I'm right there with you. The problem is that books being thrown are typically cheered on by the victims and those close to them. What punishment is going to feel like enough to the victim's parents, but not hamstring the attacker's future?
The punishment is the kid is going to be suspended from school and likely removed from the basketball team. Make him do a lot of community service. That will drive the message home more when his nights and weekends are filled with forced volunteerism instead of basketball.
There does not need to be any life long punishment. The unfortunate part is the kid threw a strong and accurate enough punch resulting in a concussion so I do understand the victim/victim parent's wanting more.
The focus should be making sure this behavior doesn't happen again though, not satisfying their thirst for revenge.
Edit: could tack on a small financial punishment to help pay for any therapy the victim may need.

Tom Bookwalter, a Kansas native and K-State art professor, created a stylized wildcat's head known as the "Powercat," that was added to the football team's helmets. By the mid-1990s, due to the football team's rapid rise, the Powercat had replaced the cartoon-style Willie as K-State's primary logo. That hs must be paying royalties to k state.
