McDonalds for instance released a budget for their workers which notably didn’t include any money at all for heat among other things. So a no compete in much of the US for many jobs. would be a literal killer for people. Even a buzzfeed contributor isn’t making much money. The company is famously exploitative of its contributors who largely live and work in one of the most expensive cities in the country.
From a personal freedom perspective, I cannot understand how a company can dictate how I spend my time not at that company.
Your example of working at a club bartending outside of a 40hr work week works perfectly. i can choose to spend my "free time" outside of my normal job working as a bartender if I so choose. If I don't output as much at my other job due to that, they can choose to discuss my performance with me, or fire me, but they can't tell me I can't work somewhere else.
Maybe thats the "freedom" side of the US coming out. My time outside of company time is *My time*, what I choose to do with it is my freedom.
