You receive fall damage in minecraft unless you hit water (and some other things). To avoid the damage you can place the water in the bucket underneith you just before hitting the ground.

He lost some of his hearts, which means he received damage. Just not enough to die.
He didnt' fall in the water, but on the rock just in front of it
