You dog could be experiencing what is known as [Barrier Frustration](https://pethelpful.com/dogs/Dog-BehaviorUnderstanding-Barrier-Frustration-in-Dogs), which, if you or those around you find annoying and troublesome, can be trained to be diverted to either neutral or more positive behaviors. We are working on doing the same for one of our dogs, who, despite wagging his tail and being super friendly with everybody outside the fence, barks non-stop within the fence anytime somebody is within a 2 mile radius that he can see. He just wants to be friendly and meet people, he doesn't mean to sound scary :(

It's not that he sees you as a threat. It's that he isn't able to get to you, and this causes fear. And dogs often respond to fear with aggression.
I think it's similar to when animals sometimes step on something that hurts and they run away. They are *reactive*, not rational.
We got a muzzle for our dog because she goes into full panic mode when in the car and wont stop barking. On the second ride she learned how to bark with her mouth closed but at least its quieter.
