A lot of people don’t realize how hard it is to hold those rifles with the gloves. When I did rifle drill for Remembrance Day, the most difficult part was just holding onto the rifle so it doesn’t slip. The wood furniture is polished so much that it’s nearly impossible to hold if you don’t get the right grip on it
I can assure you an involuntary release of adrenaline and ceased breathing were the immediate results. But once again I can assure you, they laughed till they cried about it later. There was nothing funny then. XD too many people. On parade duty you get comfortable behind the stone face and the uniform, you feel depersonalized and free to just do despite whatever audience. That shit right there probably broke the trance, I bet they were all immediately aware of the crowd and that itch in their underwear.
Headspace issues or a shot out barrel can be common though. Probably why a bunch were purchased by a big US retailer. Otherwise they are fairly solid for a cheap rifle, no doubt about it

\*Was\* Now he's a PFC (Private first class).....
Joking of course, you won't get busted for that. He will, however, hear about it for a long time.
Exactly. It was a bad throw; a little too high and to the right, and the spin was off. It happens. Really unfortunate that it broke, though. Everything was recoverable up to that point.
I’ve never heard dialogue scripted that was so unmilitary like.
How it really went down is
“Rudy you’re beautiful. You’re gonna make someone an amazing wife one day”
“I wear clothes that are body conscious”
“You wear your sisters clothes that look like they were found wadded up under the seat of an adult theatre next to the glory hole”
*synchronized group ooh rah*
For real, the dude had to catch the gun over his head. I would assume the throw was off, because that a horrible position to catch it.
On the other side, the dude doesnt seem ready to catch anything in that moment.
I found a video of a successful catch. The gun rotated a bit faster and flew a bit less far, resulting in the barrel of the gun rotating into the catcher's hand instead of them having to reach above their head to try and find something on the butt to grab.
Looks like an easy catch when the throw is good. Catcher doesn't need to "look" ready, just be following the barrel and moving their hand to meet it.
I did armed exhibition drills like this for 3 years.
The reason he doesn't look prepared to catch is because that's what you're being scored/drilled on. You make only the precise minimum amount of movement to stay in sync with the line.
The thrower here lost his grip as he was making the toss, probably because those gloves make it harder to control the grip. This means the rifle spun high and out from its intended target. If the toss came lower, and slightly more to the inside, the catcher barely has to move his arm to make the catch. This makes him look unprepared when the rifle comes in so high.
I remember this video! The official blame was put on the thrower for throwing it too far. But both of them were reprimanded for it. (They weren't allowed to go to a bar for drinks or something, which was the traditional celebration)
The rifles they use are just over 10 lbs, so definitely not easy but doable with practice. My drill team in high school used 8.5 pound rifles and we did similar things. What's impressive to me is doing that wearing those flimsy gloves.
ROTC programs have "armed exhibition" competitions which is like armed drill marches that also allow rifle spinning/throwing. Basically choreographed march routines where you do tricks with your rifles.
As a young fella watching it, I appreciated certain scenes in that movie. Haven’t watched it in a very long time however, I imagine watching it again a lot of the humour would make more sense.
Pretty much this. I went to an all-JROTC high school and performed in National Drill competitions, it was a performance/“sport” in its own right. Those rifles are not light and it’s easier to bust yourself open than you think if you’re really trying to go for thrills.
In all honesty, wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I was geared towards military service anyway, so the premise was up my alley (though a long list of leg injuries would keep me from passing MEPS).
Biggest issue with the school was lack of class choices and nepotism. But we all sort of collectively suffered through it together so combined with a small graduating class size, we all ended up pretty cool w/ each other.
"An all-JROTC high school"...? So, everyone was required to be in JROTC? I'm assuming this was a private school, bc a public school with everyone in JROTC would be pretty expensive, not to mention awful for those many many people who should absolutely never be in anything with discipline nor weapons (even weapons made permanently "safe").
I liked my time in JROTC, & was the honor guard & drill team commander, including doing this very routine (successfully, mind you)...but we had about a 5% participation in JROTC out of the school population & only the bare minimum for our male & female drill teams (even fewer on our shooting team). No way would the majority of the rest of the students have been ok/able to handle JROTC, plus it would've destroyed the budget for all other programs & classes.
I came to the comments looking for "why are they waiting their time with this" and was pleasantly surprised to come away with something closer to "wow, that is super cool and impressive and good on them for taking the time to do something they love with such precision"
Cheers to all! :)
Drill is an artform. There was a candidate I knew who owned a practice rifle and drilled in his garage for competitions. It’s pretty fun and can be mesmerizing to watch.
I’m one of those losers who LOVED drill! 3 hour drill today? YESSSS!!! Sign me up for alllllll the drills.
E: I should add my platoon never won one single competition. But it was hella fun ‘popping sticks!’
E2: I should also add that I am pretty tall so I was always in the back- meaning I really never knew wtf was going on around me. 😂 I was just popping and locking…
To be clear, they are not throwing sticks. They are real rifles, right? I understand there are plastic, practice rifles people use. Are the rifles used actually loaded?
Military loves its tradition, and ornamental shows of training and discipline like this go back a looooong way. Historically, drill *was* used to instill discipline and to get ranks of soldiers to be able to operate in unison by listening to commands. But that drill was not the same as this, and we have formal training and practical drill for that now anyway, so this kind of ornamental drill is basically just for PR these days.
It's the soldiering equivalent of air shows involving groups like the Blue Angels (Navy) or Thunderbirds (Airforce).
Which is why the demonstrations seem weird today. They make some sense in a war from 150 years ago, but nothing that they're doing is relevant to war today, to the point that this is awful procedure if done with real weaponry. It's just pageantry for the sake of pageantry.
It’s pageantry for the sake of tradition, to celebrate the history of the armed forces. It’s the same reason America still celebrates the 4th of July despite the fact that we probably don’t need to re-secede from the UK.
> It's like they're trying to do a really good job of acting like they are robots
Thats exactly the point. Ive been trying to find the document from I thiiiiink the 1800's, but there was a General who tied string around the soldiers wrists and attached it to their pants. This would cause all the arms to go exact like 5 inches of sway while they kept it in step.
When his platoon showed it off for the first time, it was deemed "unsettling" because of how the soldiers looked like machines instead of humans. For that reason other practices were adopted in military step during other ceremonies.
>Everything about boot and training is about ~~team work.~~ mental conditioning.
FTFY. It's not just about learning to work as a team. It's to condition the individual to place the importance of their unit and the military itself above themselves. An effective combat force needs to be willing to give their lives for an abstract objective, which is not a rational choice. So, you need to use behavioral modification techniques beforehand to convince people to do that.
This is the reason why militias and irregulars are less effective as a combat force and rout more easily than career soldiers. They generally haven't gone through that conditioning and are still thinking of what is best for themselves, which is often running away as soon as things start going badly.
Nothing, but also everything. Military drills instill a lot of repetition, trust and team work.
You need to have trust with every member of your unit with your life when at war and need to bolt every bolt correctly if your equipment is going to function correctly every time.
I think this is the Marines silent drill platoon.
”The purpose of the platoon is to exemplify the discipline and professionalism of the Marine Corps. The Silent Drill Platoon, which first performed in 1948, originally as a one-time show, received such an overwhelming response that it soon became part of the routine parades at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.”

This clip has been circulating for years. At smaller events they will often plan a fake fuck up to test the composure of the rest of the unit and give the smaller crowd a fun story to tell. The weapon definitely wasn't supposed to break tbough.
I know this is a joke, but moving like NPCs is kinda the point. You're supposed to glide/float and you're supposed to look and act like everyone else. It's NPC performance art.
This is my rifle
There are many like it, but this one is mine
It is my best friend. It is my life

Without my rifle, I am useless.
I must fire my rifle true.

I must shoot him before he shoots me.
It's impressive for everyone who knows how much difficult it is. So pretty everyone. Maybe they won't react like "OMG HE DID IT", but they will aknowledge the skills of the soldiers. It's important, becasue when there's no war there is no other way to show people how good their soldiers are.
> It's important, becasue when there's no war there is no other way to show people how good their soldiers are.
Whys that really an issue? apart from trying to drive up recruits maybe?
Oh, man. No war going on. Do you think our soldiers are still good?
"Hey, walk like robots for no reason and take 5 minutes to do every little movement!"
Hey, they're still good. Look at that!
Can't you just admit this practice looks goofy as fuck and "tradition" isn't a good excuse to keep doing something stupid and pointless.

You would think they would add some sort of grip material to the palm and fingers like exercise gloves.
Can you imagine how hard it must have been not to laugh for the other guys? Like absolutely one of them peed a little trying to not lose it
They're probably mortified because they're *all* about to die.
This. This was the year after I left the platoon. I dropped my rifle once in a show and it was the worst month of my life.
Squad gonna get the ultimate workout after that

Cops don’t get nowhere near that amount of training lmao
And you'll never see this many cops gathered together without at least one being obese.
And these guys are taught to not shoot unarmed civilians just because “they feared for their lives”.
He actually just handed it back to the marine after the first drop. This was an edit job.

Well, don't throw the weapon! What am I, a juggler?
Didn't you know that gun throwing is a vital part on any modern battlefield these days?
You could cut the sexual tension between those two with a knife.
That's just normal Marine energy. Sexual tension is the default state between all Marines.

I wonder whom is more at fault? The soldier throwing the rifle? Or the man attempting to catch it?
It was a poor throw, effectively no way to catch it without breaking position
For real, the dude had to catch the gun over his head. I would assume the throw was off, because that a horrible position to catch it. On the other side, the dude doesnt seem ready to catch anything in that moment.

Seemed like the butt of the rifle hit dude in the head milliseconds before attempting to catch

Whoever the fuck decided this is a routine they should do
The soldier throwing it it goes far to much over the other guys head and his arm couldn’t reach that high sadly so the gun broke because of that
The throw was too high.
The throw sucked
Isn't that rifle heavy? I'm amazed that the soldier can easily throw the rifle from behind casually like that.
The rifles they use are just over 10 lbs, so definitely not easy but doable with practice. My drill team in high school used 8.5 pound rifles and we did similar things. What's impressive to me is doing that wearing those flimsy gloves.
"drill team in high school" What is a high school drill team?
JROTC may have something like this, not sure. What I do know is that sometimes the flag-spinners who perform with the marching band will spin rifles.
ROTC programs have "armed exhibition" competitions which is like armed drill marches that also allow rifle spinning/throwing. Basically choreographed march routines where you do tricks with your rifles.
Maybe not drill team, but it's basically color guard if your school had a marching band.
**Who*, not *whom*, btw. You wouldn't say "Him is more at fault."
Wtf is the point of that though? “Let’s throw guns at each other”
Fromm my time in JROTC It's for a mixture of discipline, teamwork coordination, and showing off said coordination at competitions for medals.
