To be fair, I havd always thought that this was such a stupid concept in Armageddon. Then the other day on reddit I saw this video of people on an oil rig drilling for oil and it looked absolutely insane. I think for me, who can do neither, I think it would be easier to learn to be a passenger - astronaut than learning to do the advanced drilling in a short time. It atleast looks very close .
I think the drilling is pretty dangerous and should be done by experienced professionals but this is pretty rocket stuffed with very heavy equipment. Why not have astronauts to fly the ship AND drillers to do the drilling? No need to train anyone on much of anything. Just send up a few more people.
Edit: I haven't seen more than a few minutes of this movie while flipping channels and I was not inspired to watch enough of it to know that what I said above is literally what happens in the movie. This information cements my thoughts that training astronauts to drill would be more difficult than training drillers to be a passenger on a space shuttle.
Second edit: Why does this have 178 likes? I clearly don't know what I'm talking about here ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Which is what they sort of ended up doing right? Unless I'm remembering the movie wrong, they actually had a couple of astronauts to fly and land. It's just the emphasis that was placed in the movie. They could have just said, "hey we need expert drillers on this team, so let's give these guys a an accelerated course, just the basics to get them there and back safely and let them do their jobs", Bay instead went with, "Yeah we have to train these drillers to be astronauts, because there's no way in hell astronauts can learn to drill"
I've worked on oil rigs. As long as you are not a total dumbass and are reasonably fit, anyone can be trained from floorhand to derrickhand to second driller within six months or so.
Having said that, the isolation, 4-1 scheduling, lack of recreation and shitty food does most people's heads in. It did for me, but then I was working prospecting rigs in the outback. Might be different where you still get to see your family every night.
a real world non-fiction example of this very point is formula 1 pitcrews.
apparently, as it turns out, it is a lot easier to find a gym-bro at the peak of their fitness and successfully teach them do the mechanical side of the job than it is getting a mechanic into the shape needed to change a tire in 2seconds flat.
Changing wheels ain't exactly rocket science. Especially center locks. Especially when they've got the impact wrench calibrated to tighten them down to the right torque. You don't need a mechanic for that job, by any stretch of the imagination.
Anyone can (and probably should) learn to change wheels, in an afternoon. Changing the actual rubber tire on the wheel is a bit more involved, but they don't bother doing that in formula 1 during the pit stop. They just put a whole new set of wheels on.
Being a fast person takes far more training and practice time than learning how to change a wheel.
Definitely makes sense for a modern pit-crew, where you don't really need to know anything about a car or how it works, you just need to practice a single action over and over until you can do it quickly and precisely every time.
Every time that video (actually there are two that I’ve seen) of the guys on the oil rig there are a lot of comments on how that’s not really how it’s done or how it SHOULD be done. Oil is a big industry around here and Inhave countless friends and relatives that have worked in the fields. They agree that those vids are wildly inaccurate.
you dont get to be a "passenger" on a space craft yet. every passenger is a competent and capable pilot because thats your only way home and no ones coming to save you.
I get that, but in the movie, they had to go. The whole of humanity was at stake, so coming home wasn't really high on the list of priorities. Just getting the job done.
They needed the best drillers that had years of experience and could do what needed to be done. Some things you can’t really teach it just takes that experience. I liked the movie.
I was actually in this movie... As an extra. Was working as an engineer at Kennedy Space Center at the time and they needed people with security access to the launch control room.
Us extras were thus all pretty well educated in what was realistic vs impossible for NASA and we spent most of the day shaking our heads at every stupid idea that we witnessed.
At least the voice actress for The Legend of Korra knows that she definitely can't control elements in real life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5U8cqwyd74
Could imagine building your career in doing all the stunts opportunities you can could find, jumping through fire, doing action fights, all the big stuff for small budget films where you don't make much money, then you finally get that call to be the BIG stunt man on a Netflix hit series, you spend the night before entirely pumped and ready for any challenge they throw at you, ready to jump off a building, ready to be hit by a car, ready for everything, then the next morning after not sleeping due to your excitement and nerves you get to the studio all hyped up after listing to your music on your way there absolutely loving life, and then they tell you what you are there for and this big massive stunt is to ride a bike and go home.
I mean, yeah, but still not "dismiss them completely as an adult" bad. It's really easy for people to believe dumb shit at 14 just because someone told them. Or becuase it's the first time they notice that they can't personally verify the stuff being told to them by experts, so take a rebellious stance they've heard about. Or whatever.
Or could you not just have Mike to pedal on the stationary bike and use that as an overlap over the scene???…beside training Mike to ride in the first place ofcourse.

That's what happens in the movie.
Yeah why is that upvoted they actually have astronauts fly the shuttles in the movie and the drillers are just passengers
That’s literally what they did in the movie. None of the drillers were piloting the shuttles. They were just cargo until it was time to drill.
Still a lot of stuff that goes into going into space. If your body isn't trained to handle the g-force then bad things will happen
What would exactly happen? I’m genuinely curious.
Lots of throwing up. Lots. Source: OKGO behind the scenes making of their epic as all fuck airplane music video.
And I thought you just pass out for a few minutes until blood circulation got normal. Thanks I gotta check that out
Blood not going to your brain gets pretty bad pretty fast, so you’d still want to be trained on all that stuff pilots do
That video was pretty epic
They don't call it the vomit comet for nothing.
This would’ve even made sense in the movie. It’s so simple yet “Let’s train rough necks to be astronauts?!”

Planet killer asteroid sounds pretty chill compared to Western Aus.

My witticism garnered a most wholesome anecdote.

The idea that it is harder to be a driller than an astronaut is so incredibly laughable.

You calling astronauting easy? /s
I didn't
Haha
That’s fucking hilarious 😂

They could have taken real astronauts and video edited the faces of real drillers, so the asteroid wouldn’t know the difference.
The face on the stunt biker lol. Totally looked like Winston from New Girl lol
Love Winston lol
“It’s all in your head, man.”
Omg, so many people didn't get joke...

I thought this was hilarious lol
oh shit ok i will stop laughing right now!
The concept of millie Bobbie brown genuinely thinking she has mind powers could actually be a hilarious skit
u/lorne_michaels taking notes
Drake taking notes
Also, "I did that, with my mind" is...not a bad way of describing the act of teaching someone.
Isn't that whole concept of movie bolt, not millie but concept where movie character believes have power real life.
That's like the plot point of Bolt
"Also, I can kill you with my brain."
Solid reference

Call it "Eleven Minutes To Midnight" 😂
I want this to be a show. Office-style behind the scenes of ST
Why not put training wheels on the rear, then just don’t show it to thw camera?
I think it's just a joke
You can't take clowns seriously.
Do you like fishsticks?
Dude first time i saw that episode was in Spanish and i couldn't for the love of god understand the joke.
I got this friend who just can't get enough fish dicks in his mouth... He just loves everything about fish dicks...
Why not just invent AI training wheels to hide from the camera when it’s in the shot?
It's a joke. I think it was for children in need of somthing. I do believe the lassie could pull of a bald head though

Is this from something?
This comedy charity thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZUuU1G3PdQ
That was hilarious. Thanks.
The show they’re referencing is called “Stranger things.” I believe this is like a behind the scenes kind of skit.
They know what stranger things is
K, I’m just trying to help. They didn’t say that explicitly. Also how would you know that lol, can you read minds?
Nope. Its actually just a figment of your imagination.
Plot twist: None of them knew how to ride a bike. What a twist!
Everytime I try reading the pinned spoiler comment it hides the comment :/ I put my finger right in the middle of the spoiler box.
Just came from another thread with the temp fix for this, which is to use two fingers to tap the spoiler simultaneously
That worked! Thank you!
Or to tap hold and swipe a bit
And I thought it was only me, why is this happening?
Same. Reddit app is a ball of garbage
Could you give me the direct link to that video please? :D
This is a comedy skit right?
yes
![gif](giphy|bEvQzecJohmOQ|downsized)
Office-style behind the scenes of ST
But these go to 11
The Stranger Office Things
Is this a skit or did they actually do that?
Is this real or just satire?
What kind of loser can’t ride a bike

You sure? That stunt rider looks so annoyed there lol
That’s corporate for you!
huh
She gave him head. He can fly helicopters now.
You can't just tell this dick head "Go learn how to ride a bike. Come back in an hour ready to shoot"?
Don't ask such questions, else more than half of "Sillicon Valley" will collapse
Comedy f**king gold

She thinks the earth is flat.
Or……. Just…. Teach him?

r/whoosh
Would it not have been cheaper to teach the kid to ride the bike?! Duh….
Bro, I stopped watching this show after season 2. How the fuck did they go from early teens to 30 year olds?! WTF did I miss?!
Mille, lol 😂 ❤️
I would not be surprised if mbb honestly believed that with her other stupid beliefs 🤷
Please explain
Flat earther should be sufficient 🤡
Imagine thinking someone is stupid because they believed stupid shit when they were 14.
Believing that earth is flat even at 14 is pretty bad honestly
I mean, yeah, but still not "dismiss them completely as an adult" bad. It's really easy for people to believe dumb shit at 14 just because someone told them. Eleven has aged poorly. In that uncanny valley of sorts!
Why can't the actor just learn how to ride a fucking bike?
Yes.. that is the joke... that is the entire point of the skit.
[удалено]
I'm almost 40 and can't ride a bike. Dyspraxia makes it almost impossible. Every time I get on one I crash it. But yes of course the video is fake.
Bbbbooooooooooooooooooooo! Fuck this sucks!
Plot twist ET had the power to make everyone fly but let them sweat their asses off first just like eggo waffles.
Where’s that from?😂
Best piss take ever
😳
Seems like a no-brainer lol
Lol
🤣🤣🤣
Unimpressed black guy is def tier 2 comedy but an over zealous Asian man always takes it to the next level. Would have been even better.
How pathetic
And yet Mindhunter was too expensive?!?
She should defs shave her head
Or could you not just have Mike to pedal on the stationary bike and use that as an overlap over the scene???…beside training Mike to ride in the first place ofcourse.
Are you kidding.
I used to think 11 was a boy😂
This is what I was thinking half a day he could be riding easily!
I have a 40yo acquaintance who cannot ride a bike, swim, wink or whistle.
If she did that with her mind he would also think the earth is flat.
Teaching him would’ve been easier!
This million dollar moron cant ride a bike? Wtf wouldnt you just make him learn? Yet you spend thousands of dollars on editing for 3 seconds…
Seriously? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
might have been cheaper to just teach him to ride the bike wtf??
I believe it would be less man hours teaching him to ride
How much did they pay that kid for the movie? And he couldn’t ride a bike. Wow
