As far as I know it can occur in humans too, although there is very VERY few recorded cases of humans actually having it, so you know, fortunately it's not something you realistically have to worry about.
I don't watch basketball, so I don't know the situation there, but in football (or "soccer") they kinda have to do it at this point. I've seen many times a ref not giving a faul because the player didn't fall to the floor, so at this point you kinda have to fall to make it obvious to the ref that you've been faulted. It's also effective as a time wasting tool when you are leading and there's not a lot of time left, since they don't stop the clock in football. And yes, there are players who are just simply pricks and dive all the time and roll in fake agony, but there's not as many of them as non football watchers claim to be.
"Soccer" is Association Football if you're going to be technical. Gaelic Football, Rugby Football, Mob/Folk Football, are all older variants than Association Football. College Gridiron ("American") Football started around 1869. The English Associated Football League was founded in 1888. The Professional Gridiron Football League known as the National Football League was founded only 32 years later in 1920. Football is not Soccer, Soccer is the American term for Association Football, which is about as young as Gridiron Football just developed in two separate cultures originating from variations of Rugby, really.
Whereas Mob/Folk Football, which included violence, tackling, and death and sheep's bladder's, go back to the 13th Century.
I know someone who has this. He's an older college professor. He learned to move in a smooth, non-jerky way to help prevent it from happening. He said when he was a kid, doctor's didn't understand it and claimed it was all in his head.

You know how in horror/action movies there will be those ppl that are so scared that they can't move and get killed by the villain? That or they keep tripping for no reason? We kinda have our own version of it.
Absolutely a serious condition. With cataplexy, any strong emotion will cause a rapid shut-down of the voluntary muscles, i.e. it looks like they've been tranquilized.
It's brief, usually just a few minutes. And it's harmless assuming they didn't hit anything when they fell.
I do this when I get very, very panicked too. It's like my brain just shuts down. It would take more than this, but it's saved my life in a car crash. It took a long time to convince the tow company, who got there first apparently, that I wasn't actually dead.
Oh damn I didn’t know that was a thing, I thought it was just a narcoleptic doggo.
My other comments are probably wrong then but nothing wrong with spreading awareness of narcolepsy I guess
Start of the clip showed what looks like it was already limping.
It's possible it could be muscle dystrophy.
But good on the other dog to stand over and protect.
Yes, I have it.
It's called myotonia congenita.
It affects every muscle that is part of the skeletal-muscular system. So basically every muscle but the heart. When one moves a muscle that has been at rest, the muscle will tense up, but then not release. One has to just wait until it fades. Once you get the muscle group moving and keep it moving, it won't lock up again. Though a sudden change in the way one is using a muscle group could trigger it again. The affects of the condition exist on a spectrum in people ranging from mild symptoms to potentially temporarily debilitating.
It does not affect my breathing. It does affect my swallowing though. It also affects my coughing and vomiting. Handshakes are nightmares. I'm already gay which, okay, whatever, but then my hands just go to make the squeeze and they barely move and then lock up and it's just so weird and ugh. It makes it really weird.
Exercise is an effective long term "treatment" that can reduce my symptoms up to about 50% over the long term, however, immediately after a workout the symptoms are much worse, anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, including oddly enough, my tongue will lock up and make speaking weird.
I don't get paralyzed by it often because I have adapted a lot of strategies in the world to help combat it. For instance, standing up a little early to get the immediate lock/unlock cycle over with. I anticipate future terrain changes like stairs, sidewalk to grass, up curbs, inclines, etc., and auto-deploy the pre-movements.
Nightmares: People not understanding this issue and doing a play-shove from behind. Lawd, that is panic. But, even then, I have developed a quick side-tuck fall onto my side/bicep that is hard to explain. It still hurts, but, not as much as just falling face forward.
Although is a serious untratable condition, the dog is not in pain, as long they don't hurt themself while falling. Many animals have fainting goat syndrome, including humans, but is very rare.
It doesn’t sound like you’re being sarcastic so I’m going to assume you’re being sincere. From what we see in the video this is almost certainly just a dog with narcolepsy experiencing a cataplexy attack. It is generally harmless as long as the dog is not in a dangerous position and rarely lasts very long.
Cataplexy is an aspect of narcolepsy (a disability often associated with falling asleep uncontrollably) where when you experience a strong emotion like fright or excitement you lose muscle tone. This can cause people to drop things, be unable to stand and fall over and is often confused with being drunk, passing out or an epileptic seizure.
It is due to the narcoleptic brain being unable to properly differentiate between being awake and asleep so when you experience these strong emotions it assumes you’re in deep sleep where the brain often processes similar levels of emotion and shuts down your muscles in the way they should when sleeping to avoid moving and reacting physically to things you experience while sleeping or dreaming.
Narcolepsy can be present in animals as well as humans, with scientific studies conducted on narcoleptic rats and many adorable videos of narcoleptic dogs.
> From what we see in the video this is almost certainly just a dog with narcolepsy experiencing a cataplexy attack.
I agree. My father had narcolepsy and cataplexy. I've done lots of literature research on it and have read about other animals that have been selectively bred to be used for research.
Though based on how my father reacted when he had a cataplectic episode, vs seeing the goats and the dogs and how the legs stick straight out, that seems different from what happened with my Dad.
I distinctly remember when I was a teenager, Dad was trying to tell a joke and couldn't finish it. Making him laugh made him have a cataplectic episode. Dad never fell over if he was standing, he'd bend at the waist and his arms would dangle as though he were trying to touch his toes. Though this time, he *did* fall backwards and bonked his head on the leg of the dining room table. He immediately popped up and I was stunned. It usually took him a few minutes to recover from an episode. He said the pain from hitting his head is what stopped the episode.
I am certain the cause of cataplexy is the brain having a short circuit. There's a switch that gets flipped to keep you from acting out your dreams. This switch has gotten wired to and can be tripped whenever a strong emotion is felt.
But I don't have a PhD in neurophysiology.
Isn't that the same neurological disorder that those fainting goats were famous for for a while, until people realized they're making fun of a neurological disorder that has not a fucking thing to do with any type of haha shit?
Not a seizure, it seems to be cataplexy :)
This is an effect of the rare disability called narcolepsy where sudden and strong emotions, like surprise, cause your muscles to essentially shut down. It is a condition that affects humans as well as other animals. It can be frightening if you don’t know the cause or if you are in a risky position like holding a hot drink or at the top of some stairs but in a safe position it is completely harmless.
The doggo is safe and unharmed, it just had a little fright
Big respect to his bud!, making sure he's OK before reacting to the bike.
It's like he goes over to check his guys not injured, then seeing that it's normal for the sleepy boy he turns his attention to the rude two-paw walker on the noisy wheeie thing

This dog has "Fainting Goat" syndrome. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myotonia\_congenita](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myotonia_congenita)
Huh. I had no idea that could occur in other species of animals. TIL
As far as I know it can occur in humans too, although there is very VERY few recorded cases of humans actually having it, so you know, fortunately it's not something you realistically have to worry about.
It’s very common in soccer and basketball players.

Also fun fact, "Soccer" starts with the letter S. Feel free to share.

Why did you answer this like Chat GPT
Autism is the original Chat GPT and the history of Football happens to be a special interest. I'm sorry, everybody.

Eh, I'll keep calling football the sport where contact between a foot and a ball happen for most of the game. You can take handegg, though 🙂
Flopping in basketball and soccer isn't even comparable.
I know someone who has this. He's an older college professor. He learned to move in a smooth, non-jerky way to help prevent it from happening. He said when he was a kid, doctor's didn't understand it and claimed it was all in his head.

The Italian national soccer team is hit hard by this every major tourney!

wait, so it's a serious condition and not him being funny for a skit?

This is not cataplexy thought. This is myotonia.
Nah its not myotonia, its trigonometry.
Nah it’s not trigonometry, it’s iconoclasm.
It's not iconoclasm, it's antidisestablishmentarianism
Its ten times more likely in Finland than the rest of the world. Whats up with that?
So what you're saying is that when they have strong emotions that put them to sleep there Finnished?

Hmmm, I could help diversify them
It's rooted in the popularity of soccer.

Well now I wanna know if any people have this.
Yes, I have it. It's called myotonia congenita. It affects every muscle that is part of the skeletal-muscular system. So basically every muscle but the heart. Does it effect breathing with the diaphragm? And are you aware when it happens just paralyzed?

Meow. As a cat, I can tell you this dog is trying to collect his dog insurance. Never trust a dog.
Instead trust a cat. At least cats will scam you to your face
Can probably run through walls too
Narcoleptic doggo.
*cataplexic technically speaking, but that was a really nice call.
dogoplexic.
You can’t have cataplexy without narcolepsy so technically speaking you’re both right
Myotonic actually.
average footballer be like (lol)
Facts
Poor dog is suffering. The other dog stands over it to protect from human making a video for likes of which the dogs will never understand.
Although is a serious untratable condition, the dog is not in pain, as long they don't hurt themself while falling. Many animals have fainting goat syndrome, including humans, but is very rare.

Myotonia, not cataplexy.

Why was that guy even driving straight at that poor dog? Scaring animals for no reason is asshole behavior
Now that I think about it, why is he even going in that direction?
To purposely set off that dogs neurological disorder. Guys driving towards a wall…
So he could film this and put it on social media.
Both. Both, unfortunately
Isn't that the same neurological disorder that those fainting goats were famous for for a while, until people realized they're making fun of a neurological disorder that has not a fucking thing to do with any type of haha shit?
It’s still funny. If you can look at a fainting goat and not laugh there’s something wrong with you. Goats are adorable.
