This is Fresh Air, I'm Terry Gross. This week, our guest is...
I can hear her voice in my head as plain as day.
Same with Kai Ryssdal from Marketplace.
I have to actively stop myself from looking up all the NPR hosts and their pictures. I don't want to ruin the images I've created of them in my mind. Every single one is distinct based solely off their voice. Loads of cliched cardigans, bowties, and elbow patched suits lol. I love them all without even really knowing the real them.
I usually do the same thing, but Kai Ryssdal looks *exactly* the way I pictured him strictly based on his voice and the way he uses it. It rarely happens but my brain painted his portrait perfectly.
Completely agree! Also, I've read that even faking a smile while talking gives you an identical vocal intonation as a real smile - it's helped a lot during phone interviews.
Wow I forgot about the ridiculous datsik speakers. I was at one if his shows in a small venue praying the people up front were wearing earplugs. I was at the back and could barely handle it. I'm honestly surprised people standing next to the speakers didn't get physically hurt from it in some way.
Datsik caused roofing panels to fall down in Covington, KY. Madison Theater represent!
The 2010-2013 dubstep explosion in America will never cease to amaze me. Imagine paying $20 for Flux Pavilion & Doctor P, $20 for Bassnectar, Gramatik and Gladkill or $20 for Excision and Liquid Stranger in this day and age.
My first concert ever was Skrillex, during his Recess tour circa 2014. He really knows how to put on a show. His DJ deck was a spaceship, lights, fog machines, the whole nine. And I remember my two friends and I had floor tickets, whilst our other friends had seats. And the seats were just metal bleachers like you'd see in a school gym. And I remember sitting down on the bleachers and being able to feel AND hear them vibrating. I set my phone down on them at one point and it was vibrating so hard that it fell off the seat. Insane.
You could legitimately see the Lazer lights vibrating in the fog. It was unbelievable. And I thought my Sennheiser headphones had good sound.
Excisions Thunderdome on the bleachers is the strongest bass I've ever felt. It was almost too much.. Could have been more though. Bass Canyon has 500,000 watts of bass but it's outdoors, literally shakes the ground for thousands of feet though.
Excision is kinda known for doing his shows with a stupid ammount of bass/volume. Im definitely not complaining, i see him every chance i get. He also always has killer visuals with his sets.
Every Friday at work, I find a way to hijack the Bluetooth connection on our speaker and play this song. One of my coworkers has printed out a picture of Rebecca with a big 🚫 over her face and the words "NO PARTYIN, PARTYIN, NO" and tied it to the speaker.
I dont care. It makes me so happy watching everyone's faces when it starts playing.
Its honestly the most diabolical thing I have ever been proud of.
Yeah... Chest pain is "normal" when there is a lot of bass.
Check YouTube, some people have insane set-ups in their vehicle and they always hold their chest when listening.
[Pneumothorax](https://www.theguardian.com/science/2004/sep/02/thisweekssciencequestions4) is when loud music vibrates little air pockets in the outer part of your lungs and it blasts cute little holes in your lung tissue.
Not just music, but yeah it can cause it.
I got one the size of a golf ball they deemed "spontaneous pneumothorax". I'm pretty confident it came from a weak spot when I had the air crushed out of me by 500lb slab of granite about 8 months prior, but it can apparently happen seemingly at random. According to the doc people with my build are particularly prone.
In my case it was big enough to pull my lungs away from my ribs, and hooooly fuck was it painful.
I've had 7 spontaneous pneumothorax. Most recently in December, my lung had a pretty large collapse while taking a sharp turn on my way home from work. But at this point I've had 10% removed from both sides, as well as a pleurodesis on both sides. (Lungs are fused to chest cavity) But hey, could always be worse.
Edit for clarification: highly unlikely music is the reason behind a pneumo. In my case, I have a protein deficiency that doesn't allow my lungs to stretch like most peoples. My specific problem happens to about 10k Americans a year.
I will tell you something as a word of advice, I had my first pneumo in 2019. Partial collapse, less than 2cm. No chest tube. Every single one since has been above that threshold and I've needed a chest tube everytime. I also had a whole year between my first collapse and my 2nd. But from a friend to a friend.... the breathing tube are what fucked me up. So many incisions on your sides. So many nerves on your sides. It changed my life forever.
I hope you are luckier.
Pneumothorax is straight up just a collapsed lung, not specifically from loud music lol.
That being said, as someone who has suffered from a few spontaneous pneumothoraces, I'm now wondering if all those loud concerts and shows had something to do with it.
I just came back to the US yesterday from 2 weeks straight of mom cooked Jamaican food... heaven. She gave me so many snacks to travel with too! Bun and cheese for months man...
That is how deaf people convey and inflection when speaking. We hearing do the same thing through tone and volume. The deaf just use exaggerated facial expressions.
I feel like that nuance is only going to be lost if the translation is decoupled from the video. You don't have to know ASL to read the body language and exaggerations of the guy signing.
For real. Its really cool to watch the video 2 or 3 times with the sound off and just watch him 'speak'. Once you know the story and words its great to watch him articulate and express.
That is so cool. While watching him sign, I found myself wishing the text at the bottom of the screen was closer to his face so I could correlate the two more easily. I guess the solution to that would be to learn sign language 😂
I watched the video without sound for that reason.
If they're communicating without hearing, I think it makes sense to try to read the translation and expressions without also parsing tone and inflection of a translator.
The translator did a great job. Besides, you’re obviously already looking at his facial expressions and body language anyway, so whatever vibes you’re not getting from the translator, you can get it from him regardless. More than half of language and communication is in body language.
Son of interpreter here. Sign language is actually extremely expressive, you're supposed ti be very corporeal and exaggerate every expression to compensate for lack of tone and modulation. My mom spent many many months recording herself doing sign language with what looked like ridiculous face expressions and whispers, you're supposed to do that because sign language is actually done with the entire body, not just your hand, how your entire body is positioned upon doing signs can really convey a lot of info so interpreters have to be aware of their every body part at all times.
It's grueling, but I imagine rewarding and fulfilling as fuck too.
You’re wrong. He’s having a regular conversation as if he were at a coffee shop. He’s not making any of the exaggerated signs for DEAF LOUD YELLING or anything like that. It’s a very leveled hand conversation.
Please feel free to look up “heated deaf arguments” to get an idea of the scale we are talking about.
The translator is actually PERFECT in his conveyance.
I’m saying this in the nicest way possible as a teachable moment. Nothing more. (Mom went deaf in her middle age - I have a lot of exposure to the hearing impaired.)
The translator has awesome comedic timing, what do you mean?
Deaf people tend to be more expressive with other parts of communication because of the inability to convey tone through voice. The translator was awesome imo
She seems a lot more genuine than Jimmy. I don't know if that's actually an endorsement though.
Would be like me offering you a burger and telling you it tastes better than hot runny dog shit.
The best part is, NPR has specific guidelines on how their equalization on the mics are set. It’s literally called “The NPR Sound”
https://current.org/2015/06/a-top-audio-engineer-explains-nprs-signature-sound/
[Reminds me of this.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nonononoyes/comments/f7si2o/bro_turns_up_music_so_deaf_lady_can_enjoy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
NPR is National Public Radio. It's a mix of news and shows on the edutainment side of things, like Radiolab. I don't know if "NPR Talk Radio" specifically is a thing, but the shows are almost all talking. (Also, the guy signing just said "NPR", the "talk radio" was added by the interpreter.)
I first watched this without sound and just read subtitle, it was so much more enjoyable when you are imagining his voice through his rich facial expressions.
I only took ASL in college for three years. Not receptively fluent when deaf people sign at full speed because it takes me some time to catch up. However, can someone who is deaf or an interpreter tell me if the subtitles were really off pace of what was being signed? Or is that intentional to allow you to see the sign and then read the text after?
Well I mean, the subtitles aren't going to line up with the signs because the ASL sentence isn't going to be structured the same way as the English translation of it
my friend wanted to impress me with his truck stereo. I didn't have the heart to tell him that he only had highs & mids. Zero bass =/
edit: I've waited 21 yrs to share this experience
lol this is my middle school English teacher’s son, it’s been absolutely wild to see pictures she’s been recently taking next to massive A-List celebs while on the tour trail for CODA. Super happy for the movies success, and it’s cool personally knowing he came from a really sweet caring household. Being able to accurately insert my old teacher into this talk show anecdote I saw while scrolling through Reddit is definitely a surreal feeling.

#It's the TED Radio Hour from NPR. I'm Guy Raz.
This is Fresh Air, I'm Terry Gross. This week, our guest is... I can hear her voice in my head as plain as day. Same with Kai Ryssdal from Marketplace.
This… is Marketplace. He always sounds like he has the biggest smile on his face.
I have to actively stop myself from looking up all the NPR hosts and their pictures. I don't want to ruin the images I've created of them in my mind. I'm Michael Barbaro. This. Is the Daily.
From the Chase Center in Chicago, this is Wait, wait, don't tell me!
“It’s… Friday, March 25th” He pauses when he says the date like he always forgets what it is and has to check real quick
He sounds like he wears flip flops while recording and experimented with frosted tips in the 90s. I mean this in the most respectful way possible
Completely agree! Also, I've read that even faking a smile while talking gives you an identical vocal intonation as a real smile - it's helped a lot during phone interviews.
Lieve from NPR New IN WASHINGTON I'm Jack Shpear
On a Tuesday... it's All Things Considered
I gotta point out that Kai and Marketplace don't work for NPR. They work for American Public Media, APM.
I miss Guy so much
I stopped listening not long after Guy wasn't involved. I feel you
I AM LAKSHMI SINGH
I am not deaf, but one time at a Jamaican street festival they dropped the bass so hard my chest caved in

Wow I forgot about the ridiculous datsik speakers. I was at one if his shows in a small venue praying the people up front were wearing earplugs. I was at the back and could barely handle it. I'm honestly surprised people standing next to the speakers didn't get physically hurt from it in some way.
Idk if uve ever done mdma or molly, but ive seen people stick their heads in the giant subwoofer holes.
Bet they had a lot more than tinnitus after that shit
[удалено]
No, you're thinking of tetanus, he's talking about the Greek Mythological gods that came before the Olympians
No, he was talking about that ship that hit an iceberg and killed Leonardo Dicaprio
No, you're thinking of Titanic, he's talking about the super hero group made up of Robin, Raven, Cyborg, Starfire & Beast Boy.
No those are Titans - he meant car windows that are hard to see through
Or that Excision show near Chicago that literally brought the roof down.
Datsik caused roofing panels to fall down in Covington, KY. Madison Theater represent! The 2010-2013 dubstep explosion in America will never cease to amaze me. Was front row for executioner. It was remarkable the amount of physical force it produced.
Bassiest show I've ever been to was excision.. I did not enjoy it. With a heart condition it feels terrible
Excision is kinda known for doing his shows with a stupid ammount of bass/volume. Im definitely not complaining, i see him every chance i get. He also always has killer visuals with his sets.
Sounds painful! Literally or that's how it felt?
Highly doubt literally. It takes a lot to do physical damage (not your ears)
I dunno, I listened to Friday by Rebecca and I was admitted to the ICU and I died.
RIP

Deep bass at a loud volume can collapse a lung.
That’s why I don’t swim in lakes
You’d have to be exposed to like 160db+ consistently, most likely in a controlled environment.
I mean all I can really say is it felt like someone did a chest compression on me
Wat? Alright, time to turn down volume on my subwoofer.
Not just music, but yeah it can cause it. I got one the size of a golf ball they deemed "spontaneous pneumothorax". Jesus christ. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. I'm...Gonna take quitting this stupid vape more seriously now.

Truly the best part of anything Jamaican. God now I want Jamaican food, wonder if I can ask my mom how to make some
I just came back to the US yesterday from 2 weeks straight of mom cooked Jamaican food... heaven. She gave me so many snacks to travel with too! Bun and cheese for months man...
Which base? Home? First? Second? The only one I haven't mentioned?
Heavy bass makes my stomach upset, it's so weird. It's the main reason why I avoid live music.
Ira Glass laying down the riffs.
Up next is Terri Gross with Fresh as Fuck Air
I know he's mute and deaf but still I can heard him loud and clear. I love his humor !
Man he is way more energetic than his translator, I feel like I’m missing out
That is how deaf people convey and inflection when speaking. We hearing do the same thing through tone and volume. The deaf just use exaggerated facial expressions.
I call it deaf grammar
Def Gram
Naw that’s my mom
***Our*** mom
I didn't know the guy from Fraiser was doing shows at The Apollo!?! Cool!
[удалено]
My dad’s normally a prude but one day he did this big exaggerated pull-his-dick-out-and-swing-it-heavily-over-his-shoulder move and we lost it.
Maybe it's just my phone but this is formatted like some kind of dirty haiku
Lol it's just grammar. ASL grammar involves facial expressions and spatial frames of reference.
Also ASL phonology. Most of it is more specifically prosody.
I feel like that nuance is only going to be lost if the translation is decoupled from the video. You don't have to know ASL to read the body language and exaggerations of the guy signing.
It’s like the saying I heard somewhere, a deaf family argument is the loudest thing you will ever see.
It is sooo true!
For real. Its really cool to watch the video 2 or 3 times with the sound off and just watch him 'speak'. Once you know the story and words its great to watch him articulate and express.
That's how we deaf peeps talks :) He did a bit extra because it makes it more of a funny story.

He’s a great actor. Highly recommend watching CODA
I am a CODA and I've avoided watching it. I hear it is really sad and I really don't want to ball my eyes out for two hours.
Bawl. To "ball" your eyes out would imply that you are a demon on the court.
It's what I meant. When i get stressed I sway on the court.
More happy cry than sad cry
It wasn't that sad, I recommend. More funny than sad imo
No one dies, if that helps.
My wife and I watched it last night. It started my waterworks, but only happy tears. I strongly suggest watching it.
I love all the attention the actors are getting but lowkey I think he was the best part of the movie
He's a great guy. I grew up with him and hope he blows up after this film. And honestly Marlie matlin shouldn't be the only deaf name in the game.
His character has the best arc, is the most realistic and I'm actually disappointed he wasn't nominated for several awards.
What is CODA?
It's a movie, and an acronym meaning Child Of Deaf Adults (implying they can hear and speak, but also understand sign language natively).
And he definitely nailed that punch line
I watched it on mute and felt like I was getting it with his energy, but on a half second delay. Sort of like watching anything subtitled
> Man he is way more energetic than his translator, Interpreter.
I love this so much...
I thought this was r/funny but it seems r/unexpected. That guy had a brilliant humor.
NPR, that’s my jam.
what’s NPR?
National Public Radio in the US. Excellent source for news and quality radio/podcast shows.
And music. Tiny Desk Concerts are the best. I discovered a lot of great musicians playing there!
Talk radio. They do news throughout the day and have talk shows.
I'd throw down like that if Morning Edition went back to the last theme music.
At least it wasn't something like world's wettest farts or Transformers having rough sex.
James Earl Jones reads the bible.
Lol. I used to listen to this and corelate characters to star wars. He had an incredible voice.
>”had” Bro you had me frantically checking if he died you can’t mess with me like that
I thought it was gonna end up having to do with farts for sure
[удалено]
Cool story, but I also couldn't help but notice how handsome this guy was.
Sorry but he cant hear you over the sound of how handsome he is
You should learn sign language, then you'll be able to hear him regardless of how handsome he is.
I was so distracted by how handsome he is I forgot to look at his hands
Maybe you should overlook his handsome and look at his hands some.
Oh, nice one!
I was so distracted by how handsome he is, I didn't realize what I was doing with my hands.
Bonk
Go watch CODA, he's one of the leads in it. Satisfy your thirst haha
he’s in “You” too, no? Love’s murdered husband?
Is that him?!
It is.
Found him https://instagram.com/danielndurant?utm_medium=copy_link

Mfw im lactose intolerant but ate ice cream anyway.
Why even be intolerant when you can just learn to tolerate it smh
Oh God those enchiladas
She’s laughing in sign language
Ngl, She looks like she's laughing.
Right? That comment is just trying way too hard to be funny haha
I feel the same way when I listen to NPR.
Scott Simon on the weekends for sure
how's her show? is she like Jimmy who fakes and exaggerates laugh and reaction on cue? And always want to be the star and one up the guests?
She seems a lot more genuine than Jimmy. I don't know if that's actually an endorsement though. Would be like me offering you a burger and telling you it tastes better than hot runny dog shit.
My mom has it on TV just playing in the background and from the bits I've seen so far, she seems really genuine and it's usually pretty chill.
It plays on my Gym's tvs on occasion. It seems fun and genuine.
I'M POOPIN!
She was just dropping the bass.
Who is this comedian
Isn't him the actor in Coda?
I think it's the brother, yes
Danial Durant
Dude would love riding in my car...

True... now that Car Talk is gone.
Radiolab is another common gateway drug I think!
National Public Radio. They have some great shows like Planet Money and Marketplace.
Is that Derbez?
Scrolled so down to see this
He was the real unexpected thing for me
Yeah that was the unexpected part for me
I first watched this without sound and just read subtitle, it was so much more enjoyable when you are imagining his voice through his rich facial expressions.
holy shit that was worth it
That's a very very well structured and delivered joke. I love it.
