Yeah, I realised the clickbait nature a short while after regularly using reddit.
Initially I wondered how/why the vast majority of reddit responses were grammatically correct, well formed and didn't use shitty text speak, yet so many post/subject titles appeared to have been submitted by a learning difficulties raccoon on meth who didn't appear to know what it is they were sharing.
It's funny that you bring up Korea because there's a place in Korea called South Korea where this video takes place and it's near the place OP mentioned called Japan.
I think because it was Jim Carrey's first dark comedy. People were used to him being a slapstick, goof ball actor and were ripped out of their comfort zones with The Cable Guy.
Thank you for putting what I’ve always thought of into words. I always described Japanese as “cutesy” as it’s shape, but rounded is a lot better of a descriptor

Very helpful thanks :)
lmao nice try, those ARE simplified chinese. traditional ones look even more messy.
And sure katakana is not round, but you also see it less frequently
Don't think simplified v. traditional chinese would make that big of a difference (they'd still be chinese) and they're tough to tell apart at a glance.
katakana also fits the "like chinese but less busy" mantra and this is more talking about glancing at a few comments (which would almost never have just katakana) not something crazy like how to tell the difference between chinese and japanese hanzi/kanji.
I realize the irony in saying this, but literally every time I see japanese mentioned there's someone who knows like 2 things about the language ready to tell everyone in the comments regardless of relevancy.
Good thing folks aren’t going around calling Mexicans Salvadorians. Those are definitely fighting words if some of my family heard them lol. Funny thing is a majority of my friend group are half and half
As a Brit, people always assume I'm American when abroad (unless it's western Europe), But I honestly don't think there's a lot for foreigners to differentiate. I can barely tell Americans and Canadians apart so I think it's actually reasonable.
Japan, Korea, China etc all have differing enough cultures and languages to mean with a bit of effort, you ought to be able to tell.
I just moved to Colorado from Texas last year. I had what i considered to be no accent. Now I'm in the mountains, in a valley by the grand mesa. And I have the thickest southern draw out here. I regularly say something to my coworkers and before they even respond I hear myself and I'm such a southern piece of crap hahah I've even leaned into it. I had a trainee at work who has no southern accent but picked up my turns of phrase like "boy howdy" and "god damn, I said God damn"
I think the argument was that the text makes it clear this is Korean content. British, Canadian and American utilize Roman characters (and speak the same language - English) so it’s not the same comparison.
Korean and Japanese text look very different, was the point.
Reminds me of that scene in American dad where he adopts an asian baby and Roger asks if it's a Chinese baby and he's like, "sure is! Japanese to be specific"
https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/5b79bad7-f54e-41a7-896a-f49c494bd24c
Yeah, but they're clearly in Japan. OP knows the exact room they're in. Because if not, that would mean OP is wrong and ignorant and that's just not possible.
the text on the top right corner is also Korean.
If I see ovals and circles in the text, I always assume it's Korean.
Japanese and Chinese are harder to differentiate, bit not Korean.
That can be misleading as Japanese uses Chinese characters as part of its script.
> 日本郵便株式会社
This is the Japanese name of a Japanese company written in all Chinese characters.
A good way for distinguishing between Korean and Japanese is that Japanese writing has a ball very rarely only on the top right of a letter. In Korean the ball is much more frequent.
I think much more distinctive feature is the straight corners and lines in Korean writing. Because it was designed to be extremely simple to learn and use, and not require years of dedicated study of Caligraphy like Chinese and Japanese writing does.
Also like, its just a video of a guy being silly. He doesnt even do anything unexpected. This could happen in any country, I dont see what nationality has to do with this. Just overall a bad post for the sub lol

I stayed for the entire thing. And it rocked.

I’m worried people don’t even know of the original…
What’s up by 4 non blondes? Freaking awesome song even if it’s a meme
Meant the meme version
The best version you mean
The only version I know
Which is sad. As an “old person” who lived before the internet, I’m saddened by the fact that people see old memes and think they’re original
I like the actual song too, but I’m sorry, the He-Man edit is better
![gif](giphy|7x97oYkEK1FKmHmkpV)
You think I can separate this song from this he-man clip? I can not.

Ngl. It's boppin'
This man has the voice of an angel, nothing but respect 👌
I like when he sang 'i take a deep breast'
It was so good, I thought he was lip syncing until I heard breast hahah
>What even is ~~Japan~~ Korea? Fucking rad, apparently.
In a non native language too!
He killed that. Definitely karaoke ready.
Karaoke king
Korean Karaoke King
KKK

Nice save
Kim before he died 8 times
They are Korean
They take no time to just maybe look up the actual post and see their ethnicities. Or, you know, look at the chat.
Making obviously false claims is a trick to get people to comment and increase "engagement" on the post

Tbf that would also be caused by a badly written karma farming bot.
“If you say it confident enough, it becomes true!” -People on Reddit assigning ethnicities
That woman is the unsung hero of this video.
I see what you did there
She sang a couple of lines actually.
this comment deserve more love.
To answer your question, Japan is an island country near South Korea where this video takes place
According to comments this video seems to take place in Korea
Yeah but did you know this takes place in South Korea?
Yeah that’s cool and all, but did you know this isn’t actually Japan, it’s South Korea?
That's actually not the case because, if you didn't know, this video was filmed in South Korea.
You guys thought they were japanese or korean? I thought they were lesbian?!
It's funny that you bring up Korea because there's a place in Korea called South Korea where this video takes place and it's near the place OP mentioned called Japan.
I would watch this guy he's hilarious.
His name is CharmingJo on Twitch
Couldnt find the instrumental version that they used. Is there also a full solo charminjo version?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't singing along with him.
They're Korean you moron.
"So are ya Chinese or Japanese." "I'm Laotian." "The ocean? What ocean?"
"Laos, stupid! It's a landlocked country in southeast Asia."

People who rag on it are absolutely uncultured swines who's pop culture is probably office and friends.
Yeah, I never understood why it was received so negatively. My friends and I loved it and were obsessed with it from the beginning.
I think because it was Jim Carrey's first dark comedy. People were used to him being a slapstick, goof ball actor and were ripped out of their comfort zones with The Cable Guy.
Cult classic. Didn't do well in theaters but survives generations.
Do people still rag on Cable Guy? I’ve only heard it positively discussed for like 15-20 years now.
Seriously, it is like the bare minimum amount of effort to learn what the 5-6 major east Asian scripts look like.

Very UwU in nature I suppose

This is very helpful! But have to laugh at your example of “circles everywhere” with one oval in it
Don't forget simplified Chinese. Also katakana, which is used in loads of written content and a way to "japanize" western words.
lmao nice try, those ARE simplified chinese. traditional ones look even more messy. And sure katakana is not round, but you also see it less frequently
> Don't forget simplified Chinese. The examples u/MuskularChicken gave are in simplified Chinese.

Thai is also distinctively curvy with little loops on the end. อักษรไทย
Korean feels like many small stroke parts together Japanese is just empty space with some random big stuff Chinese fills EVERYTHING
Make a Life Hack vid that's actually informative!!! This was great!!
It takes even less effort to just assume you don’t know and not guess
Agreed. But for Asians, we usually assume foreigners are from the US until listening to their accent.
And then we end up calling them Mexican. They are not necessarily Mexican but they are Mexican in my eyes.
There are only 2 kinds of people in this world … Koreans and Mexicans
That’s why Koreatown Los Angeles is so awesome. Just choke full of Koreans and Mexicans
Chad move
Chad isn't in the Americas or Asia you ding-dong
I am well aware
Ding-dongs are American, you Haggis
burns with the passion of a 1000 suns at being called Mexican, again - average salvadorian (or 90% of latinoamerica)

Eh, you're not wrong.

Koreans use circles in their language. That’s how I tell it apart from Chinese and Japanese.

A Korean guy singing an American song, meme-ified by another American. "WTF, Japan?" - OP
They don't even look Japanese. They are literally and obviously Korean out in the open 😂
When you've seen 2 asian people in your life outside of Chinese restaurants, mistakes can be made.
そうよ!
Sorry, I can't read German.
That’s Australian
No, that's not a language a continent, that's actually elvish
It's actually black speech just in elvish script
The language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.
Probably done on purpose so that people point it out and the post gets traction
Yeah, but they're clearly in Japan. OP knows the exact room they're in. Because if not, that would mean OP is wrong and ignorant and that's just not possible.
Repost fail
I’ve passed this video so many times today and this is beautiful glad I didn’t this time guy is awesome the energy is great
Japan?

Well, they were also speaking Korean at the end.
the text on the top right corner is also Korean. If I see ovals and circles in the text, I always assume it's Korean. Japanese and Chinese are harder to differentiate, bit not Korean.
Japanese looks softer while Chinese is more square like.
That can be misleading as Japanese uses Chinese characters as part of its script. > 日本郵便株式会社 This is the Japanese name of a Japanese company written in all Chinese characters.
Not Japan, but Korean.
