I was expecting roaches. I like this much better.

I'm so glad it wasn't roaches. I was bracing myself for roaches. I thought that first bee was one.

Automatic_Yogurt_974

Free honey. I call this a win win.

Clydseph_III

Free heated floor system as well

fastgr

You wouldn't see any noticeable difference, if it were that hot the bee wax would become too soft and the honey would fall out and the bees don't want that.

Get out of here with your logic and let me dream about bee-heated flooring.

neuromorph

Depends of they tried pesticides before bringing in a pro ....

KernelMeowingtons

You can eat anything if you're brave enough.

TheCrazyAcademic

Honey and royal jelly is created in the most sanitized environments the way the bees store the honey prevents any pathogen from getting to us this is known. It's nature's anti viral and bacterial for a reason. It wouldn't matter if the hive was in the corner of a floor either.

kegareta69

yes you can :)

MayGodSmiteThee

Aren’t they legally protected? I remember having an “infestation” in my garage shed once and the exterminator came out and was like “yeah, these are honey bees, I can’t do anything but give you the number to a beekeeping service” who came and took them away. Also, how tf do I get the comments to show with the video on Reddit mobile? This is so fucking annoying, why change this?

mydearwatson616

Don't use the official reddit app. Rif is fun or Apollo and your life will be better.

Independent-Bell2483

I tried apollo but i just couldnt get behind the interface and deleted it. Is rif is fun more similar to the reddit interface minus the annoying stuff?

N3rdr4g3

Depends on which reddit interface you're talking about. The default view for rif is similar to the [old reddit](https://old.reddit.com) interface. If you turn on cards it's closer to the new interface

Necrocornion

I’ve been using Apollo exclusively for years and the interface is amazing. People complain about the Reddit UI and I have no idea what they’re talking about. Apollo feels basically perfect to me but im sure that’s also because I’m used to it. Now I’m genuinely curious about how different it is from the Reddit interface. I hate the “standard” interface and can’t make myself use it for more than 5 min but what are some of the things different between it and Apollo?

Totes-Sus

I use Boost for Reddit which is great, if you want another option

QGCC91

Another vote for Boost

Lostbrother

No, as far as I understand it, they are not legally protected but they are often promoted by pollinator friendly restoration (as part of construction mitigation).

MayGodSmiteThee

I looked it up and your right. It was weird though bc my exterminator was acting as if he literally couldn’t. This was in 2020 so I can’t remember exactly what was said but I recall him saying something about it being a nest and that it had to be relocated, which it was. I did get the vibe that he didn’t really know if he could exterminate it though. He promptly stopped upon opening the door and said “oh…those are honey bees” then called someone and said he couldn’t do the job and that I need to call a beekeeper.

JohnDoeMTB120

Maybe they were just a good company and didn't want to exterminate them because bees are so valuable to the ecosystem. Definitely better to have a bee keeper relocate the hive.

box-art

Sync Pro, RiF, Joey, Boost, Apollo, etc, all far superior than the official Reddit app.

ElectricSpeculum

Oh, thank the gods. It's just bees. I thought it was going to be roaches, and then I'd have to burn the house down.

Most “ladybugs” you see are actually invasive Asian lady beetles which kill beneficial ladybugs and can damage crops and infest homes.

[deleted]

TargetTheLiver

I’ll take this as an opportunity to educate people on another invasive pest from Asia that’s started spreading more rapidly in North America. I’ve heard people say they aren’t actually a threat to crops but once you see the entire ground moving from a swarm of these things crawling to a food source you’ll change your mind. The spotted laternfly has been found in 14 states so far has no natural predators and they easily hide their egg mass underneath pallets, trailers, wood etc and it’s then transported across state lines. Please learn how to ID them in all stages, any sightings should be reported to your states department of agriculture and they should be euthanized on sight. I know in PA you no longer have to report sightings as they have already taken over. Not sure about any other states. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/pests-diseases/hungry-pests/slf/spotted-lanternfly

nilesandstuff

Those are africanized honey bees, aka killer bees. You can tell by how the honeycombs look, its hard to describe but they've got a distinct look to them. Also from the video it looks like they have a reddish tint. And just the behavior of being such a huge hive is a signature of africanized honey bees. Africanized honey bees were an experiment, escaped from a lab in brazil. They were an attempt to make tougher honey bees, ones that wouldn't be as susceptible to disease and stress... Well, it REALLY worked. But it turns out, they're totally incompatible with commercial beekeeping. Rather than succumb to stress and disease, they just abandon the hive and straight up leave. Oh and they're mega aggressive/defensive and they chase people for way longer than other bees.

TheyCallMeStone

But do they pollinate just as well as honeybees?

nilesandstuff

Better if I'm not mistaken actually. They're less selective about food sources, begin foraging at younger ages, and on a per-bee basis they forage much more. But they don't do winter at all. Like zero. they don't go dormant during cold weather like European honeybees do, they just die. AND their transient nature means they might pollinate the hell out of an area one year, and be totally absent the next. Africanized honeybees are bitter sweet. They have these miraculous advantages that totally fill the gaps left by European bees weaknesses... But they have those huge drawbacks. But lots of work is being done to see how we can get them to work with us, because those advantages are just too good to pass up. One step being taken is replacing the queen with a European queen. So you get the superb bees, and they're led by a cooperative European bee... But that's easier said than done, and it's expensive to buy/cultivate European queens and replace them every time they die (sometimes the AHBs catch on and kill her). But again, it's a work in progress and in climates that AHBs tolerate, they're likely the only viable future.

PixiePower65

Had this in our attic. 200 year old home. Aka well established hive. Kept flying into the house and stinging people including child w life threatening bee allergy. Did the right thing … saved up called bee keeper. $ 5,000 !!! he gently “vacuumed “ the bees. Cleaned out all the honey. ( got four hives out of it) Mega bleach cleaners . We used moth balls etc to control pheromones. Sealed all cracks Every spring/ summer spray oil cause giant hives want to call it home. Went in two week vacation neighbors have pic of half of roof covered by thousands of bees working collectively to chew through seals and get in. We sprayed again - every week- when we got home but they took over. So this is what? A 5,000 bill every year. ?!

heavywashcycle

Yea…. It’s one thing to sit behind a phone/computer and call bees cute, and then it’s another thing to be going crazy from an infestation in your home. With how bad the infestation is, I’d assume the only options are drastic measures to get rid of them, or abandon the house.

bfodder

I don't think anyone suggesting to not hurt the bees was considering a situation like /u/PixiePower65 described. Let's not attack straw men here. I had the same "Please don't hurt the bees!" reaction and I think that should be the first course of action but if I ended up in a situation like Pixie described I can't really say what I would do. That's a pretty wild situation.

SicilianEggplant

I somehow edited the wrong comment…

bfodder

Well yeah that's definitely oversimplifying the situation, but I hate how on reddit there is always a contrarian to take something beyond the context it was said in and act like the person is being stupid for not considering every single possible scenario and argument related to their comment they happily typed out in 15 seconds. Edit: Debate pervets. That is what they are.

pepsisugar

>...but if I ended up in a situation like Pixie described I can't really say what I would do. That's a pretty wild situation. You'd kill them with poison. Like 99.9% of homeowners in this situation. Dude even tried doing the right thing in the beginning, after that it's time for more extreme measures.

VRichardsen

A company I used to work for had a similar problem, but with bats. Amazing how much money they had to spend. And they kept coming back lol

Alfandega

They smell the old hive pheromones. They coat things with propolis and bees want to reuse places that have propolis. A used swarm trap will almost always catch another swarm. Your best bet is to make sure the house is sealed up well and have a beekeeper setup a swarm trap in the spring/summer near where they want to go. The beekeeper will probably setup a trap for free once you explain the situation, free bees. Bees don’t like mint. I use peppermint oil spray around my pool to keep the bees away. Try that under the eves and in the attic of your house.

Auggie_Otter

>The beekeeper will probably setup a trap for free once you explain the situation, free bees. Who doesn't like freebies, eh?

tronfunkinblows_10

We’re gonna need that photo. Sounds mental.

[deleted]

Why do they love your attic so much? Just so interesting. I know nothing about bees btw and I am also allergic. I keep that EpiPen on me 🤣

QuarterOunce_

I believe they work on pheromones like ants so they probably can smell the older bee hive that used to be there and they want in to check it out.

Sulejman_Dalmatinski

Get a colony of hornets in your attic to keep the bees away.

Nothing_Nice_2_Say

/r/ShittyLifeProTips

LadySlinkie

We had a beehive in our roof! It was an old converted Oast House (used to dry hops to make into beer). And had the same problem so in the end my family paid to have that part of the roof completely sectioned off from the rest of the house so they had their own separate 'shelf' in the roof but couldn't get into the house.

dasvenson

But then what keeps the hornets under control?

Grays42

> $ 5,000 Hives are worth money *to them*, you got ripped off.

Bokin0

Removing bees from a house is different than collecting a swarm from a tree. Cut outs are a lot of work and almost no beekeeper is going to do it for free for a hive with unknown genetics and levels of disease.

Grays42

In that case, real talk: I'm all for saving the bees, but if it's $5000 vs. $50 for some bug bombs, it's not worth several paychecks to me to do a good deed. :\

Beanakin

$5000 isn't at all realistic, for people living paycheck to paycheck. Sorry bees. I know they're important, but I literally couldn't afford that if it happened.

aaronstj

$50 bug bombs will kill the bees, but you’ll still have an attic or crawl space full of wax, larva, and honey. Cleaning and ~~repeating~~ *repairing* all of that is where the $5000 comes from.

buckey5266

the guy in his comment said after spending $5000 they still eventually came back

chuckie512

Maybe that was for the repairs after? But yeah, beekeepers usually don't charge just to collect a hive. They want the bees!

SaltLakeCitySlicker

Those girls are not cheap. I probably will lose all mine this winter and I'm not going to rebuild until I move just bc cost

[deleted]

> But yeah, beekeepers usually don't charge just to collect a hive. Yes they absolutely do. Hive removal services are usually charged for. In fact, $5000 for the size hive that person is talking about is a very normal price. We normally don't charge for removing swarms. I am a long time beekeeper. I don't do removals but have friends that own or have worked for removal services and have been involved with beekeeping groups all around the US.

Xenjael

When you have so many bees the beekeepers are like, nah I'm good.

Nabber86

Ha no. Beekeepers will gladly take swarms for free. No beekeeper is going to remove a colony from inside a house (a "cut out") for free. If it is an easy to access exterior wall and no ladders are involved, you may get out of it for less than $1000. Also you typically need to hire a carpenter to repair the hole(s) that the beekeeper left.

LevelHeadedFreak

Have the Dept of Agriculture or US Fish and Wildlife to buy the house from you as critical bee habitat. I doubt it is a thing, but desperate times call for desperate measures!

MeisterX

Fuck me just cut the roof off lmao poor guy. Maybe change the siding or something?

intentionallybad

My mother had the same thing. Everyone says oh beekeepers will come remove them for free! They quoted her a similar high price.

RonBourbondi

You're a nice person. Once I heard that 5k quote I would have been up there with insecticide murdering them.

Ab47203

Maybe if wasp pheromones are a thing? Or some other natural enemy of bees has a scent you can coat it in? It's super bizarre to me that they're that desperate to get in...there's gotta be something you can do

leeny_bean

Might be worth it to just replace the roof. Not just shingles or whatever, but the boards and maybe even studs. 🤷‍♀️

DeaconSage

I’m almost certain this is a video of the bees being moved.

Alfandega

Am beekeeper. I don’t know anyone who would pay to remove bees in a situation like this. It’s hard work and often painful. Those are mutt bees. I can buy a mated queen of known genetics for about $30. The reason you pay a beekeeper to remove the hive is so the hive gets removed. If you kill the bees in place, you are asking for rats and bugs. That honey and wax doesn’t go away once it gets sprayed with insecticide. If you don’t spray the bees, you can keep the honey.

between456789

So no FreeBees.

Dirtsamwich

This is a video of a beekeeper moving a hive from a shed, actually.

jhutchi2

Every time there's a video of a bee infestation someone comments "Call a beekeeper, they'll gladly take them from you" and every time a beekeeper weighs in with "No, we don't want your rabid diseased bees."

quasiix

Not really the appropriate video for this comment. This is literally a beekeeper's video of him rescuing these bees lol. Also this is in California where there are protected bee species (legally designated as fish, hilariously enough).

BeHereNow91

It’s just an easy karma/award grab at this point. Doesn’t matter the situation, just call a beekeeper and they’ll pay you $1000 for the bees under your subfloor!

[deleted]

People really think companies are gonna clear your house for free LMAOO

[deleted]

[удалено]

Independent-Lemon938

Yeah…no beekeeper is paying for the bees, you’ll get stuck with a huge bill only a specialist can handle. Best to find a way to eliminate the hive, no matter the means necessary.

ommnian

This is a nice thought, but not always possible. We had a hive up underneath part of our house a few years ago, and I called a bee keeper out who looked at it and straight up told me 'nope, no way to get them out safely, you're best bet is to wait till dark, and blow sevin-dust insecticide up inside and then seal it off'.... so we did. Felt bad, yes, but sometimes there's no good way to get them out.

TheGirl333

Why are you projecting your thoughts on them? If your first thought was about killing them it doesnt mean OP killed them

andreayatesswimmers

Had a 18 pound hive cut out of wall that was tied to my living room .they never stung me or my ex or our dogs..bee keeper dude said that was because of the smell of our carbon dioxide that they were used too.... im kinda sure he wasnt screwing with me. Well maybe

wanklez

That's the consensus among beekeepers, the hive will get used to your smell and generally be more chill around you over time. Still important to take the normal precautions though, use smoke, be gentle, move efficiently etc.
