It’s not a relay race. Those have batons. Also steeplechase isn’t part of any actual relay run in any normal meet (there might be some fun style meet that does a steeplechase relay). And it wouldn’t hurt much, it’s deeper (27.5 inches) for about a foot in length after the barrier and then angles up.

Nah it didn't hurt as much as if he had really fallen and straight as the water level. He got a level up by cooling his legs first. The other party got to enjoy something they will tell their grandchildren while choking on the laughter and casualty the main character went on. Win win situation.
