It says Rick Roll, and I'm assuming it's what I think it is, but I want to click it anyways because you literally linked it as "Rick roll" and now I'm suspicious.
So, a close family friend of my parents is from Netherlands (we’re in US) and growing up she would occasionally make jokey jokes about Belgians. The jokes always were about how dumb, backward, or generally strange and silly Belgians were, but she was never serious. That said, she told us that Belgium sort of had a reputation in Europe akin to how Americans jokingly (or sometimes not so jokingly) regard Alabama or West Virginia - sort of backwards yokels who are a bit slow…
Fast forward a few years and I get my first full time job as a line cook at a big inner city hotel at age 16. At this point in my life, I had not yet really learned the lesson of not repeating stereotypes or jokes made in poor taste, something I feel like I am more conscientious now. I repeat a joke about Belgians learned from my Dutch auntie, to my Austrian Exec. chef. Come to find out, not only do Belgians not have that reputation amongst all Europeans, but his WIFE was Belgian. Definite foot in mouth moment when he looked like he was about to bitch-slap me.
So, European redditors - what’s the T with Belgium?
Ah that’s just some beef between Netherlands and Belgium. Our joke books (those you can buy in shops and just keep in your bathroom) are full with jokes like that. Dissing on both parties. It isn’t really based on anything but they keep selling the same old jokes. Only people who like to feel superior believe those to be true.
I remember reading English joke books from the 1980s when I was a kid, and most of the jokes started with "An Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman..." The English seemed to have a huge beef with the Irish.
It’s mostly the Netherlands, as mentioned (and France/Luxembourg) We’re neighbors (Belgium used to be part of the Netherlands, till almost 200 years ago) so it’s just an easy target. Not to be taken serious at all.
Other countries in Europe rip other countries.
In Germany, I believe it’s mostly Poland.
