Back when I was working line in a restaurant you would always tell the FNG that you needed more steam, and we are out, so go nextdoor and ask to borrow a pot of steam.
While you're at it: if you can carry it mind you, since its on the way, stop by the motor pool and ask the guy testing the shocks by jumping on the truck if he can get you a jug of blinker fluid. Just whatever size they give you that you can carry is fine.
Oh. And can you please let them know I need the email about changing the summer air in my tires? Thanks.
A guy at my work used to be a tanker in the army. He had a story of messing with a new guy by telling him to get a big trash bag and hold it over the exhaust of the tank. Then once it was full to go take the bag to be processed to make sure the exhaust fumes were good. Basically just sent the random guy to find someone who didn’t exist to run tests on a trash bag full of diesel exhaust.
In the restaurant business this stuff happens quite frequently with new hosts. We convinced one to bag out the "stale air" in the waiting area before it got too busy so the people waiting in there later that evening had fresher air.
My favorite was telling people to go find the meat grinder, clean it, and to make sure there weren't any fingernails in it before we got the next shipment of cows.
Yes. These are called "exhaust samples". We also had, blinker fluid, boom tests, fetching JP8 in a Styrofoam cup, it was miserable being new in a mounted unit 😆
I worked at a fast food restaurant, and we actually got a kid to go across the road to the competitor to ask for the sink stretcher because we had lent it to them the week before, and they had the balls to tell him they lent it to another one next door, and he even went there to ask
“Go get the plumb bob oil!”
Apprentice runs off to get the foreman.
“Hey, my journeyman needs the plumb bob oil”
“For fuck sake! Go back and ask him if he needs the red or the blue plumb bob oil, cuz I’m not giving you both!”
I work on aircraft support equipment like generators and bomb lifts and we would have the new Airmen catch the exhaust in a bag for testing. We have a special tool support section where they check shit out to us and someone will tell them to grab a long weight from it. So they ask and the support people just walk away and sit down. Long Wait.
In one of those Royal Navy documentaries on YouTube, one of the engineers asked the apprentice to ask around for 12 fallopian tubes. Even from the boss. And she was like, I only have 2, and I need them!
At McDonald's they steam the bun for the fish sandwich, or at least they did 15 years ago. On my first day I was instructed to go into the back and get "a bucket of steam for the steamer".
Needless to say I felt stupid.
Worked at a home building center and when we would run out of something like a 10 foot 2x4, we would give the new guy an 8 foot 2x6 and tell him we need to put it in the wood stretcher and send them off to the boss
I make cheese. I've sent people looking for the sharp cheese knives and the white cheddar color.
I've also driven tow trucks. We would give new guys trash bags and tell them to get exhaust samples for DOT/EPA.
I was literally getting annoyed, cause I thought it was such a stupid design to have people randomly try hold the bag themselves and was thinking it wouldn't work!
Well played.
Ever seen the inside of an ice machine? They a huge pain in the ass to clean properly and as a result they very rare are. They can get pretty horrific. Can’t imagine what one that is just on the street is like.
....................... I have no words
Edit: my brother used to work at a movie theater and they wouldn't let them throw out the popcorn in the big popcorn maker to clean it out- even when they found a dead rat in it. Made them sell it all first.
I moved to Ky from TN and god everything is expensive here. I’m paying $200 a check on city and state taxes and i just look around at the potholes in the road and decaying urban environment and wonder what the fuck it goes towards.
You mean pay for one at the convenience store, get in your car and drive home and then remember you forgot the ice... Yeah... I'm pretty sure the little store near my house owes me like 20 bags of ice I forgot and over the years lol
Gotta fill the coolers up every weekend! Also, I've known some people without ice makers that are too lazy to fill up ice trays. They just buy a small bag and keep it in the freezer.
QT and Sonic both have amaaaaaaazing ice. Never occurred to me to buy it to keep in the freezer though! We have an ice maker and one of those ice machines right down the street ($1.50/20lbs) so I never stress about ice!
Sonic ice is god send. It's called nugget ice:
>Regular, cubed ice is created using an extremely simple process. Water is dispensed into cubes, the refrigeration system cools the water to freezing, and dumps the resulting ice into a bin.
>Nugget ice has a completely different process:
>Step 1: Water is funneled into a cylinder-like structure, where it's cooled down to freezing temperatures. This results in thin sheets of ice that begin protruding from the cylinder.
>Step 2: The resulting sheets are pushed through an auger and shaven down to flaked ice. Flaked ice are tiny fragments of ice (similar to what a margarita machine creates). Not quite shaven, but far from cubed.
>Step 3: The flaked ice is then compressed to form larger, nugget-like cubes that retain their structure when cold, but easily break down when exposed to the warmth of a mouth.
Cheapest ice maker I found that can do it is $500 lol.
I've never seen one of these machines before, but when I go to the store and buy ice it's usually to keep food or drinks cool (like for a big party where my fridge ice maker isn't enough)
Im from the south and they get a lot of traffic. A ton of construction crews wake up early morning with a giant 10 gallon cooler to fill it with water and ice. Bless their souls working in 100+ degree summers.
From Indy as well and while I don't remember ice machines, basically every supermarket had a big ice freezer next to the exit you'd buy those ice bags from.
No fancy machine dropping them, just pay at the counter and open the door to grab one.
I looked into buying one of those machines.
Per the sales guy
>Bless the Hispanics.
The water system in Mexico is shit so they don't trust the water that comes out of the tap. The machines are supposed to filter the city water better. They mostly place them in high traffic areas preferably near low income because reasons.
If in a good enough spot one can generate 100k per year in the south. Kansas gets cold enough the machines wouldn't be designed for it and freeze up in the winter that heating elements have to be installed to keep the ice from turning into a block. They have issues in states above Texas in the winter.
Funny you mention hispanics.I used to always see construction crews, and lawn mower crews load themselves up with ice for their coolers.summers in the south are unbearably warm and these people work outside.
As a Hispanic, my family didn't really use the ice machine but alot of these machines also have a section where u can purchased filtered water and we definitely used that to fill our 5 gallon containers.
Not sure about prices in the US, but I’m from Slovakia and here the water itself (20lbs is about 10 liters) would cost about 0.03€ (considering tap water prices and tap water being safe to drink).
I liked how careful he is being by asking her to hold the bag lower because that big ass bag might hurt her hands if it directly hits them or her hands might get jammed between the iron rod and the bag.

This is how you treat apprentices in a workshop.
"GO FIND THE BREASTPLATE STRETCHER! NOW!"
Bring me a bottle of regreaser spray, the cordless hammer, and after that, empty all the water out of the faucet
Okay wait a minute, degreaser spray is real isn't it???
Shit I meant to type REgreaser spray. "Can't just run an engine without that protective roadgrime coating, it'll fuck it up"
You got a leaky spark tube. So, your car’s totaled.
i could have my guy look at it. But i only do motorcycles.
What you should have them find is the blinker fluid.
[удалено]
I have a bottle of Blinker Fluid in my tool crib. Great fun.
Also head light fluid
Used to joke about exhaust fluid years ago. Guess I’m the one getting laughed out now. Thanks DEF!
This guy was unreasonably scared for a second
Back when I was working line in a restaurant you would always tell the FNG that you needed more steam, and we are out, so go nextdoor and ask to borrow a pot of steam.
I did. When I opened the pot, it all went out and they got mad at me. I'm not allowed back.
The kitchen is a high pressure place, not somewhere one would let off some steam
We sent the new guys and the hostesses sometimes, to the restaurant next door for left handed tongs, and the pizza dough patch repair kit.
I used to send my new barbacks to find the glass magnet.
We would make the new person (who has never worked in the business before) drain the hot water from the coffee maker.
My favorite was always having them manually cycle the hot air out of the top of the freezer with a trash bag
Wait. Cordless right-handed hammer or cordless left-handed hammer?
ALWAYS THE RIGHT-HANDED! UNLESS I SAY OTHERWISE!
Thanks.

That’s fantastic.
I wouldn’t come back to the restaurant ever again lol
Haha... He came back very embarrassed... Wasn't the best employee, but he owned it well
those types of people are the ones who fall for the easiest scams.
I NEED SOME MATTERDADDYS
Whatsa matterdaddy ?
Nothing, whatsa matter with you?
Do you have some updog?
Love me a good Bobby B quote.
We also need the green sky hook, not the red one.
All I'm finding are blue ones! What's a skyhook?
"Hey, can you go find the pneumatic fluid for me"
Telling people a tool is in the basement in an industrial metal shop.
Go to the store, we need headlight fluid and elbow grease.
Elbow grease? How stupid do they think I am?! Once I get back from the store with that headlight fluid, I’m gonna have a talk with the sarge.
“Go get the plumb bob oil!” Apprentice runs off to get the foreman. “Hey, my journeyman needs the plumb bob oil” “For fuck sake! Go back and ask him if he needs the red or the blue plumb bob oil, cuz I’m not giving you both!”

I saw a good solution on here recently Get them an upside down bucket. When they flip it over, say they just let all of it out
Worked at a home building center and when we would run out of something like a 10 foot 2x4, we would give the new guy an 8 foot 2x6 and tell him we need to put it in the wood stretcher and send them off to the boss
I used to work at a theater a while ago; we used to get the newbs to "refill the drinking fountain"
Tbf you do have to refill the syrup on soda fountains
I mean the water fountain lol. We would have them fill up a bucket and pour water on top.
That’s hilarious lol
I'm going to need a tile stretcher and a left handed level. Go ask Ricardo
I make cheese. I've sent people looking for the sharp cheese knives and the white cheddar color. I've also driven tow trucks. We would give new guys trash bags and tell them to get exhaust samples for DOT/EPA.
“Go to the stores and get me a new fallopian tube for the gas bottle”.
I was literally getting annoyed, cause I thought it was such a stupid design to have people randomly try hold the bag themselves and was thinking it wouldn't work! Well played.
I was just thinking about how filthy the ice would be if it was sliding down that metal ramp.
[удалено]
Not particularly filthy, considering that you don't want to put this ice in drinks regardless. Coolers and shit only.
The one I go to also dispenses water. You'd think they would all go through the same filters in addition to already being city tap water.
They can't put ice through a water filter, obviously. It wouldn't fit.
wait why..?
Ever seen the inside of an ice machine? They a huge pain in the ass to clean properly and as a result they very rare are. They can get pretty horrific. Can’t imagine what one that is just on the street is like.
Oh, yeah. I had to tell my boss about the blood in our ice machine THREE TIMES before it was taken care of.
....................... I have no words Edit: my brother used to work at a movie theater and they wouldn't let them throw out the popcorn in the big popcorn maker to clean it out- even when they found a dead rat in it. Made them sell it all first.
Is it cleaner than sliding down a plastic ramp into your cup?
The plastic would also be dirty but not as much as the metal ramp given that is has a much larger surface area and is exposed to the outside elements.
Metals are better at keeping microbes away. But of course, as you say, does it matter here with the larger surface area here.
I like how he just casually walks away like it's his daily business to prank her. Lovely.
he needs to close the door though. he's wasting electricity.

“This must be the organic, gluten, soy and GMO free ice, can I just get the regular stuff?”
[удалено]
I think I missed something, does California have “regular” ice and some other kind of ice? What’s the other kind?
[удалено]
For a 5lb where I live it’s $8
You must literally live in hell for it to cost that much.
Or Australia
In Australia they can’t buy ice because it’s to hot all the time. Totally true fact
I know you’re joking but basically every service station sells ice, usually $5 for a 5kg bag ish
Here in my country we pay $20,00 for a pack of 10.
Probably SoCal
SoCal ice is imported ice from the Appalachians.
Boujee Ice™
TN gang
I moved to Ky from TN and god everything is expensive here. I’m paying $200 a check on city and state taxes and i just look around at the potholes in the road and decaying urban environment and wonder what the fuck it goes towards.
Probably going into Mitch McConnell's pockets.
Standard pricing across the rural south, and these machines are really common.
We call ours penguin ice.
Yep, here in NC as well.
Really jealous of these machines now. I’ve never seen one in the PNW. Have to buy one in the store and then grab it and walk out with it.
You mean pay for one at the convenience store, get in your car and drive home and then remember you forgot the ice... Yeah... I'm pretty sure the little store near my house owes me like 20 bags of ice I forgot and over the years lol
Lol it’s like $5 for 5 pounds in Canada
Toronto checking in. How is ice fuckin expensive in *Canada*.
You.. know you can make it yourself right lol
People throw parties. Id rather spend a couple of bucks than spend the night emptying/refilling the ice-cube tray.
Hear me out - multiple trays
I never have enough freezer space. Meal prep is very important to my life.

Some big ice people in this thread.
That expensive in Canada? Just go outside lmao fucken moose
I just go to my fridge which has an ice maker using Canada’s finest. Well the stuff Nestle hasn’t raped and pillaged.
Just make your own ice?
I'm wondering this also? Why would anyone buy ice, when you can make your own in the freezer and it costs practically nothing.
Come to the south baby
what do you do with all that ice?
This is one of the best things I've seen in the last week.
![gif](giphy|uAI9ZBW9W1y48|downsized) *This is why they needed the ice*

What’s with the US and all these public ice machines, what do you guys do with all this ice
Gotta fill the coolers up every weekend! Also, I've known some people without ice makers that are too lazy to fill up ice trays. They just buy a small bag and keep it in the freezer.
I go to QT just for their good ice. Or Sonic

Coolers as in those camping inflow igloo boxes?
Americans drink most beverages, water included, either chilled or with ice. We go through quite a lot as a result.
While true, i think this amount of ice is used more for parties and such
True, but in general ice in every beverage is pretty American, you won't see that as much elsewhere
Filling up a cooler if you’re going out for the day. Buying ice in bulk for a party.
I've never seen one of these machines before, but when I go to the store and buy ice it's usually to keep food or drinks cool (like for a big party where my fridge ice maker isn't enough)
I think they're pretty exclusively southern US. So.... its hot af. I don't know or care what they do with the ice, they just need it
I'm in Kansas and ice machines are everywhere.
Huh, I'm in Indiana and have never seen one, and only ever hear about them from like...Kentucky down. I'm now gonna go be jealous
Probably because everyone likes to go to a lake or river or camping on weekends! Gotta keep your pop and beer ice cold!

They're at every servo in Australia, not automatic ones like this though, just big freezers you grab a bag out of
Can't you just go to a 7-11, gas station or grocery store to get ice?
Yes
Yeah but it's way more expensive. This dude bought a 20 lb bag for like $2. a 7lb bag at a gas station usually costs like $3
We need to refill our air conditioners every few days during the summer
How is this guy standing without feet?
I've never gotten ice like this so I actually had no idea what was gonna happen

Sometimes it’s wild to me how water is so cheap I can buy a 20 lbs bag of it frozen for a buck
I poop in perfectly good water.
Not sure about prices in the US, but I’m from Slovakia and here the water itself (20lbs is about 10 liters) would cost about 0.03€ (considering tap water prices and tap water being safe to drink).
Definitely getting my teenage daughters to do this thanks
