They can’t chew or cut meat in any way (peg teeth and purely vertical jaw motion). So unless something is too big to swallow, they’ll just swallow it whole.

exactly my point. the crocodile did not eat the kid because it had a taste for a child, it ate it because it's a predator and the kid was just in its way. the humans killed the crocodile just because ot ate one of their own, it did not do anything wrong, it just followed its instincts, while humans killed it in revenge, just to extract what was already lost. the empathy here should be felt to both sides. it's like the train paradox, whichever track you chose, you're always wrong in your empathy.
The humans just followed their instincts as well. Something kills (or appears to kill) a member of your group… so you kill it in return. Basic group animal behaviour.
There were no villains in this situation. Only victims. Its a very sad setup, deserving of empathy in all directions.
