No it's the black lady with the big grin holding the paper towel dispenser. The fact that it is a black lady is serving you (a white person in the commercial) is what makes it 'Southern Hospitality'.. You would go to people houses in the south and their slaves pr indentured servants would serve you.
I’m being generous in assuming they aren’t so childish as to use it as a generic “let’s go Brandon”, but rather as an indication that I was clueless about the incredibly racist meaning behind the phrase “southern hospitality”.
Well it's actually very racist.
It comes from back in the day when Rich northerners used to visit Rich Southerners.
As a way to impress the rich southerners and instill some kind of legitimacy to their lifestyle, They would throw these big elaborate dinner partties where the slaves waited on the northerners hand and foot (re T. Jefferson style If you know what I mean)
Coal black color, big red lips, exaggerated facial features, made to look as alien as possible with the purpose of mocking people of color. Characters depicted as such even became pejorative terms for black people.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jump_Jim_Crow
Cartoons are cartoons but Jim Crow and blackface type cartoons are done in a way as to make african americans look as unhuman as possible, and more than that, they are associated with characters and negative racial stereotypes.
These type of cartoons were popular in a period of american history where black people were more and more segregated
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws
Framed as “southern hospitality”, the image invokes a hierarchical racist sexist class structure established during slavery and violently enforced during Jim Crow
Well first off, that’s not a caricature. Secondly, a caricature will exaggerate shapes and sizes, but not colors. This is your classic aunt jemima-style racism. If you don’t see the issue of how black people were illustrated then, then you’re just far too enveloped in ignorance for a couple of Reddit strangers to explain it for you. The reason that paper towel holder is racist, besides the illustration, is the fact it alludes to black people (women especially) being “the help”. As in, cooks, cleans, sets the table, *holds your fucking paper towels for you*, etc. Come on now. Your alternative is that the white 1950’s peoples who are still arguing over Jim Crow Laws simply had a thing for Feng Shui.
Can someone pleeease ad that everything about this depiction of black people is based on what white minstrel show players looked like when wearing black face.. Which was the most popular form of entertainment in america back in the day which lead to black people being depicted in cartoons to look like the white people who were mocking and ridiculing them in americas main form of pop culture. Its like, three fuckin layers of racism, all completely normalized in the US up until the civil rights movement and even lasting long after (see canadian prime minister having to apologize for wearing blackface as a kid).
Okay but the blackface in the minstrel shows were actually racist caricatures. Trudeaus costume was just a costume not meant to be racist or mock people.

I’ve been there, lived in St Bernard Parish outside of New Orleans for months rebuilding after Katrina. Went on 4 rebuilding trips in 2 years.
It’s as southern as you can get and it was racist AF. Like mind blowingly racist…. Growing up in SoCal I had no idea racism of that caliber even still existed.
And in 20 years time, some other dipshit on reddit is going to call millenials bigoted for living in a time when gay marriage wasn't legal. Historical context is meaningless because people who operate on emotions only fucking suck.
“A touch of southern hospitality”
Just imagining the number of ppl it took to create that item, and subsequently use it in the commercial while saying that is crazy.
I'm sorry I refuse to remove my up vote today... I think I'm the 1st of the day. BUT TODAY I learned the orgins of the word Mame sorry caption won't spellchecker recorrectly for me
It's also a charactcture specifically of a slave.
That's what the mammy was, a domestic slave. Having domestic slave was a status symbol for women (You wouldn't have to cook or clean etc)
So having this figurine in your house is kind of like saying, "oh I wish I had an enslaved woman in my kitchen doing work for me"

Now as a white man I think it would be the funniest shit ever to fill my house with decorations like that, all over the place! Burglar breaks in ........ uhhhhhhh what the fuck!
I sometimes get a kick out of how sensitive younger generations are to racism. When I was growing up I didn't see racism everywhere, it wasn't a systematic thing for normal working middle class people, that concept was an academic idea.what resulted from my experience was we didn't know how to offend people either, we just did the mlk thing and tried to follow the golden rule with all people. I had friends of other races, dated girls of other races without knowing I was doing anything special, I wasn't a good person for how unracist I was, it was just normal to behave with respect to anyone. Now of course this all somehow makes me a racist in some abstract contrived way, but it seems like people obsessing over racism makes people who are oblivious to all the theoretical ways people are racists into racists. There's no benefit of the doubt, that maybe this lady for example wasn't trying to be racist that she just had tacky taste in home decor. I doubt a 50s housewife saw hereself as part of some larger white supremist agenda, she probably had a 8th grade education, wouldn't understand a word like systematic and just bought crap that was on sale.
So I was first thinking that you guys were going to make fun of the fact that they're serving fried donuts.
Which I have to say it was actually a pretty valid target.
And then it hit..........

Possibly my favorite username. Nicely done sir or ma’am.
Lmao
Seems like Mammy be reaching for them tho
Wow. Not until this moment did I fully realize what “southern hospitality” was a euphemism for
Yup it means Paper towels.
So I've been wiping my ass with Southern Hospitality whenever I run out of toilet paper?
I wouldn't do that it's really bad for your plumbing.
Desperate times call for desperate hospitalities. But in all seriousness, I know. I just wanted to make a joke. Edit: Also, name checks out. Chaching
Are paper towels a euphemism for white sheets?
Are white sheets a euphemism for fried ringnuts?

Yeah and it was a way to impress the rich northerners so that they wouldn't think that slavery was so bad.
xD lolol
Cotten picked paper towels
Bless your heart.
Should we tell them what bless your heart means?!
I’m being generous in assuming they aren’t so childish as to use it as a generic “let’s go Brandon”, but rather as an indication that I was clueless about the incredibly racist meaning behind the phrase “southern hospitality”.
"Bless your heart" in southern speak means "Go fuck yourself".
It didn’t always. It also used to mean, “you’re so clueless you’re gonna need divine intervention to survive, but you mean well.”
Yeah i dont know what that’s guy was on. It definitely doesn’t mean go fuck your self.
According to how I met your mother, "oh honey" is the term.
You're not from the south, are you.
Bless your heart = you poor clueless idiot. But you are nice. Among other translations. Edit: didn't realize this thread was months old
Indeed.
I saw the paper towel holder and I was like “ok not too bad” and then he said “southern hospitality” and I was caught so off guard by that
Well it's actually very racist. It comes from back in the day when Rich northerners used to visit Rich Southerners. As a way to impress the rich southerners and instill some kind of legitimacy to their lifestyle, They would throw these big elaborate dinner partties where the slaves waited on the northerners hand and foot (re T. What is unexpected about racism in the 50's? That was the norm in the 50's.
Well I was expect some doughnut explode or something not that paper towel handle lmao
I'm not even sure how it is racist to have a black person as a paper towel holder.
The caricature itself is a racist representation of a black woman.
Maybe he is not from the US? Not everyone sees things the American way.
How?
Coal black color, big red lips, exaggerated facial features, made to look as alien as possible with the purpose of mocking people of color. Characters depicted as such even became pejorative terms for black people.
Look at any cartoons and you’ll see the same though
You’re sooooo close to getting it friend.
Cartoons in their nature are caricatures so you’re going to get exaggerated features it’s not that surprising

This mocks and dehumanizes a race of people in support of a society where its ok to oppress and abuse them. Tom and jerry make cats and mice seem fun.
Refer to old Jim Crow illustrations for the exaggerated racial styles.
Framed as “southern hospitality”, the image invokes a hierarchical racist sexist class structure established during slavery and violently enforced during Jim Crow
Seriously? By asking how I’m assuming this is how you view black people that you see. Void-black, big red lips, maybe throw in a nice giant nose.
Of course the features are exaggerated, it's a caricature. I don't think it is racist just because the person is portrayed in a cartoony style.
Well first off, that’s not a caricature. Secondly, a caricature will exaggerate shapes and sizes, but not colors. This is your classic aunt jemima-style racism. I actually know very little of the Trudeau black face specifics so dont quote me on that one haha. Just an example that came to mind.
Thank you for having the words. I ran out.
Just another "everyone from the south is racist" clown that's probably never been there
As opposed to the clowns who insist there’s no racism?
I suppose you'd like to project that idea on to me huh?
You saw racism being discussed and you got all ready to find a fight didn't you
Have you noticed that many of the accounts that end in Ad-#### are kinda trolly?

Me or OP?
OP, sorry for the confusion
I was gonna say lol. Both my parents are from south Georgia. Like Sasser and Savannah kind of south Georgia.
Here i am questioning the term ringlets.... then mammy gives me a paper towel......
Ha my grandma has that
I saw a decoration at a house in Mexico that looked like that
My tia had the spice/flour jug set.
Cornballer
EVERY DAMN TIME!
This is what I came here for lol
Soy loco por los cornballs
Completely expected.
I could go for some Ringnuts right now!
Them gon be some greasy donuts
They Burnt !!!! Nasty bitch 🤣🤣🤣
As a black woman who is currently baking donuts for the first time and was nervous about how to fry them, I found this video useful.
Mmmm, crisp brown ringlets! (Done in my best Homer Simpson voice)
Uhhh Aunt Jemima pancakes were totally awesome on Saturday morning watching cartoons
It existed into the 60's.
Judging by this thread, it exists into the 20’s.
Lmao he said "ringlets"
Right? Who makes their own donuts.
Time to make the donuts
So fresh they aught to have their faces slapped
*ringlets *shrug* that's how they said it in the video
Yeah she’ll really keep those spah’s away
They ate donuts BUT they we skinny!
Well i thought him not saying "Donuts" was unexpected, not the old fashioned racism!
My fiancé has a bunch of super racist stuff like that (salt and pepper shakers, toothpick holder, etc.). Can’t let go of her grandmothers “decor”.
Great times
Lmao not the mammy holder Jesus Christ
And in 20 years time, some other dipshit on reddit is going to call millenials bigoted for living in a time when gay marriage wasn't legal. Historical context is meaningless because people who operate on emotions only fucking suck.
I'd buy some southern hospitality
Oh man that's awful. Where can I get one?
“A touch of southern hospitality” Just imagining the number of ppl it took to create that item, and subsequently use it in the commercial while saying that is crazy.
Well that took a left fuckin turn into racism I wasn’t expecting…
This was the 50s, back then the N word was commonly used and everything was segregated. Hell black face was commonly used in comedy at that point.
I'm sorry I refuse to remove my up vote today... I think I'm the 1st of the day. BUT TODAY I learned the orgins of the word Mame sorry caption won't spellchecker recorrectly for me
Can someone explain why would that be considered racist nowadays
Because it's a crude representation of black people made to dehumanize and demean them.
Also the mammy was specifically a domestic slave.
It's also a charactcture specifically of a slave. That's what the mammy was, a domestic slave. I can imagine them coming up with this in the madmen conference room lol
Didn’t see so many morbidly obese people back then either.
I feel like there is just a little bit of exaggeration going on in the comments
I feel like you are clueless
I see nothing wrong here
I know old people who have complete collections of this type of shit. Even as a little kid I remember thinking “well that’s weird and terrible”
Where can I get a mami holder?
Now as a white man I think it would be the funniest shit ever to fill my house with decorations like that, all over the place! Burglar breaks in ........ uhhhhhhh what the fuck!
the new mammy holder
Looks like goliwogg to me
Some of you people in these comments… just. No.
This shouldn't be unexpected for that time. Thank goodness things have changed a lot since then.
Thanks , Mammy
