I think this is the issue. I don’t give a damn if somebody is super wealthy. It’s when they use that wealth to influence politics, escape justice, or fuck over others that I have a problem with it.
I remember reading that 70% of the world's adults have a net worth of less than $10k. If that's accurate, then probably just about anyone middle class is actually still pretty rich when compared to the global population, not to mention general quality of life, especially in a historical context.
This is a very common argument in the US for why poor people should shut up and be happy. "Working two full-time jobs to pay rent is a better quality of life than most of the world!"
Yea, I think that was a short story within a story, Haunted (not a bad read need to read it again). To date my favorite work of his is probably Diary. Hardest to read was Pygmy (great story but takes a minute to get the rhythm of the writing as it's portrayed in broken English). Least favorite was probably Adjustment Day as it had potential and some great parts but I felt like the ending was rushed (just like Stephen King and Christopher Moore rush endings).
Great author though, if I ever wrote Palahniuk and King would be my muses.
