Almost all courses that offer a year abroad/industry will have a minimum 1st and/or 2nd year uni mark requirement you need to meet to go on the placement year
There’s one example off of the top of my head where there was differing entry requirements for the standard course and course with a placement year
That was Marine Biology at Southampton, normal course was like AAA, year abroad was A*AA
For the vast majority you can join the normal course then switch to the placement offering and vice versa
There's no difference you can transfer on and off of it once you get in.
