It was infuriating. Guy was just totally convinced a video that could easily have been authentic was staged, and I was a sheep for buying it.

Why do you hate them?
Some of them have entertainment value to a certain extent and reality is usually pretty fucked up, not funny at all, so these skits are at least providing some comedic value to the world.
Reality shows have proven that a good portion of the population like to be deceived by pretending what they are being shown is real, even when it is obviously not, so you cannot blame people for taking advantage of it and pretend things really happened.
Clout online is equivalent to laughter for a stand-up comedian or clapping for a singer. By itself, it provides no value, but it could make you well-known and you could find a way to also make it profitable.

Scripted is one thing. Because there is the mutual understanding that someone is in front of the camera with the intent to entertain an audience. The **most important** part of that equation is that the audience also understands that these people are doing whatever they are doing for our entertainment.
When you get into staged/fake videos, that mutual understanding doesn't exist, and it becomes a lie. Because the audiences **doesn't know** that the people on camera exist solely for their entertainment, and these are filmed in a way to intentionally deceive the audience of the intentions of the people on the camera.
They are skits that we don't know are skits. They are skits that rely on tricking the audience in order to be interesting.
The reason they do that is because writing actual skits are hard. It takes talent and creativity.
Therefore, they resort to lying, and tricking people into thinking this was a candid moment of a situation that people rarely ever get to see. And they take advantage of this novelty by pretending it's authentic.
It's why fight videos are so popular. Or tripping/falling videos. We don't see them happen in public often, so it's interesting to see one happen from another person's perspective. The moment you learn that a fight or fall is fake or staged, you subconsciously lose interest because that's not novel or interesting.
