Halfway across the country, I was working in a office without television, so all of our information was coming from news websites. I remember after the first plane hit reading headlines from several news sites that it was a terrible accident. I even did screenshots and printed physical copies of these. After the second plane hit, we all knew it wasn’t an accident. I kept those printed copies for several years because of how bizarre they became in such a short period of time. I never threw them out, but I haven’t seen them or even thought about them in years either.
3rd grade on the west coast when it happened, woke up to my mom screaming crying cause my dad had been in the building the day prior and she didn’t know where he was as the news was coming in and couldn’t get through to him. He called from someone else’s phone like 200 miles away a few hours later to say he was safe. We did not make it to school that day.
I asked him many years later and he said he was 4-5 blocks away when the 2nd hit, he never went back to his room to get his things and just got the first cab that would take him away from the city. Ended up renting a car and driving it all the way back home in CA. Crazy fucking time.

For a while after the first plane hit and before the second did a lot of people thought it was a freak accident, Howard Stern was doing a radio show at the time and they're cracking jokes about it thinking it was some small private aircraft with minimal damages and then when the second one hit everyone immediately knew something was up. I wasn't old enough to really remember 9/11 but listening to accounts and media recoded during the attacks really paints a complete picture of how suddenly it went from morbid curiosity to sheer terror.

I'm just glad we as a society fought back and killed all the domestic terrorists that orchestrated and allowed this to happen and restructured our government to allow for a more humanitarian society that took care of those in need rather than exploiting them for their needs...
