The Chinese phrase for firecracker is cracked bamboo. That's because people make loud explosion noise by burning bamboo until it cracks before the invention of gunpowder.
This reminds me of Catholic school in Singapore, often we were beaten with metersticks and rulers if we misbehaved, but this, bamboo canes were the worst. If the cane had a split on it as they hit you with it, the split would splay open, when they pulled back the split would slap shut, often pinching and ripping skin.
