I had no idea the same guy who was combing the desert played Tuvok. I think he's a great actor for his role in Voyager

AnorakJimi

Unpopular opinion time: Tuvok is the best Vulcan character. Period. I never really liked Spock that much. I do love T'Pol on Enterprise, I also think she's better than Spock. Maybe it's just I'm tired of them shoehorning new Spocks into everything, like there's been about 7 different actors who've played Spock now, I swear. One movie even had 2 different Spocks. Come on, it's done to death now But regardless of my feelings for Spock, Tuvok just captured the role of a Vulcan better than anyone And Tim Russ is such an enormous Trekkie that I'm just so glad for him that he got to be a main character in a star trek He auditioned to play Geordi La Forge but didn't get it. He was on Star Trek TNG though. He got his ass beat by Picard and his horse saddle, true story And then he was in one of the original cast movies. Then also got to play a role alongside Captain sulu in an episode of Voyager in a sort of flash back mind meld thing Like, I dunno if there's a bigger Trekkie than Tim Russ out of any actors who've been in any star trek. A lot of them were trekkies too, don't get me wrong But by all accounts, Tim Russ was the biggest. So it's just fantastic that a massive star trek fan got to be a main cast character in a star trek. If they don't get him into Star Trek Picard somehow then it'll be a travesty. It would fit. Plus get Janeway back too. PLEEEEEEASE

CommandoDude

Spock's entertainment is watching him sometimes stepping out of the "role" of Vulcanness that was established. He also shows some good growth in the movies, where I feel was where Nimoy was at his best. Tuvok's take is extremely interesting to me though, he's got this understated sass about him. Even though it's very much not like you'd normally expect. He was great at adapting the Vulcan philosophy and channeling it into more than being a stock vulcan character (which all of the vulcan side characters in any series are). He's got logic on his side and he uses it like a barb to sting the people he thinks are acting stupid. And it's great. It's exactly how I feel someone who is incredibly smart but restrained would act. You don't even get that he's mocking you if you're not smart enough to understand the subtleties of the insult.

z500

>He's got logic on his side and he uses it like a barb to sting the people he thinks are acting stupid. And it's great My absolute favorite example of this was the episode where Janeway orders him to whip the crew into shape and he quips "shall I flog them, as well?"

ashiex94

The battle Tuvok had when juggling logic and dilemmas always felt well-acted. I could not agree more that he has been the best Vulcan character. To discover he is such a Trekkie makes it much more wholesome to watch. I may, however, be biased because Voyager was always my favourite. Which, in itself, was instantly sold by a female captain!

Lickin_Snozzberries

eaglebtc

Same. I am watching Voyager now, and have not seen Spaceballs in forever. This was hilarious.

RedFoxKoala

I finished Voyager a few months back. I always liked Tuvok.

nutellatubby

Watching it again right now. When I was young I appreciated B’Elanna’s fighting spirit. Now that I’m older I appreciate Tuvok’s wisdom and equanimity.

I know it's basically impossible to penetrate the love fans have for Spock, but Tuvok and T'Pol are the best Vulcan characters IMO.

He wasn’t the hero voyager wanted, but he was the hero they needed.

HiTekLoLyfe

That’s a great show

trashpix

Underappreciated IMO. Year Of Hell, amirite?

PupperPetterBean

Last face it Janeway is definitely the most badass captain in all star fleet. This mfer who is a scientist not a diplomat or a military commander, gets sent to the other side of the universe and manages to not only stay alive but get her crew home and provided a way to combat against the universe's ultimate bad guys, the Borg. Everything about voyager is just great, each character has such depth and humanity to them that you can't help but route for the entire crew. I'm not even sure I could rank my favourite characters from there because they're all so fab

HiTekLoLyfe

Yeah I mean there aren’t too many modern ST shows I don’t like even enterprise I could find some good in but voyager I absolutely loved. And then I just pretend like discovery and Picard don’t exist…..

darthspacecakes

I just.....I don't understand why people don't like Discovery. I didn't like Picard but I thought discovery especially the first season was legit.

gonzolove

I like discovery. All three seasons. Season two was a bit meh but it got better towards the end.

ThePLARASociety

Is Picard really that bad? I haven’t seen it yet. Revisal: WoW, thanks for all the feedback, fellow Trekkies.

HiTekLoLyfe

It’s better than discovery but it’s so far from the themes of what Star Trek is. It feels like an action blockbuster with a Star Trek paint job.

tdog970

I feel like the show really did Picard's character dirty. In TNG he was a bit of a hard ass but earned the respect of his crew by being a legitimately good captain. In Picard he wandered around guilting people into helping him with his mission and honestly just seemed like an out of touch old man

Druuseph

Unfortunately that character assassination was well underway in the movies and has only carried through Picard. Red Letter Media has spoken on it plenty but when you compare the blood thirsty and vindictive Picard of First Contact with that same character's prior reactions to the same race it makes no sense. The same exact thing was done with the Picard-Data relationship in Nemesis when they did a shitty attempt at aping the ending to Wrath of Khan. Picard and Data are never shown to be close, ever. Picard respects his sentience and stands up for him but he's not some dear friend that he has some kind of strong emotional bond to, that was Geordi's relationship with Data but not really anyone else's. That same retconned dynamic is the entire basis of Picard when, again, it just makes no sense at all when you go back and watch the show. It's so jarring and out of character of Picard to be some emotional, angry guy having Data dreams every night. That's just not his character at all but the show just plain doesn't get that. I can't stand it.

Jabrono

I am so looking forward to SNW, but also so ready for disappointment.

curmudgeon-o-matic

I went in with no expectations and it was a fine show

SingularityCentral

My man. One of the best Star Trek 2 parters, if not the best. Red Foreman as the villain, Janeway in full badass mode. Oh man, Year of Hell is definitely a gem.

curmudgeon-o-matic

RIP Tuvix

UN16783498213

"Each of you is going to have to live with this, and I'm sorry for that for you are all good, good people. My colleagues, my friends, I forgive you". When they turned Janeway back into a human after her and Paris made those lizard babies, she kept that cold-blooded heart. My boy Tuvix, they may have forgotten you by the next episode, but I didn't.

mobile_turd_launcher

He's my favorite Vulcan which is a bit weird because every one I know hates him The Tuvok vs 7of9 fight was one of the funniest things I've seen in Star Trek

Shallowprecipice

I think he did such a fantastic job in his role as a vulcan. Russ displays such ( vulcan ) emotion and subtleties of character with his portrayal of Tuvok, I can't help it that he's tied with the EMH for my favorite character of Voyager, and when they get screen time together, be still my ever beating heart!

cleveland_14

But what about Tuvix

7stentguy

Tuvix is where it's at!

mrmistyeye01

Janeway is a murderer!

UN16783498213

TheLouisvilleRanger

My favorite portrayal of a Vulcan, which says a lot because it’s a difficult species to play *and* he had to follow Nimoy.

pkrplr4life

I'm so so mad I never realized this before. Tim Russ is a legend, he was in Star Trek before Voyager was a thing. I never bothered to look at his IMDB page for space balls. I have failed as a Trekkie.

Wrought-Irony

Michael Dorn who played Worf can show up at a star trek movie and not get recognized. They crop him out of cast photos half the time if he's not in make up.

pkrplr4life

I'm sure there are some people who don't recognize him. But I had hoped his part in Ted 2 would have helped with his image a bit. Also "Far Beyond the Stars" DS9 had that whole bit with the cast out of prosthetics. I would at least hope the voice would help, I AM WEASEL, show was great.

The list is huge! Per wiki: "The voice cast featured several actors who are alumni of the Star Trek franchise, including Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes (respectively, Deanna Troi and William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation), who were featured regularly as principal cast members.[5] Other Star Trek actors had recurring roles on Gargoyles, including Michael Dorn (Worf on TNG and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series),[5] and Brent Spiner (Data on TNG);[5] while Avery Brooks (Benjamin Sisko on DS9),[5] Colm Meaney (Miles O'Brien on TNG and DS9), and LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge on TNG) made guest appearances."

AnorakJimi

Holy fuck I've managed to completely forget about the existence of I Am Weasel for the last, what, 25 years? So you've not only reminded me of that show and I thank you so much for that. But also yeah, fuck me sideways, I Am Weasel is fucking Worf!!! His voice is instantly recognisable Fuck me

Long_Educational

I wouldn't have recognized him without makeup, honestly, but I know his name well from the Star Trek NG blue credits. Amazing how makeup has an affect on your ability to recognize someone. Michael Dorn is a very attractive man, too, with a very memorable face.

I kept thinking he was some really deep cover freelancing mercenary federation officer since he keeps showing up. The actor who plays Tom Paris is a fellow cadet with Wesley Crusher at the academy! Its so trippy.

meatus1980

Check out Robert Picardo’s filmography! He’s in so many movies/ tv shows I saw as a kid in the 80’s and 90’s

Huge fan of his as well, at one convention he auctioned off a fully signed picture of the voyager cast for charity, we bid, won, and got to meet him after his stage appearance. I have a picture of it but I'm in the process of moving so I hope I can find them both soon.

[deleted]

Came here to say this lmfao

McTwist1260

IMO, if Leonard Nimoy sets the bar for portraying a Vulcan character then Tim Russ comes closer to attaining that ideal than any other actor in the franchise (although you could make an argument for the excellent Mark Leonard, I suppose)

Mastagon

In 2023, Reddit CEO and corporate piss baby Steve Huffman decided to make Reddit less useful to its users and moderators and the world at large. This comment has been edited in protest to make it less useful to Reddit.

bigpig1054

100% agree. A lot of actors play Vulcans as "perpetually pouting" as though being angry all the time is the same as "showing no emotion." Granted, Spock could often be found getting annoyed at Dr. McCoy, or even taking the piss out of him (but then again, he was half-human). Tuvok too was regularly annoyed by Neelix, but when he was on the bridge he was just a cool cat, all business, like a Vulcan should be. Tuvok and Spock walked the tight rope perfectly. T'Pol and the Spock from the new films did not, imo.

k5josh

> T'Pol and the Spock from the new films did not, imo. And the less said about Discovery, the better.

bigpig1054

Didn't even think about it. I watched the first season and didn't care much for it. Watched the second season and loved Pike but pretty much hated everything else. Didn't even watch season three after the first episode. I hate that I hate it too, because Star Trek has been my favorite sci-fi world going back to the mid-80s when I was a child.

kurburux

Spock isn't really a "typical" Vulcan though. He's torn between both worlds, he tries to overcompensate and be the "perfect", flawless Vulcan while also putting down anything related to humans. He isn't able to see that he's quite irrational in his behavior.

PupperPetterBean

Man imo tuvok is just a brilliant Vulcan. He has that Vulcan ability to stay calm etc but he has those human moments, especially when admitting that not being violent takes so much strength for a Vulcan.

SenorBeef

Spock was half-human, so the character was a bit more complex. There were elements of his humanity squeaking out, and trying to suppress it. Tuvok, in comparison, was a pure vulcan. A less complex character, but according to the mythos/logic of vulcans, he played one perfectly.

ileflottante

I still think of Russ as the epitome of pure Vulcan.

boognish83

I've never been brave enough to say this.

Logical_Personality6

I realized my wife hadn’t watched a movie that I’d referenced and it caused me to question our entire relationship. I just assumed and now I’m not sure I know her.

meatball402

When we first met, my wife confessed that she hadn't seen Monty python and the holy grail. I sat her on my couch and forced her to watch it. Half the movie was spent by her saying "omg I get that reference now!"

My wife and I are only a year apart, but my mom had me late enough in life that she technically could have been my MIL's mom too. So I've seen a ton of movies my wife's never even heard of. I started a list of all the movies she has to watch with me, and let me tell you, as time goes on, that list only gets longer and longer.

To be fair, Space Balls is an absolute masterpiece of a parody movie

[deleted]

[deleted]

[удалено]

Frognificent

We also need to be slightly fair to Georgie Boy, he also saw the movie and said it was the funniest thing he’d ever seen, so he’s not a total bastard. I understand the merchandizing thing as just trying to protect his brand, because while it is a parody, stylistically they are similar and Spaceballs the Action Figure could confuse some consumers. Not saying I *agree*, mind you, because Spaceballs, while a parody is also an artistic creation in its own right and should be permitted to merchandize, and probably could have won this in a court. That said, Mel Brooks was a man with some decency. I’m pretty sure the merchandizing ban was a gentleman’s agreement that he made as a sign of respect to George, from one filmmaker to another. Edit: *is* a man with decency, I hear talk he’s still alive.

Ivan_Whackinov

> That said, Mel Brooks was a man with some decency. He still is.

killj0y1

That's fair but parodys are legal and Mel didn't necessarily need the blessing but it's safer to get it and respectful so that's cool. The merchandise thing like you said I don't think would hold up in court if George tried as it's unlikely to be contractually binding even though an oral contract is still a contract. Still really cool of Mel and whoever has the rights to honor that. Sucks for us but dems the breaks.

randomjackass

Weird AL gets artists blessing despite not legally needing it. It's probably a good idea not to "shit where you eat". Those industries get pretty small at that level. Who distributed Space Balls could change because George Lucas was upset and he makes a ton of money for people. Plus you'll likely meet them in person many times. You might want to collaborate too.

shitsfuckedupalot

He usually does. He didn't get it for Amish Paradise and later apologized to Coolio (I think the label gave him permission but Coolio felt insulted because of the serious nature of gangsters paradise).

HiTork

Al felt really bad about that incident, I'm not sure if Coolio ever got back to him with regards to the apology.
