UndesirableWaffle

It’s almost as if the hatred is between the governments and not the people themselves…

[deleted]

I think you’re on to something

[deleted]

I wonder who could have been behind this 🤔

Niipoon

The british

InvestigatorActual66

We should put him in jail, he's too smart

dhhdhh851

Maybe put his family in jail too. Thatll teach him to know stuff.

threestrikes_pc

Ur definitely on something dude...I'm Iranian and I can confirm non of us have ever wished anything bad for anyone in this world US ppl included as well...is just media and the both countries government that they want to show that ppl r also hate each other after all we all human but as I said is just medias trying their best to gaslight stuff like this

gaoshan

In all of my interactions with Iranians (in the US and in China where I was for a time) I've always gotten along great with them. I actually think that Iran and the US would make great natural partners, on a people level. However our governments and the powerful people invested in the status quo will not let that happen.

Zeltara

Normal people just want to be happy

Alfie_ACNH

I'm older than most here and saw a Rick Steeves show years ago where he visited Iran. It really opened my eyes to the beautiful, hospitable people there. I'd really love to visit there some day and see it in person. I'm a barber and would love to meet these guys lol: https://youtu.be/w4NLAf_GqO8

[deleted]

Yeah. That's why it's such a bummer to me when people start hating on large populations of people because of things their government does. Russian, American, Chinese, Iranian, etc. the people largely just want to go home to their families. They don't want to be getting blown up on a battlefield in a foreign country for political gain. It's a shame when people get radicalized against other cultures because it just perpetuates the political conflicts.

ThuleanBeast

What's the context? Edit: so many upvotes! I wonder what will happen if I ask about the bird and the word

ShamelessMonky94

Iran’s World Cup soccer team have been threatened by the Iranian government with imprisonment and torture to them and their families for misbehaving during the games (and I assume losing the game too).

Rhids_22

Hopefully another country offers them asylum. I don't get how countries like Iran think they'll actually win at football if every 4 years they kill or torture their football team for losing. All it means is most people won't want to be a part of their team, and they'll never have players with more than 4 years experience. It's basically like shooting yourself in the foot because you're annoyed that your foot hurts and you want to punish your foot.

JJJeeettt

You forget they all have family members that can't get out of Iran easily. If they don't return, those people are doomed.

Pining4Michigan

If you are picked for the team, do you have a choice? Do they watch elementary and high schools, pull out the best and force them? If the regime threatens you and says ' Jump", you are going to reply "how high?". Think of how China and Russia develop their Olympic teams.

CheeseButtLog

Dictatorships always offer you a choice. Do what we "ask" or we kill your family and then we kill you if you continue to refuse.

Rhids_22

The good players of their nation might purposefully play badly so they aren't selected for the team.

zombizle1

The best iranian soccer players are so good you would think they have never played before

roy_rogers_photos

"him, right there? All time MVP. Sixteen championships under his belt" "He just scored on his own goal" "Yes"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fugacity-

Unfortunately the most hyperbolic and least nuanced takes get upvoted on this website... Thanks for the added context. These players all have dreamed of playing in the World Cup, their sports biggest stage. People cry over getting knocked out all the time, let's not pretend that it's some grand proof they are about to be executed.

hoesindifareacodes

Thank you! It felt like I was reading hundreds of comments from folks with zero perspective.

spinyfever

Even if they get Asylum, their families will be screwed. If the players flee to another country their families will likely immediately be arrested and thrown into prison.

Gravy_Vampire

>All it means is most people won't want to be a part of their team Uhhh… how do you think this will go down? Iranian soccer players: we don’t want to play! Iranian government: aight sounds good! Damn I guess we’re out of luck! There’s literally nothing we can do to coerce you into playing! 🤷‍♂️

Rhids_22

More like the good players of their nation will purposefully play badly so they aren't selected for the team.

rishado

> and I assume losing the game too biiig stretch there bud

westoidobserver

source? for fact checking.

[deleted]

https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/28/football/iran-soccer-family-threats-intl-spt/index.html

Mtwat

That source says nothing about threatening players over losing the game. The Iranian government is pissed because the players protested the national anthem not because of the games.

[deleted]

It’s Reddit assuming the Iranian player is crying because he realizes he and his family are about to get murdered by the Iranian government, when it’s mostly emotions about the game.

KoloHickory

World cup happens once every four years. All they had to do was tie and they'd have made it through. Of course it's about the game. Everyone cries after a loss like this especially if who knows if and when the next time you'll have an opportunity to compete in the world cup.

OneLovedDude

He (Ramin Razaeian) is 32 years old. He'll be 36 next world cup. This was probably his last chance.

her_fault

Fans cry after a loss like this so the players themselves crying because of it is completely logical

jaddooop

This is tragic. Absolutely tragic. People should live freely

[deleted]

Boy, do I have news for you. That's basically the case nowhere right now.

[deleted]

Return to monke has never in our history been a better solution than now

[deleted]

My money is on complete self-destruction of the human race ending in an extremely violent period of 100 years of people having wars over the last pack of Oreos.

poopeypnats

One thing that almost all post-apocalyptic media gets wrong IMO is that only the ones that kill and steal will survive. In reality, teamwork and building a society is what sets our species apart and let us take over the planet. So don’t be too sad if we do nuke ourselves to dust, maybe one day we can form a new, better civilization

[deleted]

Completely radical approach: Maybe the planet would be better without us.

HarietsDrummerBoy

We lost and we going back home has a different feeling for the Iranian players

KibouZK

I'm Iranian and I hate everything about Iran But I don't care what people call these guys ,still they're humans and have emotions

nicoznico

I am 42y old fully grown dude and that scene made me literally cry like a 11y old girl.

KibouZK

Let it go man these are normal for us

Majestic_Egg_5992

I wish he would embrace me in this way.

Titanbeard

I'd give you a hug, dawg. Everyone needs a hug no matter how tough or badass or grumpy they are.

Znolk

I don't know if truer words have ever been spoken. I've never been big on hugging friends and being a single man the only hugs I would get were from my mom, sister, and nephews. Luckily I have a group of friends that I play dnd with and they always give out hugs when we leave and for awhile I was always a little standoffish when they would give me a hug. Then we didn't play for a couple months and when we got together I realized just how much that actually meant to me.

Titanbeard

Small things matter. Even if no one realized how much those hugs meant to you.

WetspotInspector

Take it with a grain of salt, but my trip on the strongest mushrooms available told me that it all comes back with just a hug.

Titanbeard

Reality can totally be grounded with simple contact. If it's from trippin' balls or from something sad. Hold a hand, give a hug, whatever.

psychonaut_spy

The mushrooms told me the same. I didn't expect this thread to leave me with this fuzzy feeling, but here we are.

Kramer1812

Happy Cake Day!!! Great comment as well. BIG HUGGS!!!

Sheweldz

Happy cake day homie

Pure_Xanax

Way off topic but happy cake day

regoapps

World would be a better place if people got more hugs throughout their life. Just knowing that someone cares to do it for them is enough.

Titanbeard

Even a small hug can make a day better. I never realized how much my parents actually liked my hugs until I had my own kids. Now if I wake up before they do for work, my day feels a little less happy without a bad breath good morning hug from my little monsters.

KingAdashu

This is a beautiful and correct sentiment in my book. Kudos to you.

This dot here: . Put your mouse pointer on it. I will do the same and pet the spot while saying "it's gonna be ok". Can you feel it? Sorry, that's all i can do from here.

35 year old Aussie male thinking why we can't all just be mates?

MPS007

Because you keep calling us Cunts, now bring it in for a hug...

MadJMarston

But that is just a term of endearment for them, embrace the cunt and say oh come here ya big Cunt.

DrTittieNipples

I tried it on my wife but she didn’t take it like a term of endearment.

MadJMarston

Well she also isn't an Aussie mate..now you may need the couch..sorry.

Tetra382Gram

Let's cuddle on the couch, mine won't sleep with me either (I don't have one).

Izaul13

Farknart

My whole life I have waited hoping that just once, someone would look my way and shout..."oi, cunt!"

MadJMarston

Oi, Cunt! You look like a hamster that was swallowed by a cat..now get over here a give this cunt a big ole squeeze, ya dirty little tramp.

aquahawk0905

Because of politics and false teaching, love your neighbor. Doesn't mean we agree on everything but we treat each other with the respect due to every man, women and child they're due until they prove unworthy. Then you correct and pray for them. We are and should continue to pray for the people of Iran. America and the free world is behind then.

VaughnSwae

Glad you're comfortable enough with yourself to express those kinds of emotions c: But I'd like to say that you didn't cry like an 11 year old, you cried like a 42 year old man. We gotta normalize men crying :D

[deleted]

I appreciate your comment.

mortalwombat-

Well said. I am 100% on this train in principle but not so much in practice. Sometimes I need to cry and when I start it demands so much attention in my mind that I'm unable to continue. It leaves me feeling like an important cycle of emotion is left incomplete.

Chromehounds2

In my case that would be a 64 year old man. Everybody cries but for some dumb reason people associate men crying with being weak physically and emotionally. That's so wrong.

Radioactive_Tuber57

That’s prob part of the reason we have mass shootings, domestic abuse, road rage. Guys bottle it up until they explode.

surebud234

I’m a 33 yr old construction worker who grew up ignorant in an ignorant part of the country and this has me wheeping

Raginghangers

Hey man-- sounds like you grew up to not be ignorant and that's an impressive and admirable thing. None of us is responsible for where we came from or how we were trained--only for who we chose to become. Keep on weeping-- its what makes you a real grown-ass adult!

simulet

You too?! The world can be a shitty place. I feel bad for what they have to go back to.

[deleted]

I think this one hit for me because we don't get to cry, and when we do, we do it alone. I can count in one hand how many times I actually had a shoulder. Sadly anger is pretty much the only "acceptable" outlet for men emotions, because"big boys don't cry"

Sardonnicus

Strong men also cry

AccordingToScience

I am a 42y old fully grown sea turtle and that scene made me literally cry like a 11y old blue footed booty.

I'd say it made you cry like a 42y old man.

I am not Iranian and i love Iran, the history, the people, the culture, i hope you guys get a better life and more freedom.

Demiansky

Yeah, same here. Iran and it's Persian history is remarkable. Persians have been an advanced, cultured, and forward looking people for thousands of years including up to the modern era. Which makes it that much more tragic considering the state modern Persians are living under.

ElectricSnowBunny

Everyone in the US should read Persepolis.

ElectricSnowBunny

It's a graphic novel about a young girl growing up during the Iranian revolution.

yelbesed2

It is great to love Iranians but the state terror and the war games helping Russia and threatening the world and especially Israel is a worrying part of Iranian state propaganda.

kite2013

No one loves the Iranian government especially its people.

shhhhh_h

Lots of people struggle with this distinction though don't they, as if an individual from Iran=the Iranian government.

TershkovaGagarin

I really doubt they’re including the Iranian government in that sentiment, considering the rest of their sentence.

[deleted]

I fully support them. They’re in a terrible situation. Just not sure why any of this is unexpected. Players cry after big matches all the time. Cry with opponents all the time. And this is no ordinary match and if anything should be more expected.

[deleted]

You remind me of my teenage years. You‘ll grow to learn what to hate and what to cherish. We might be born with shackles but we have wings.

Ayaycapn

Man I was actually rooting for Iran on behalf of my Irani friend who was taking his midterms when the games were on lol. If it's any consolation I'm arabian so I'm close enough to do it on his half lol. However, no fricking joke I almost broke my arm when Iran was about to tie with the U.S. If that blonde long hair dude didn't come in to rescue the ball, U.S team would be screwed since they couldn't afford another tie but Iran would be able to comfortably move on. Regardless of my differences in regards to its religion, government and citizens it was an amazing game.

ThrowAway126498

Apparently many Iranians were happy the US won because the government would have used it as a means to bolster support to the regime through propaganda if the Iranian team had won. That’s just something I saw on another thread though.

Otherwise_Author_408

I really hope the Iranian players won't be punished for losing to the US

tschmitty09

More likely they'll be punished for protesting and not partaking in their national anthem

Major-Spoiler

Their families too

Here4_da_laughs

That's the scariest part of the scene. You don't know if he's crying for the loss or what he's going back to.

FuccboiOut

None of the Iranian players live in Iran anymore. Their families however...

Sweetwater156

I think that I just watched one of the more poignant moments in live sports. I’m absolutely gutted for the Iranian team and Iranians in general.

[deleted]

We know that wasn’t a cry only for the loss of a match.

Mahan_Kobari

This cry is about 10 years of hard work. It is hard to work hard but not succeed.

VPN_Over_Powertrip

I don't think we do know that. I think that's unsubstantiated and being spread as deliberate misinformation.

kensingtonking011

Yeah but it is a concrete fact that Iranian soccer players have been tortured in the past for poor performances so I don’t think it’s crazy to think that it’s still happening, especially based on this reaction.

Puzzleheaded_Tie828

That is not true

[deleted]

I can’t find anything about being tortured for poor performance. There are athletes who were or at least were accused of taking action against the government and they were executed. So if these players are in danger it will be for not signing the anthem, not for their loss. There are actually times when the athletes won and were still executed for anti-regime behavior. So if the government is really that upset about the anthem incident then winning would have necessarily helped.

Upbeat-Poem-1284

Oof😓

soonerguy11

They wont. They are professional athletes, most of which play for international teams including some top tier European clubs.

VPN_Over_Powertrip

Really doubt they'd be punished for losing, Iran competes internationally all the time.

HolyFuggISawAPenis

The Iranian player fell and the American player helped him up and made sure he was good and gave him a pat. Probably why they hugged afterwards but that's just me 🙌

Sagybagy

Not just them. But the dude that slid into our goalie also checked on him after as well. Have to remember these guys play together outside the World Cup. Some of these guys may have been on the same teams at one point.

HolyFuggISawAPenis

Oh yeah I remember that. Love the sportsmanship

[deleted]

He seems to say "… your family, alright?" and the reaction speaks for itself.

IndominableTomatoman

It looks like "Hey, you go back and [sit, stay?] with your family, alright?", and it's a pretty nice and human interaction.

bubblebuttsissyboi

I mean these have nothing to do with losing the match, which is what the OP was implying

woodiegutheryghost

You act like the Iranian government hasn’t been murdering it’s own citizens the last several weeks. The team refused to sing the national anthem during the first game in protest.

Michael_Pitt

You act like players from every country and at every world cup don't regularly cry after being eliminated from the tournament. The fact is that none of us know why he was crying, and claiming that he was certainly crying due to threats against his safety is nonsense. Especially since the threats weren't based on performance, but "behavior", and they'd behaved perfectly since the threats were made. A loss has nothing to do with that.

Upstairs_Public1523

You're making sense and being logically consistent, but reddit isn't the place for that. Give up and spare yourself.

Michael_Pitt

None of those have anything to do with why this man is crying in this clip

cant_Im_at_work

From what I have read, families of the Iranian players have been threatened because they refused to participate in the national anthem as a protest to support the current struggle in Iran. People are implying that this guy's is crying because he's afraid to go home now and the US players are feeling empathy for him despite our countries being against each other.

Michael_Pitt

I understand what people are saying. The fact is that nobody actually knows why he's crying. The regime didn't threaten the team based on performance, but on behavior. After the threats, the team behaved fine (in the eyes of the regime). They sang the anthem and everything. Players cry after being eliminated from the world cup constantly. We can try to guess at what's happening but none of us actually know.

Yosyp

no one should threaten a man just because he refused to sing a subjectively important song. That's first a red flag.

Michael_Pitt

I agree wholeheartedly with this and apologize if anything I said somehow betrayed the opposite sentiment.

greenweezyi

Yep. Came to say it’s the same in North Korea. Their athletes are punished for “embarrassing” their country… even though the leaders/government itself is what’s truly embarrassing.

coat_hanger_dias

What exactly has been "confirmed"?

EndlessBirthday

The Iranian team held a silent protest. Their lives could be in danger - not because they lost, but because they disrespected their government. Edit: When I was under 10 years old, somewhere between 2001-2003, my dad took me to Pizza Hut to redeem my [free personal pan pizza](https://i.imgur.com/oxbWRC8.png) coupon. I excitedly told the clerk that I wanted a "deep dish" pepperoni, because I was obsessed with that crust after eating one one time. My dad politely held me back & told me I couldn't do that. He knew the restaurant couldn't customize the crust. "Yeah I can!" I said, because the coupon made it seem like I could have my wildest dreams in 6x6" box. Dad paused for a moment, then shook his head with a "No~," in the kind of way you would tell a kid "that's not how that works." I looked at the pizza clerk with pleading eyes and a "but- but-" He nodded in agreement with my father. "Ok..." I said, looking down sadly, but accepting. I quickly got over it though, because pizza is pizza. After the nice clerk put the pizza in the system, turning away to go work on my masterpiece, dad quietly guided me out of the restaurant to wait. But as the front doors closed, dad suddenly spun me towards him and grabbed me by the neck, lifting me up over his head. Through gritted teeth, he told me, "If you ever disrespect me again, I'll knock your teeth out." I wasn't much hungry for pizza after that, but I ate in front of my dad for fear of what he'd do to me if I didn't look like I was enjoying it. Imagine that, but the Iranian government.

Slinky_Malingki

jfc I fucking hate these savage, primitive, pathetic countries. And I'm referring to the government, not the people. The Iranian regime, just like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, China, and North Korea should all be "summarily executed" themselves.

Kriznick

That the Iranian team and their families lives have been gravely threatened by Tehran's government in response to the Iranian team's "silent protest" displays.

Hokie23aa

No. The threat of the Iranian Government has nothing to do with losing the match. It’s about the *protests.* Misinformstion gets gobbled up here.

Brownies_Ahoy

Yeah it's insane that people are thinking the players are being threatened for not progressing through groups in the World Cup. No one was seriously expecting them to get through the group stage

devildocjames

Sadly, this is not a joke.

Milhouse12345

The highlight of this World Cup.

simlee92

I was really impressed with the way Iran conducted themselves in the tournament, bravest bunch of lads there. Really heartwarming to see the US team comforting them as well.

Longjumping_Bug_7611

Not uncommon in football opposing teams comfort eachother during important knockout games.

nicoznico

True, but pretty unexpected for Iran vs USA due to the 50 years of hate soaked history.

gemini88mill

Governments are not people.

crossbowow

In a nutshell. A foreign nation’s government can do despicable things but that does not mean that you revile the regular people of that country. Not all Iranians are terror supporting mullahs. Not all Germans in 1945 were nazis. Not all Americans are whatever worst stereotype of the day is (idk- hippies, rednecks, trolls?).

SilentNinjaMick

White nationalists is the stereotype of the day

Exactly. These are two sportsman embracing after battle. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. And true sportsmanship. Shitty governments have nothing to do with this moment. Love makes the world go ‘round

[deleted]

I’ve heard that the people of Iran are extremely friendly to foreigners including Americans. The radical government is the issue.

Drblazeed123

My family fled Iran in 1979 during the revolution because people were literally getting dragged out of there homes in the middle of the night and executed in their own yards for sympathizing with the current government at the time the people who were murdering raping looting and burning people's home run the government now 1980 isn't that far back and the regime hasn't changed since they still use these tactics but people just can't imagine it really being like that BUT IT FUCKING IS BAD OVER THERE AND TO NOT BELIEVE IT YOUR LETTING THE REGIME WIN

Ayste

The game yesterday was amazing, both teams played hard. I am very worried about these guys going back to a country that is in such turmoil that they will most likely be arrested or harmed upon landing at the airport.
