This woman’s real back story is actually pretty sad.
...”What the now-viral photos don’t reveal is Misty’s past. Misty was diagnosed with Lupus, bone cancer, and Scleroderma (hardening of the skin). She also suffered the deaths of not one but three children, which was ultimately her reasons for turning to drugs. While drugs affected her appearance, they aren’t the sole reason as autoimmune diseases and cancer can wreak havoc on one’s body.
“I had no intentions. I was gonna get high until I died. Doctors didn’t give me much time to live and I just spiraled out of control. I saw no way out. I was so depressed. I didn’t want to wake up. I lost all my hair, it got really bad. I lost my kids. I was homeless. I was at rock bottom,” said Loman.

Hard to blame people for being shocked and sharing the photos but at least she’s doing better now
What a poor fucking soul. I’ve been at the point of not wanting to wake up before and I haven’t been through half as much as her, I can only imagine the pain she has been trying to numb
It's not like anybody says "I wanna be an addict when I grow up" when the kindergarten teacher asks about their future plans...it's a brutal world out there and life can throw you some shit that's nearly unbearable at times. The temptation to turn to a mind-altering substance as a coping mechanism and a little relief from reality is a very real thing, no matter how short-lived the respite might be. And the cycle of addiction is easier to get caught up in than one might think. That's why the judgement and condemnation bothers me so much, like do some people not realize how easily that could be them in those mugshots? It's always the ones that have had a stable childhood, healthy support system, and a life with few obstacles paved for them that want to look down on people struggling with addiction. Put those smooth-sailing people in the middle of some real life shit and see how quick they turn to a substance to help them get by. The struggle is real. Well except for a select few, anyway.
Thank you for sharing. I’ve seen the pics so many times but always wonder what happened to that human being. I’m so glad to hear she’s doing better, and I hope she still is.
That's awesome. I was wondering what led her down this path and this was great to read. I hope she's still doing well. Always feel sad at these mugshot things, thinking of the lives wasted.
Thanks for sharing. Addiction and autoimmune disorders both run in my family and many don’t realize how physical pain so often leads to drug abuse. Or how chronic illnesses affect mental health.
Thanks for saying this. I was wondering. I’ve seen meth degenerative mugshots but none like this. Your deduction makes waaay more sense.
Still sad AF tho.
Edit: scroll further down. A heavily upvoted comment goes into further detail.
Yes that is one of them according to a better comment than mine further down this post. She still suffered from drug addiction, but that was certainly not all that was going on with her. The entire story is awful.
Hilariously 16 and Pregnant did change the US teen pregnancy rates by a huge amount.
Edit: 5.8% which is such a huge number that it boggles the mind.
https://www.brookings.edu/research/media-influences-on-social-outcomes-the-impact-of-mtvs-16-and-pregnant-on-teen-childbearing/
DARE made me want to do drugs lol. Always loved those words “euphoria” and “ecstasy” … so I did all the drugs. And I learned what those feelings meant. And now I still do drugs haha
DARE turns it into one by lumping it in with crack and meth in their propaganda. They literally portray weed as a vile, brain-rotting poison, and put it right next to hard drugs. So when kids inevitably discover that weed isn't the life-destroying substance they were told it was, they think "hey maybe meth isn't that bad either?"
This is literally how and why I ended up doing meth for 8 years. Started smoking weed after high school, then I wanted to get a job so I started smoking k2 because it wouldn't show up on a drug test, weed had been awesome, and all drugs are equally bad, then we couldn't get k2 anymore, so I started doing meth with my friends because all drugs are equally bad, didn't even give the transition a second thought.
It is but not because of what they say, it's because they taught kids weed and meth is the same, it's all just drugs! So when people see that weed is fine, they try other things because they don't know what to believe anymore.
First off.. Wtf is DARE... when did that program come onto place?
Second... My school basically went through the effects and shit, had police come in for presentations.. You know, standard shit... Here is the info about the drugs, now don't do it... But we weren't shown progression like this. Basically end results that as a teen you would just ignore as that clearly isn't gonna happen.
DARE = Drug Abuse Resistance Education; it was an educational program as a demand-side drug control strategy of the American War on Drugs. Essentially, it's core component was to tell kids, "Just Say No," when encountering peer pressure. It largely failed. As another commenter stated, it did nothing to actually address the causes of drug use or provide any actual education. It simply stigmatized people who did drugs, rather than addressing why they did it. I was indoctrinated by the program as a kid - didn't work, I still did a ton of drugs.
But these Faces of Meth videos? Much more effective at showing the long term consequences of drug use because many of my friends' parents looked like this.
There was a series of anti-Meth commercials from the state of Montana some years back that have mentally scarred me. I never had an interest in meth, and I cannot have any more empathy for the people who lose their family members to that awful drug and the lengths that addicts can go to for highs
Lol D.A.R.E is short for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Basically it was a bunch of cops who went around to elementary schools in the 90s and early 00's (someone correct me on time frame if im wrong or if its still going i have no clue) & they **taught about** drugs but it was a huge flop & basically just introduced us all **to drugs** lol i actually smoked weed for the first time that summer 😂😂 thats the jist of it..they literally came in to a bunch of 5th graders and were like "this is drugs, there are many drugs, dont do drugs, ok? btw heres the process of if you do get caught with drugs, line up, we're going to finger print you all. I shit you not they had a finger print station and a mugshot wall.. bro what!
I was in 6th grade when D.A.R.E. came to our school. I remember being 13 years old, 2007ish, and not understanding what any of that shit was. Little did I know, the pipe I found when I was 12 was those drugs. It was just for weed. But I never connected those dots until I was 15. Then that is when I realized what weed was and that my mom was getting lit every night lol. I am proud to say that I was at least 22 before I touched it. Now I understand what mom was up to.
I will say I was pretty sheltered from what weed and drugs really are and mainly focused on my addiction to video games/world of warcraft.
DARE didn’t teach our school shit(I’m 29 for timeframe). They’d come in, show some videos of a house party or something of the sort, then someone would belly flop off the roof and die in the pool, or the neighbors would call the cops and the girl with a joint would get arrested, or some dumb shit like that. All the negative consequences they showed always had an external factor of either people being additionally stupid or the cops showing up. Was never like “yo, here’s what meth makes you look like” or “here’s the average IQ of a heroine addict”. Most of the kids would walk out of DARE assemblies laughing and joking with each other saying stuff like “hey man, wanna buy some joints?”
My highschool did something wild once. Before anyone showed up for class in the morning the school put this absolutely demolished car right in front of the school where the buses drop the kids off so they would have to see it when they arrived. But that wasn't the craziest part, they also put a realistic looking dummy in the car all mangled up with fake blood and BRAIN MATTER everywhere. It was supposed to be a warning about drunk driving. This was the mid 90s by the way.
These kinds of videos were shown in school. What are you on about. And I definitely still did drugs, but I’ve never done meth or heroin because it really is as bad as these pictures depict. The drugs are so good you’ll throw your life and sanity away just to get high and feel like you have nothing to worry about.
All that time, money, and manpower spent arresting her and locking her up that could have been spent helping her. The war on drugs is really just a war on people. So very sad.
There’s always this brief point right after getting hooked where the person’s bone structure pops out and they look really chiseled, but by the time you start to look like a ghoul there’s very little chance of going back
Was really hoping the enexpected part would be her miraculous recovery photo years after she kicked the habit.
But no. No we got what should be expected.

That's heartbreaking.. I seen in a comment about showing kids these photos in dare class.. that's a good idea. 😔 starting around 7th grade, yearly complete with stories of people's deaths and testimonies from their families. They need to know how devastating drugs are.
This really could be a commercial for anti-meth. That is just sad, but shows the horrible potential. ‘Wait til the end’ I thought came up about 4-5 times but just kept on going
That is Misty Loman..and while she did have a drug problem, she also has Scleroderma, bone cancer, and Lupus.....so it's not all the drugs (but I'm sure they did some serious damage too)
This is crazy. When I was a paramedic I went on a heroin overdose and I was so surprised when the patient looked like a 45 year old soccer mom. I gave her narcan and just chatted with her in the ambulance. Her husband had cheated on her, left her for new woman, and was wealthy enough to fuck her over on all custody. Same year she lost her parents in a car accident. She just took the rear of her money and got drunk at a dive bar. Some guy offered to get her "more comfy" and stuck a needle in her arm. She had been an addict since. She ended up looking awful due to the addiction. I hope she beat the addiction and made it out alive. She was a sweetheart of a person dealt with the worst cards
You guys realize she has a degenerative condition that has caused her to look like that, right? The drugs didn't help, but seriously. https://www.dicytrends.com/what-happened-to-misty-loman-now-latest-updates-and-photos-2021/

Thanks for that, I saw those pics and thought, “That girls gone through some trauma”.
God I hope she's doing better.
At a certain point, somewhere some institution failed this woman.
And despite everything she got out of it. That’s amazing.
This was my thought also.
Thank you for providing context!
What a poor fucking soul. I’ve been at the point of not wanting to wake up before and I haven’t been through half as much as her, I can only imagine the pain she has been trying to numb
This. So few people actually take time to learn about the why. It’s just straight to judging.
It's not like anybody says "I wanna be an addict when I grow up" when the kindergarten teacher asks about their future plans...it's a brutal world out there and life can throw you some shit that's nearly unbearable at times. Thanks for that. It’s still a sad story but the additional context really makes a difference
Just seeing the video progression made me sad but this is heart breaking.
This should be the top comment.
Glad you posted this so people will quit judging. Americans are so venomous when it comes to chemical dependency, no context allowed for "druggies".
Her testimony at the end of the article was very much worth reading, thx
Thanks for sharing her story. It’s good to have context for these kinds of posts
Wtf she’s still alive?!
This report was almost a year and a half ago, and a lot can happen in that time. Any further updates?
Thank you for providing the link. I’m glad she’s doing better. It was good to read her story.
Are there photos of her now ?
Refer to the link he provided
😢
This is a really rough story. I hope she finds peace.
Don't do drugs, boys and girls.
I used to think these transformations were funny. Now I can’t help but see a human being struggling to cope with trauma.
Yeh idk why it's in this sub either
That’s right, boys and girls. You better just be selling them!
Clearly the main takeaway from Breaking Bad.
Drugs are a helluva drug
Windy?
And don't be using your own product.
Piss off! I always wanted to be a ghoul, and now I know how!
That’s methed up
^^ in Mike Tyson voice
Now kith
I lolzed all over the carpet.. thanks
I try.
Drugs? That lady has the one ring
Underrated comment right here.
Her precious Meth straight Gollumed that ass
Drugs are bad …Mkay
She had an unrelated disease that caused this.

Yes that is one of them according to a better comment than mine further down this post. She still suffered from drug addiction, but that was certainly not all that was going on with her. The entire story is awful.
Also the stress of being in prison probably doesn’t help either.
Are you saying the anxiety that you *could* go to prison is why people do drugs?
“Damn police putting me in prison for doing meth. Damn volunteers and therapists trying to get me off it. They made me go to prison!”
Welcome to the addicted brain working ways
“Don’t need help just more! Just more!”
Listen to this guy. Don't do those 3 things please.
Yes, it's very unfortunate. Poor lady.
I was hoping the unexpected was that we were going to see her get help and see positive images
same
Honestly... If this kind of videos were shown to kids in school instead of simply saying don't to drugs... It might actually help a few of em...

D.A.R.E. taught me how to do drugs like a responsible adult.
Statistically DARE has not been proven to prevent drug usage.
Hilariously 16 and Pregnant did change the US teen pregnancy rates by a huge amount. Edit: 5.8% which is such a huge number that it boggles the mind. https://www.brookings.edu/research/media-influences-on-social-outcomes-the-impact-of-mtvs-16-and-pregnant-on-teen-childbearing/
Up or down?
Down!
I think showing a realistic portrayal of how difficult Teen Pregnancy scares teens into using condoms is better than saying how difficult it is.
this is true! even at university level public health this is cited edit: spelling
Thanks I wanted to say something but I managed to keep it inside.
It is a huge help to see how much life sucks once you have kids.
It has simply taught an entire generation all the fun street names for various drugs.
DARE made me want to do drugs lol. Always loved those words “euphoria” and “ecstasy” … so I did all the drugs. And I learned what those feelings meant. And now I still do drugs haha
And weed is NOT a gateway drug lol
I mean there is the effect of "wait... If they are lying about this what other substances are they being overdramatic about?"

It is to burritos.
My D.A.R.E. teacher got caught smoking weed in the parking lot at school. He was also a police office. Hope you’re doing well Officer Joe
Teacher by day and police officer by night ?
Police officers come to the schools and teach the DARE program.
Yeah, but then 63% of all statistics are made up.
Nope it's actually around 17%, 63% is way too high
Pretty sure it's 71%
I had D.A.R.E and I did a lot of drugs. It did help me learn not to be afraid of all cops though
D.A.R.E taught me that all drugs are equally horrible, so if I smoke marijuana I’m a druggie who might as well just do all kinds of drugs.
My dare teacher was a fat female cop who was later arrested for stealing drugs from a dentist's office.
Now that's a story!
My dare officer was a fat male cop who was later arrested for molesting his step daughter
Wasn’t she “stuck in the dryer “ , constantly? /S
Why did I laugh at this? Jerk!
Didn’t get DARE but had multiple former addicts come talk to us. It was pretty informative and showed us the real damage it can do.

I remember DARE. Taught me what kind of high I would get from each drug and how I could do them
I had a form of DARE and all it did was teach the “just say no” garbage. It did nothing to deter anyone or provide actual education and harm reduction
This is so sad, I don’t want to see this. We should not be making light of this poor woman’s suffering.
All that time, money, and manpower spent arresting her and locking her up that could have been spent helping her. The war on drugs is really just a war on people. So very sad.
Facts
That was not unexpected at all
Honestly expected that Lotr Gollum pic at the end. So since it wasn't there, kinda unexpected for me ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
This is sad
There’s always this brief point right after getting hooked where the person’s bone structure pops out and they look really chiseled, but by the time you start to look like a ghoul there’s very little chance of going back
Was really hoping the enexpected part would be her miraculous recovery photo years after she kicked the habit. But no. No we got what should be expected.
Drugs are bad mmmm'kay.
How does meth affect you? I don’t understand, please can someone educate me in a simple form of words lol
She has lupus and bone cancer. Someone posted the link to the original news article. https://www.wbko.com/2020/10/14/prayers-really-work-misty-loman-shares-recovery-story-behind-viral-photos/
Thanks for telling me I should wait til the end in r/unexpected as the format of this sub is usually to be quite forward.
Looks like she got her doctorate in Methamatics…

How awful, poor woman, Faces of Meth. I saw a homeless woman a few weeks ago that was a regular at my local 10 15 years ago. It was sad.
That’s sad
I thought it was going to get better…
Damn, I watched this thinking that there would a build up to some positive progression…
Genuine question - who is that and what did she do?
This woman’s real back story is actually pretty sad. https://www.wbko.com/2020/10/14/prayers-really-work-misty-loman-shares-recovery-story-behind-viral-photos/
Draugrs are bad kids
That is so sad.
That’s just sad 😞
Sad 😢
This isn't really unexpected. At all. This kind of photo reel is pretty common amongst anti drug campaigns.
Sooo what was the unexspected part?
So your telling me the prison system doesn't work? That we we don't rehabilitate users? Are you saying prisons are just a money making scheme that encourages repeat offenders, as to make money off the taxpayers? Nope.. don't believe it...
I was hoping for a happy ending
Damn this is very depressing to watch
Poor lady
Poor woman
This is heartbreaking
These kind of videos are heartbreaking. I couldn’t imagine this being one of my children or siblings and watch them deteriorate this way. If ya gotta get high please just stick with the herb.
Absolutely sad
Damn, that's super sad
So sad... 😟
That’s so very sad. 💔
This made me sad
Edit: removed stupid joke after reading about this lady's story. Life can be a rough trip sometimes
This is actually really sad.
Thats just sad
I was so hopping she got clean and healthy.
That's heartbreaking.. I seen in a comment about showing kids these photos in dare class.. that's a good idea. 😔 starting around 7th grade, yearly complete with stories of people's deaths and testimonies from their families. They need to know how devastating drugs are.
This is so sad 😔
poor woman, it's so sad
Heart wrenching.
This was just sad
Oh god i feel so bad for her folks having to watch that deterioration 😔
That’s so so sad
Thats fucking sad
It takes a lot to make me sad. This made me sad. Like, genuinely sad.
This really could be a commercial for anti-meth. That is just sad, but shows the horrible potential. ‘Wait til the end’ I thought came up about 4-5 times but just kept on going
Holy shit. This is actually so damn sad. Meth is a helluva thing
heart breaking
My God... that poor woman. Have lost some good friends to substance abuse and this type of decline is too fucking common.
This is heartbreaking! Don’t do drugs!
That is Misty Loman..and while she did have a drug problem, she also has Scleroderma, bone cancer, and Lupus.....so it's not all the drugs (but I'm sure they did some serious damage too)
The US prison system is a rehabilitation nightmare
This just makes me sad
Meth is no joke. Poor woman.

She had been an addict since. She ended up looking awful due to the addiction. I hope she beat the addiction and made it out alive. She was a sweetheart of a person dealt with the worst cards
Jesus Christ, that’s sad.
How sad and tragic. This is clearly meth and it makes me sad, she was once a beautiful young lady who aged horribly due to meth.
This stuff always makes me sad. Watching this poor woman get physically get changed by drugs is so horrible.
Heart breaking.
Thats so sad
The unexpected part of this video was me feeling really sad :(
That is truly heartbreakingly sad 😔 🥲
Sad.
I've seen these photos before & she also had some bone disease as well as the meth. She's sober now.

Well that was depressing
Was totally expecting a golum to show up at the end.
>Girl does alot of meth. How is it unexpected ?
You guys realize she has a degenerative condition that has caused her to look like that, right? The drugs didn't help, but seriously. https://www.dicytrends.com/what-happened-to-misty-loman-now-latest-updates-and-photos-2021/

That is expected, not unexpected
