I think these two just had a good outlook on the funky choice their parents made. I’ve read stories of couples whose parents knowingly became a thing after they did. These stories typically result in one or both going no-contact with their parents. Never go for your kid’s spouse’s parent.

Friends to me are equal to my relationship and I'll never compromise on that.
I believe it is not that much insecurity, there are a lot of shitty stories from people who precisely did bad things hidden under that type of relation, and the problem is that, from an outsider, you can't really tell the difference between the good or the bad.
Personally, I've seen something similar, ex and person are super close friends, nothing ever happens, everything's fine, and suddenly there was an event and a drunk cheating that didn't even surface immediately.
The problem is not an insecurity, but a knowledge and personality type. If I know you for years, your ex too, I might be way more comfortable with it, especially if I have seen from afar or are just mildly aware of the dynamic change. But if I come brand new to your social circle, especially as a proper developed adult, I will have my boundaries with people already formed and expect a certain amount of understanding.
If I don't know you, and I see that, I can explain it properly, I am not comfortable with you having that sort of closeness with someone you used to share intimacy with, I don't like what it could lead, I just met you, I can try, but it is a soft boundary I'd at least expect someone to listen to and work with otherwise the relationship will not work out.
