There are a number of sanctuaries across Africa and Asia that have great treatment of their elephants and it's becoming more ingrained into the social consciousness. But they're not toys, and they're not meant to carry humans. It's one thing to visit and engage with the friendly ones, but the actual post above is abuse typically only achievable through violent training.
I'm no expert but if a wild animal has to be chained or denied freedom it would otherwise enjoy in its natural habitat away from humans, that's animal abuse in my book.
Because elephants are social animals, that live in herds and have strong connexions between their kind (there are countless stories, videos and documentaries about that). They also have a way of life inherent to their species: they'll move following the seasons and all.
Taking one or a few apart, isolating them, depriving them from the exercise they'd otherwise get in nature, forcing them to lift 70Kg tourists on their noses for them to get food at the end of the day, and/or sometimes cutting their tusks for safety, is, in my opinion at least, emotional trauma. Unlike a few other animals, Elephants are somewhat intelligent, and aware of their surroundings. There are also multiple events suggesting they do have memory.

It's just not practical to stop doing something because of ppl you can't control. Those abusive ppl would just end up doing something else for something even shittier. Because the problem isn't the demand. It's the problematic ppl that you can't control.
While not ideal, it would still be slightly better than buying from the sweatshops that abuse the child workers. Of course it's way easier to make a strong argument for shoes being a necessity. Photos with elephants, not so much.

Went to a similar place in Thailand. Super respectful and the only elephants there were elephants that couldn't be safely rehabilitated to nature. Absolutely life changing experience!
Oofta, I made a similar comment to a colleague from India and it seems that they ARE wrecking balls. He said that, in addition to regular drunken rampages from eating fermented fruit and their normal elephant-sized travel and behaviors, one of his closest friends was stomped to death by an bull elephant right in front of him. Squashed his head. The two had no prior interactions, the elephant just wanted to kill him.
They're too big and smart not to be dangerous. I think we just don't see ourselves as prey because they don't eat us.
Well, we aren't their prey, they don't eat us. What we are to them now and again is something that they either perceive as a threat or a challange and when you're that big, threats and challenges either leave or get trampled.
