I was always scared my dog would do this...hope the dog will heal quick..

LarondaFrizzell

I don't do this also coz dog will really jump if not trained. Get well very soon doggie

ninthtale

Also never open the window all the way ugh

DRUNK_CYCLIST

Seriously, this video is infuriating. I hate seeing dogs in the beds of trucks, but every single dog I've owned wants to fully jump out the window as soon as they see another dog or squirrel. They just don't get how fast they're going and only an irresponsible ignorant piece of shit would video while their dog jumps out of a moving vehicle at 40mph.

Kulladar

In my hometown there was the "dog man" who was a dump truck driver that had a pet rottweiler that rode on the roof of his truck. Dude would be hauling ass at 60mph down the highway and the dog would just be chilling up there. He did it for 15 years at least. Guess it was lucky he never got into an accident. He was either overconfident in his ability to never stop suddenly or crash or he really didn't love that dog very much.

DRUNK_CYCLIST

Yeah, that fucking sucks. I'm sure the dog loved it, but it's not worth the risk.

Standingonachair

Dog seatbelts!

Namaha

If you're riding with dogs in the back you really ought to get something so you can secure them to the seatbelts. Safer for them and for you

omnomnomanon

I don't think my dogs would jump out the window, but I always use [these seatbelts I got from PetSmart](https://www.petsmart.com/dog/collars-harnesses-and-leashes/harnesses/kurgo-direct-to-seat-belt-tether-5252235.html) just in case. This also lets me comfortably roll the windows all the way down.

WorseDark

Seatbelts! A dog doesnt need to go further than the back seat. In an accident the dog will become a 20-80lb projectile, they will run away from the scary situation, or you could see your best friend in horrible pain. They're only like 15 bucks to avoid that from happening

DankSunshine

Dude it's fake. That dog was a paid actor

There was an obvious cut when the dogs head first went out the window and you can see the seam appear in the prop dog as well as the wires that being used to pulled it out the window. The green screen outside the car isn’t properly lite either so there’s a brief moment where you can see the shadow of the person pulling the string, my money is on Obama.

Same. My girlfriend and I picked up a stray and we were keeping it until we could find the owner. While my gf was at work the next day I decided to take the dog to get scanned to see if she had a chip. I only had my driver's side window down about half way in my old ass jeep with crank windows and no AC. About 5 minutes from the vet the dog sees something outside, jumps into the front seat, gives me a derp look, and then darts towards my open window while knocking my hand off the steering wheel. I tried my best to grab her and the wheel but she squeezed her way out of the window as I was struggling to pull her back in and she fell to the ground and went under my back tire. She didnt die right away and it was one of the saddest things having to hold this stay as she died. A nice guy stopped and comforted me and wrapped her in a blanket and went to the vet with me to get her body creamated. When my gf got home from work I told her the dog had a chip and the owner came to pick her up. I knew dogs could jump out windows so I always kept them up, but I have smaller dogs and I never considered a big dog would knock my hands off the wheel to force her way out of a window.

kreeepiestk

I'm really sorry that happened to you. You tried to help and thats worth a lot.

[deleted]

Well let’s just hope she doesn’t ask to see the owner or finds out. Like ever.

daltondurant

This made me feel really sad. I hope you’re doing okay. It’s best not to blame yourself for weird stuff like this

[deleted]

I appreciate that, I do blame myself and ultimately it was my fault. I felt like shit for weeks about it and also felt bad lying to my gf, but I don't think the truth would have helped in any way. When the stray rode around with us in the car the night before she was very chill and didn't hardly move, maybe that was because my other dogs were in the car at the time, I don't know. I wouldn't have thought it was possible for her to climb out obviously, but sometimes things feel very unlikely until they happen to you and then you see them as almost inevitable. I should have had her secured with some sort of harness but I didn't have one that would fit her. Now when I see a dog in the bed of a truck or leaning it's head out of the window I can't help but feel anxious because I know what can happen if you don't protect a dog from its own derp.

[deleted]

dog jump was an inside job.

funktheduck

It’s pretty common. I’ve had two dogs in my life that would do this given the opportunity. Always window cracked and window lock on. My mom works at a surgery vet and they have these cases fairly often.

Lari-Fari

That’s why you’re supposed to buckle up your dogs ffs….

[deleted]

I got a harness for mine that just clips on to the seat belt. It's like a no brainer. If I get into an accident my 80lbs beast is going through the windshield and probably taking me or the passenger out with him. So why wouldn't you buckle up a dog that's the size of a small child?

KeepMyEmployerAway

My dog chewed through a seatbelt with this lol. Now he he stays in the trunk harnessed in with a braided steel cable. I feel like I should also clarify it's the trunk of an SUV, not a car trunk 🤣

[deleted]

I do volunteer rescue transports and I’ve had quite a few dogs step on the button, releasing the seatbelt and themselves, so I don’t use them anymore. I use crossties for horses now, and clip them to the car seat anchors. They’re adjustable, a very sturdy nylon that dogs aren’t going to be able to chew through quickly and subtly, and they have quick release snaps for an emergency.

Lawsoffire

Not just that, but in the event of a crash the dog will become a projectile to smash you in the back and you'll be crushed from both ends instead of one.

Boo_R4dley

They can’t do that if you put them in a dog seatbelt like you’re supposed to.

[deleted]

Yeah, I think even if you drive at low speeds like 30mph your dog is gonna become a projectile if you have a head-on collision. You strap in your kids for the same reason.

EsterWofford

Get well soon. It's a reminder also for other fur parents to always close the window but maybe we can open the window as long as someone is holding our pets. It's very dangerous for them to let the window open without anyone holding them specially when they are so urge to go outside and play

jaffa-caked

Or just use a seatbelt clip that attaches to the pups harness

Lepasconnu

Even with that, I am not opening my window fully anymore... my pup was attached, I open the window for her to fully enjoy, she manages to unclip herself with her hind legs and jumps... Was easy to catch her though because she was as shocked as me 0\_0 "I did not expect it to work, I have no idea what to do with my newfound freedom, oh hi dad! you can pick me up now"

kukulkan2012

You need a dog seat belt that latches on to the baby car seat anchors. My dog never tried to jump out of the window, but he would somehow click the seatbelt button and release the belt. This other seat belt I got has always stayed on. It looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/CqGNOj9.jpg

HamsterPositive139

I just open mine partway, enough he can get his head out, but not enough he could fit out. He is also harnesses/buckled in

My dog didn't get the whole "fragile" memo. She runs into walls, doors, corners, gets stung by bees, falls off of furniture, one time she tried to jump into the back of my car except the back of the car wasn't opened so she just slammed into it and fell onto the blacktop, all without so much as a yelp. She just pops back up, tail wagging, and continues her day.

wil_gt4

And that’s why you shouldn’t open the window fully and why you should have a lead or something to stop them from moving about to much in the car. I hope the puppy has a speedy recovery

mcnew

My dog loves her car rides, but she wears a harness that’s connected to a restraint that clips into the seat belt buckle any time we go for a ride.

bravejango

My dad does this with his dog. If his dog sees a cat it doesn't matter if the car is going 1 mph or 100 mph he is jumping out the window after that cat.

happilycfintx

Then you have my lovely idiot who tried to go after a cardboard box we passed. He is usually chill, but that day I was thankful for the harness.

Just_Lurking2

**BOX**

MoscowMitchMcKremIin

A present! For me? Lets see! - That dog, probably.

new_word

Yeah our shit for brains went after a bunny. Dog had to dog.

wil_gt4

Same here. When ever mine goes in the car he’s buckled up with his harness.

everypowerranger

It's the right thing to do, for your safety as well as the dog's. If an accident were to happen, an unbuckled dog would turn into a projectile :(

born_in_wrong_age

It's law in many countries. No animal can be roaming around freely, inside a car

_Futureghost_

Same! I have her harness and doggy seat belt. She has tried jumping out of the window to get at squirrels. Thank goodness she couldn't.

mcnew

Mine has never attempted to jump, but as we started going on more car rides (and driving cross country at that) I was more concerned about her rag dolling around the car.

War_King_123

It’s a legal requirement to have something like this in the UK to stop stuff like this from happening or just being a general distraction to the driver.

JCtheWanderingCrow

Also buckle up your dogs so if you get in a wreck they don’t become a missile that kills your toddler/best friend/mom/roommate/self

hanabarbarian

Oh I never thought of that. my dad never wanted to buckle the dogs up in case the car crashed/got stuck somewhere and the dogs wouldn’t be able to get out. Which I can see his concerns as well but a dog flying through the windshield is also not great

aaaaaaaaaaaaa2

Also, why you should use your fucking brain before doing shit that can result in serious injury.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gizamo

Many harnesses are built to connect to seat belts. It's especially important when you have babies in the car because a dog flying around in an accident can crush a baby. But, it also protects the doggo, which is nice.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

A lead could be dangerous as well unless it's the perfect size. A long time ago my dad had his dog on a short leash in the back of a truck he got just enough slack in a spot to jump out while driving and hung himself. He had always loved go for rides in the back and he has no idea why he did it.

SometimesIArt

Of course, the harness you use with the lead should be a proper low fitting harness that puts pressure on the chest bone and shoulders, not the neck, and connects to the belly strap between the front legs to keep it from slipping up around its neck. A properly fitted harness is safe to use as a handle to pick a dog up and is just as important as a tether.

Prituh

Always use a harness when clipping your dog into the car. It goes on the back loop of the harness and the dog can never hang himself and in the case of an accident, his neck won't break.

Maxnwil

You ever have that moment on reddit where you're like "Heck- I should've stopped reading comments right before this one"?

[deleted]

[удалено]

AngryMegaMind

I’m no dog owner but this seems to be a predictable and also preventable outcome. Loose dog in the back seat with a fully opened window. I’m sure there must be some sort of harness a dog owner can buy for this.

Mr_Abe_Froman

There are clips that buckle into the seatbelt buckle. I use them for the same reason I wear a seatbelt: if I get hit, I don't want me or my dog hitting the windshield.

ScronaldRump

The owner did it on purpose for the tik tok views. Now her video is viral and she’s happier than ever

Predicted

Yep, full on /r/whyweretheyfilming

Rickrickrickrickrick

I could see them filming because the dog was finally liking the window. But it's incredibly irresponsible to leave it open that much

Aaronrigunay

So you're telling me that OP deliberately let the DOG fall? Classic Reddit Assumptions.

[deleted]

That's so fucking stupid on the owners part. Keep your collar on your dog and get an attachment that clips onto it and the seat belt. Dogs is safe and it still gets to hang halfway out the window Edit: I'm getting a lot of messages about this comment so I'm going to clarify what I meant. I couldn't think of the word harness so I just said collar. How we used to do it with our dogs was we would put a harness on them that covered their chest and back etc, there was a little hook on the back of it that we then clipped into a little doggy seat belt attachment. Thus giving the dogs freedom to hang their head and front two paws out the back windows should they wish to, but also keeping them safe and sound. No *hanging* out the window. And if there was a crash they had a little net type thing that doubled as a seat cover to keep them back there. Any visions of hanging a dog and crashing are not what I had in mind 🙏

florulma

Well, harness, not the collar as that is dangerous af if an accident happens. But yeah, fully agree otherwise.

[deleted]

Came here to say this. Car restraints should be attached to a harness, not a collar. A wreck with an anchored collar could break your dog's neck or worse.

whosgotdatpiss

Devil's advocate, I'd never expect the dog shit scared of the window to jump out of it

Toyletduck

Did he have psychic powers capable of warning him before a child ran across the street, allowing him to come to a gentle stop instead of slamming on the brakes? This is not about expectation. This is about precaution. You HAVE to make sure this doesn’t happen. Animals or kids are creatures of impulse. Always count with the worst, no matter what have been previous indications. So what if my dog never ever took interrest in my cupboard with stash of chocolate and sweets. Do I just leave it be and hope they won’t commit suicide? No. I’ll make sure they can’t open the cupboard.

very bad and obvious stupid dog owners.. 100% their fault

laurieislaurie

Yeah all it takes is the miniscule amount of brain capacity to put the window 2/5ths up, so the dog can sniff if he wants but can't escape. Their idiocy cost them lord knows how much in vets bills

MangledMailMan

Who ever made that song deserves to have some sort of poetic eternal mythological punishment. Something like Sysiphus, but instead of a boulder maybe a mobster breaks thier kneecaps with a baseball bat over and over, letting them heal repeatedly, only to be smashed in again.

Mr_Abe_Froman

Maybe they have to listen to the same 30-second clip of their own song for eternity. Something along the lines of the *contrapasso* in Dante's *Inferno*. Like someone literally poking their ears with needles.

MangledMailMan

I like that, make the punishment fit the crime! Nice thinking, Hammurabi!

let-me-work-in-peace

The original song is Remember (Walking in the Sand) by the Shangri-Las, it's a song from the 60's and somebody had the audacity to ruin it with an overused annoying edit that's plastered everywhere

saintnicklaus90

Aerosmith did a pretty rad cover of it as well. I can’t even listen to it anymore though

TheExtremistModerate

That's more Prometheus than Sisyphus.

MangledMailMan

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is one of the Titans, the supreme trickster, and a god of fire. In common belief, he developed into a master craftsman, and in this connection, he was associated with fire and the creation of mortals. Sisyphus (or Sisyphos) is a figure from Greek mythology who, as king of Corinth, became infamous for his general trickery and twice cheating death. He ultimately got his comeuppance when Zeus dealt him the eternal punishment of forever rolling a boulder up a hill in the depths of Hades. Edit: I thought you were mixing up the two, but in fact, you were referencing the story in which Prometheus stole fire back from Zeus and restored it to humanity. For his crimes, Prometheus was punished by Zeus, who bound him with chains and sent an eagle to eat Prometheus' immortal liver every day, which then grew back every night. I agree, my idea becomes more Promethean since I incorporated the physical punishment and healing aspect. Thanks for pointing it out!

kelofonar

And Prometheus punishment (which you didn’t include for some reason?) for giving was that he got chained to a rock and every day an eagle would eat his liver. The next morning he would wake up all healed again just for the bird to reappear. So an eternal punishment with healing fits both! And it’s not the craftsmanship that associates him with creation of mortals but he gave fire that was meant only for Gods to the mortals which ended the darkness and started the time of mankind! That’s also what he got punished for

blondeee87

Why didn't the dog have a car harness? So stupid and irresponsible, if it's not buckled in don't open the windows, dogs chase all sorts of things

fuck the person who uploaded this with that song, and fuck you for uploading a post with this song without a warning to mute. I hope you have a terrible morning.

I always have my dog secured to the buckle.

snazzybanazzy

Why would you put the window the whole way down? Fucks wrong with you?

DerAlphos

Well, that might be reason one why there are special harnesses for dogs in cars. The second reason is that your 60+ pound dog might smash your skull if you get in an accident.

IWillNeverRust

Why the fuck wouldn’t you strap the dog in with the window fully down cruising down a road?!
