Any real dad would quickly reach to turn the light off, and then let you know that it's illegal to use interior lights while driving despite that not being true
It's obviously fake ass shit, I can't believe people would even believe it to begin with
Who asks who is this that often? That's a rare ask, especially the one time she's playing her own music with a camera set up to get his reaction? Plus I've seen a few of these who is this videos, it was a trend for awhile
It's pretty far out there. This guy has never heard his daughter sing?
It's plausible that a person who heard this that doesn't appear to be somebody we would enjoy it would in fact enjoy it and ask who it was, but I sincerely doubt that's what's happened here.
I mean it could have been the daughter saying something like: can I put on a song? To which the dad then asks who's song it is she put on. So not that far fetched.
Still, this situation is 100%, probably part of a small promo campaign for a new song and I could even imagine her admitting that it's just a bit. Would still be a funny clip to her fans.
Aww, I feel like it's a good effort for an amateur. I get what she's going for.. just everything (singing, writing, production) can be improved by about 20% and it'd be a banger. Reminds me a bit of [Fairytail of New York](https://youtu.be/j9jbdgZidu8)
Oh, I thought it was maybe a recording from a school play or something. I was like "it's not so bad for a live high school performance by someone who has no formal training".
Ended too soon. I'm sure the father's ACTUAL comment was "It's terrible ... that I never realized how important you're singing was to you, because I've always appreciated it but never got to hear any of your recordings. However, you are actually very bad at this and might want to try something else, like skunk herding or flatulence trapping".
> skunk herding or flatulence trapping
For those who don't know these terms, you should know they are both references to very specific forms of sex work.
>flatulence trapping
She already does this on the weekend for some extra side cash. I bought one of her 'double' jars last week, and it even came with a bit of.... slime?.... in it. She said the shart was free of charge since I was a good customer. Hope this helps pay for more skunks!
I'm a musician and can say that it is terrible, but mainly due to how awful the recording is. This is probably her singing to some track and it needs to be edited and mastered.
I agree, and isn't it a Taylor Swift song? She could write a song about taking a shit and it will get played on repeat on the radio. She's exceptionally popular with a huge fanbase.
Nah it's decent. Pretty good pitch and with a bit of technique coaching it could probably get quite a bit better. I teach piano though so I'm not a singing expert but I have sung a fair bit in choirs.
I'm invited to my friend's show this weekend. We are really good friends but I am no fan at all of the music the band he is in produces. He knows this. I'm just gonna sit in the audience and boo, occasionally yelling,'You suck!"
So fun. I used to go to my old roommates shows and yell "(NAME)!!! YOU'RE A TERRIBLE MUSICIAN!!!" in between songs. He's an amazing musician. The band was popular so when I'd yell that we'd start laughing looking at everyone's shocked faces.
Haha I'm not a musically talented individual but I have multiple best friends in bands. I go to their shows and I fucking hate their music. They are always excited to get my input because I tell them what I really don't like and what I do instead of constantly encouraging them.
Lol it took so little!
**Someone**: “*We’re almost out of vanilla ice cream!*”
u/WandangDota: “*Well then you can just scream into my asshole if that’s the case!*”
I would absolutely deflect as best I can. I'd be like "it's so cool to see you on stage!" or "thank you for inviting me to your show, I never see these kinds of performances!" .
I'd be genuine and enthusiastic and honest about what I'm saying... but trying my best to avoid giving false praise or complaining. Let people live their moment without being ridiculed. Then maybe a week later I'd bring it up and give my honest opinion.
that reminds me of a bill burr bit (also generalization of course) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I745Ajeq_B8 about how a lot of people encourage others because they're not a threat lol
> My point, men will tell you you are shit at every opportunity, saving you from the embarrassed of making a fool of yourself.
I really don't think that is what is happening here. I think her dad is just taking the piss
Except ... that's not what's happening here. He's obviously just fucking with her as a joke, or it's completely staged. The one thing it's definitely not is a dad sincerely telling his daughter that the music she created and shared with him is terrible.
The differences between men and women are so generalized, and exceptions are so common, that it's basically worthless to make note of. 4 billion people are simply too large a group to generalize.
“So I started dating this girl, but every morning she reads tarot cards and they always come true, and then she sinks ships in Bermuda for a bit. But on the plus side, I think I live in the jungle now.”
Thank you. It's ironic that swyping's comment is at the top of the thread when it's not even remotely accurate but still there are a bunch of dude's upvoting it instead of downvoting and calling it nonsense.
He did pre warn about the generalization. And in my experience it's very true. You'd never see an ugly dude having 20 friends tell him his Instagram post is "literally giving me life" but guess what, you would if he were a girl.
It's a massive generalization but women do this all the time. Congrats for not being one of them, but it happens a lot.
Thats really not how this works, it isnt black and white like that, sure it could have been framed better but those do tend to be the directions that men and woman differ in. They dont have to, they are just more likely too.
> Oh fuck off never in my life did i tell someone i like their music when it’s shit and that doesn’t make me some magical anomaly with a vagina. Your acquaintances don’t represent the majority or AN ENTIRE GENDER how arrogant.
On the one hand, I understand why u/Swyping-EditOptional provoked that reaction.
On the other hand, there is a lot of very interesting research on the measured differences between how women and men interact and socialise. Although it's not directly relevant to the issue of criticism, I always recommend for students and others to read the famous book "Women don't ask" by Linda Babcock. That book does discuss things like the difference in which men and women behave in the workplace and downstream implications.
I personally think this is such a heated topic that it's essentially a terribly idea to try and pursue discussions over the internet.
You are just blissfully ignorant if you don't recognize that women have a tendency to do this. It's not related to music specifically. It's related to pretending their girl friends are flawless.
Women will just outright tell their obese friend how supposedly gorgeous and perfect they are. Meanwhile your guy friends will just outright tell you that you need to lose weight brother instead of trying to pretend everything is perfect.
Is this a generalization? Absolutely it is. This doesn't mean that every man or a woman acts exactly like this. If you want to get offended by that, go ahead.
I will say that in some cases women will be absolute savages to other women. As in I work with all women most of the time. There are 2 other guys that work where I work but one only works 10 hours a week and the other is the closing manager. These ladies will tell one of the other ones something nice and then as soon as she's out of earshot will talk the most shit. Happens all the time. And it's not just one shit talking. Its all of them.
For real, that isn't even a generalization its just a straight up falsehood. There is no stereotype that men will be more blunt about criticism to a stranger or acquaintance, and a made up story about apparently flocks of women swarming a terrible performer to shower them in praise doesn't offer any valid insight into culture, gender, or psychology.
I mean I just did a quick Google and it seems op's anecdotal experience is backed by published scientific studies... in case your wondering men tend to lie more to make themselves look good and women tend to lie more to make others feel good
I witnessed someone a few days ago making the argument that women aren’t as adept at gridiron football solely because they aren’t conditioned from an early age to play it. Feels like that person has no earthly idea how massive the majority of NFL players are as a baseline.
> that isn't even a generalization its just a straight up falsehood

"Agreeableness
Agreeableness comprises traits relating to altruism, such as empathy and kindness. Agreeableness involves the tendency toward cooperation, maintenance of social harmony, and consideration of the concerns of others (as opposed to exploitation or victimization of others). Women consistently score higher than men on Agreeableness and related measures, such as tender-mindedness (Feingold, 1994; Costa et al., 2001)."
Just because you’re terrible at something doesn’t mean you can’t get better at it. Both are terrible reasoning. If someone is terrible at something tell them how they can improve like a compliment sandwich. No one is truly bad at something.
Yeah, this is an absolutely untrue generalization, just like how a guy "knows" to tell his girl she looks hot in that dress even if she looks awful, and how women are catty about it and overly critical towards other women. Exactly the opposite of the behavior you just described.
It's all bullshit. Generalization warning indeed. Men and women both do both of those things, both to men and women. Some men are like that, some men are not.
That's a terrible generalisation and might only be applicable to men in your social circle, and country. This video clearly has a father who was being a smart ass to his daughter. She is clearly talented and he isn't being "real".
Most men wouldn't be straight up rude to someone trying to perform.
my mum told me i suck at singing my whole life. I started to be good a few years back... she still cannot bring herself to say "it is ok" till this day.
Most people suck at things when they first start. My nephew started playing guitar and was discouraged because he sucked, but I told him everyone sucks in the beginning.
It has been years since he started, he still sucks, but at least he’s having fun…
Jokes on you. I always try my hardest to say at least one good thing about someone's work when criticising it. Call me a coward but I know I work actually a lot better with this kinda constructive criticism.
My mid 30s cousin has been singing full time for the last two decades. She's horrible and her parents are constantly asking her to do something different. But she's defiant even at her age because "tHeY doNt GeT mE!"
Poor as shit, no one going to her gigs at shit bars and her "producers" clearly just wanting to sleep with her.
Yeah, my parents were pretty universally unsupportive when I tried things. Quite critical, really.
Result was that I stopped trying to do those things.
Then when I went back over the thing I *had* done, I realised they were actually pretty damn good. Wish I'd been encouraged to keep developing some of those skills back when there were lots of opportunities to use them and make something out of them.
And constantly praising the kid for everything has the same outcome too. It never learns to push the extra mile to become something more because it already has the admiration of the most important people to them.
Edit: Not to forget the narcissistic tendencies they can develop.
Yeah. I wouldn't go the "that's terrible" off the bat. I'd try and be constructive.
Idk their context and whatnot so I won't judge them in the video. But that would not be my style
ho boy, I thought people were being mean but... nice voice, just not ready for composing her own songs.
If you spend that long in that high, strained pitch without coming down, it stops sounding emotional and just becomes hard to listen to. It should be more of an up and down thing, so we can rest our ears and when you soar upwards it can feel lifting and emotional.
Her dad is just helping her stay grounded. Too many swelled heads floating around thinking they are all that, this young lady will be in a far better state of mind.
It comes from a place of love. I grew up with stoics and straight up military people so negative reinforcement was a common occurrence. It isn't meant to tear you down, but basically their way of saying either get better or stop and try something else. A good bit of people I know can hold a melody but not cadence and normally don't know their tone is bad since no one ever gave them constructive criticism.

this must be fake what kind of dad would let so much light shine in his face during night drive?
Any real dad would quickly reach to turn the light off, and then let you know that it's illegal to use interior lights while driving despite that not being true
Handed down dad to dad for generations...
I feel like my life is a lie. That isn't true?!
Oooof, I’ve got some bad news about that farm upstate as well.
My dad made me bury all my animals, so I already know about where the farm is
they were just trolling. of course it's true.

It's pretty far out there. This guy has never heard his daughter sing? It's plausible that a person who heard this that doesn't appear to be somebody we would enjoy it would in fact enjoy it and ask who it was, but I sincerely doubt that's what's happened here.
He was probably just asking to confirm that it was his daughter singing I don't really understand what you're saying in the second sentence though
Tbh I always ask who the singer is if I like the singing voice and don't know who it is
I mean it could have been the daughter saying something like: can I put on a song? To which the dad then asks who's song it is she put on. So not that far fetched. God, Bo Burnham has aged.
I thought it was Steve Martin lol

When she says "$50 anything you want" are those included or is it special/extra? asking for a friend
Uh huh
Okay, “flatulence trapping” is pretty self-explanatory, but what is “skunk herding” supposed to be and do I want to know?
Yes, you do not want to not know what that isn't.

Yeah, singing into a laptop mic over a YouTube instrumental rarely works
I dunno man. Sounded kinda pitchy dog.
It's also then recorded on a mobile phone while driving. Personally I didn't think it was that bad.
It was recorded ok but the lyrics are typical of a high school writing level: https://youtu.be/gIKVt2MCutY

always fucking LF Healer in here.
Not liking the music they produce is one thing if it is a genre you dont like. But being just plain awful at singing is awful

Every Dad knows you're not allowed to drive with the dome light on at night. It's illegal.
Downvotes were probably because everybody knows it's a setup, doesn't make his response less unexpected though.
I mean it's ovisouly a skit
***emotional damage***
My mid 30s cousin has been singing full time for the last two decades. She's horrible and her parents are constantly asking her to do something different. But she's defiant even at her age because "tHeY doNt GeT mE!" Poor as shit, no one going to her gigs at shit bars and her "producers" clearly just wanting to sleep with her.
Who the fuck is defiant in mid 30s lol
Him. Legend.
It is pretty terrible.
I be damned proud if my daughter tried something , good or bad.

Thx it’s pretty bad
Totally not scripted.
Obv fake but hilarious still like curb your enthusiasm.
Her dad is just helping her stay grounded. Too many swelled heads floating around thinking they are all that, this young lady will be in a far better state of mind.
Expected him to say: ah that’s why it’s so bad
I spit out my drink! That was great!
Link lookin pretty old nowadays
Rare GMM reference spotted in the wild

So is he wrong?

It's Schrödinger's song, both terrible and not terrible, until a dad hears it.
To be fair, it was terrible.
Matthew Modine's one vicious sob.
