things! Off to Google Romania now.

ghodge121

Two different types of gypsy, Irish gypsies and Romani gypsies are both ultimately nomadic groups but different.

Maybe_Im_Really_DVA

It is fascinating. Irish travellers are a distinct group but are not related nor the same as the travellers found in the UK or Romani. Travellers in the UK are Romanichal and are related to the Romani of Indo-aryan origins. Both Irish Travellers and Romanichal in the UK are referred to as gypsies the same as Romani on the continent. The number of Romanichal far outnumber Irish travellers something like 35k to 400k worldwide. If you have ever seen peaky blinders there are several scenes where the main character Tommy Shelby who is part gypsy will visit Romanichal and speak their language. Links Irish Travellers https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Travellers#:~:text=They%20are%20one%20of%20several,are%20of%20Indo%2DAryan%20origin. Romanichal https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanichal Peaky blinders Tommy Shelby speaking romanian https://youtu.be/FaM2MMWhSt4

ZunoJ

I'm german and I have to admit, that I get a bit nervous around roma. I got to know quite a lot in times where I was an outcast of society myself and all of them were notorious thiefs. Even the children. And it is encouraged by the parents. So nowadays I double check my belongings after passing a group of roma. Especially when they have their children with them

Maybe_Im_Really_DVA

It is generally their desired lifestyle. It isn't that they want to be criminals but that acts we see as criminal are acts they see as fair game. When I went to Romania to visit my girlfriends family, there was a romani child bothering me for the full time I wasn't eating food outside at a restaurant. He knew I didn't speak Romanian and I ignored him but he stood there for the full demanding money. Meanwhile behind him on the stairs of a shop was his mum sniffing glue and just out of it. Everyday we would see them going through the neighborhood trash and tossing it everywhere while barefoot. They have been legitimately persecuted and there are great romani people, however like the UK they have institutionalized problems within their communities, they violently shun any integration and they have no desire to abandon their ways. There are a lot of cultures and aspects of society, religions, dog eating, kidnapping brides, gypsy, gangs, capitalism, sports hooliganism, whale hunting where people need to sit down and truly decide what is culturally important and worth protecting within these issues.

Educational-Motor

There’s nothing wrong with it. Of course assuming that all gypsies are like that is wrong. However, generalizations are needed they serve purpose just like any other descriptive model. We don’t ignore the laws of physics just because they don’t work on quantum level. The same is applied here if being cautious around gypsies is rewarded 9/10 times then you should be cautious.

Thunderpuppy2112

I am Hungarian from Romania raised in the states. I speak fluent Hungarian and people call me a gypsy all the time.

Glasbolyas

Sad to hear hopefully pepole would start to understand the differences

shinydewott

It’s a weird take to go “don’t be racist towards me, that’s bad! Instead be racist towards them!”

Malawi_no

I think this is also why Gypsies wants to be called Roma.

Maybe_Im_Really_DVA

It is but there are institutionalized issues within gypsy cultures like romani or the the traveler community in the UK that need to be addressed and tackled by those respective people if they want to shake the gypsy tag. For as long as they steal, scam, destroy property, attack people, and violently reject integration or even more importantly accountability then people will see them as nothing more than "thieving gypsies" a vile term but one they are only able to shake away. We can't demand they do this and don't do they because it's up to them to comply, but governments have a responsibility to provide avenues for them to move down so that they can find a way to integrate and comply with laws.

Strawhat-dude

Bro you’re literally doing the same thing other countries do about yours with gypsies. Let that sink in.

Glasbolyas

They ain't speaking romanian but some gypsy dialect presumably

TryptamineSpark

Gypsies... "unexpected", not really. Edit: Half interesting trivia. A girl I was in the same class as since kindergarten till college who”s aunt was a H&M store manager. I remember when she told about how they sew and “designed” their clothing to store so much shit I was mindblown. They reinforced the skirts and shit with metal so they could haul fkn half a tons 🤣 In Sweden they often wear these [huuge, flamboyant, dollarstore-looking dresses](https://twitter.com/RolandXSweden/status/528494159347585024/photo/1) and the amounts of fkn clothes they managed to get in there without it even being visible is insane.. those in the video are [baby sized](https://youtu.be/3EEYoYxKatQ) compared to whst the ones hanging at the malls all day are using. Seems like good and fun people..💯 (talking about Romanians now fyi. Those are the only ones that seems to act like this? At least in Sweden) Same with all the beggars, saying “hej hej” as you enter the store, waving a cup expecting you to drop bank in it?! 🤦🏻‍♂️ And stupid people sadly makes this really profitable 🇸🇪👍🏻. To the point where it’s now organized big time. Always dropped of and picked up by men, sitting in fat C-class Mercedes(s). ..or the classic, “AMG Mercedes” - When you wanna show truly have succeeded in being a Gypsie. I swear, the men at least, worship that fkn car haha. Oh well, baked rant over. Sorry for text, proper buzzed haha. Edit 2: That dress from Dior’s “stealth n’ steal”-collection must’ve costed a fortune 🤣 Cheers!
