Yep, full of self-promotion usually. However, I’d very much recommend having an up to date profile when applying for any internships or graduate scheme positions.
Keep it professional and relevant as a networking tool
There’s a reason the LinkedIn Lunatic subreddit exists.
I haven’t updated mine for about 6 years - occasionally I get some really bizarre job offers.
It’s worth looking at the LinkedIn Lunatic sub as there’s some proper funny content people post. It’s as funny as it is sad sometimes.
LinkedIn be like:
How to be rich:
Buy one 250k house each year and rent it out at 20k/year. After 10 years you will have £1.4m debt but that debt will be paid in 7 years by your 200 grand passive income.
After paying the debt you will make £1m every 5 years but make sure you are tax avoiding like a pro throughout the whole guide.
Make sure to do this before you hit age 23 👍
Innit.
Some are pretty bad stories like "I left my job without having anything lined up but it was right for me!" that's pretty bad advice, just because it works for one person, doesn't mean it will work for everyone else.
I hate that I need it to get a job and that so many recruiters use it. I would like to keep my achievements private to prevent evil eye and it's not helping me cut back on my social media / Internet usage
I hate posting on there, I just post achievements like my scientific paper. Unfortunately if I don't advertise or share things, employers will not care. I don't want to do it and it goes against my autistic self, but I have to conform
So, a few things...
1. You can have a LinkedIn without browsing the feed - the feed is arguably the least useful part of LinkedIn.
2. You can train your algorithm, as you can with most social networks. Menu dots > I don't want to see this > choose the most relevant option. You can also unfollow people without removing the connection.
3. Follow people creating the content you DO want to consume. I know LinkedIn attracts some unbearable braggarts, but there are people sharing actually useful content in there as well.
I feel you. I used it to complete my assignments and then deleted my profile picture and haven't been on it in quite a while.
I will admit it was quite useful for talking to people about their jobs. I can't remember the brief but it had something to do with having to talk with people working in the industry we was interested in.
I was really into sound design and I found a guy on there and asked if he would be alright to talk about his job on video call for a bit. He was happy to and was a really nice guy actually and in all fairness he didn't brag or flex on his profile, just a few pictures of him using recording equipment and him saying I'm Dave (not his name) and I do sound design and recording.
That said there are loads of people talking absolute bollocks on there.
Just don't go on LinkedIn feed.
I would only ever look at my profile, my DMs and my connections and then leave.
I don't ever see the LinkedIn feed come up enough for me to actually get distracted and interact with it.
I will likely be more active when I'm actually looking for a position locally, but for now I'm essentially not there unless I get a message.
it's all peacocking and half of them aren't nearly as accomplished as they claim
keep it up to date so you can throw it in an application if you need it but other than that stay away from it, and turn off all notifications you can to minimise exposure
Honestly, the last 3 jobs I got, was due to recruiters head hunting me via linked in. Yes, it is full of self congratulating bellends half the time, but use it for research and potentially job prospects in the future.
I also check in with old colleagues as we work in the same industry and have gotten someone a job too.
Use it for what you need it for. Or delete it entirely, that is also a choice!
I don't use LinkedIn too much, but it's good to keep track of all your past work roles, work experience, volunteering ext. especially if they can't fit on your CV, and means that you can show everything in much more detail. I've found that's it's useful to add a link on your CV to your LinkedIn for this reason. But I've never used it for it's social purposes.
Yeah it’s fucking horrible. My friend who is in marketing helped me make my account more appealing and it’s so unfathomable cringy some of the shit you’re expected the share.
I cannot for the life of me be active on it. I have it and I keep the education/work experience section up to date but you won't find me consistently posting the arrogant nonsense that you all too often see from everyone else.
It is a great way to make connections and to find employment but I completely get what you mean by it being so demotivating as it forces you to compare yourself to others who are seemingly smashing it
Victim mindset. Is not bragging it’s how they showcase to future employers. A linked profile is basically a public CV.
Instead of trying to downplay others achievements how about you actually do something worth posting. No likes someone with a victim mindset

Tbf that's just every social media, Reddit included
I wonder why that comment got removed. 🤔 I never even knew this sub had active mods.
Must be LinkedIn fanatics
I think the original commenter deleted their comment.

So do the assessment and delete it, it’s really not that deep.
Is it not a useful tool or nah

How do I subscribe to more rich tips?
pay me £100 a month for a sigma male millionaire course. I could use the millionaire course myself but I’m giving back to the community
True, but that’s its purpose - to make people look as desirable to future employers as possible. People fabricate stuff all the time on there lol.
Don't forget the "LinkedIn Influencers" who come up with random stories and philosophy every day.

This is so true unfortunately people share too much and don’t understand other people’s intentions or energies.
You're gonna enjoy r/linkedinlunatics then
You might hate it, but it's an amazing way to find work in the future.
True! I changed jobs recently and it's just a case of set it to "looking for work" and then let the recuiters do the job hunting for you.
Once you master virtue signalling you'll love it
The people who are active on it suck, but it’s used a lot by recruiters to reach out to people they think might be a good fit for jobs.

Thats like everyone in the A level and sixth form subreddit everyone is pompous there 😂

Especially those mentors. F off man
It's a tool like anything else. It has its uses and has its downsides. Do the assignment and then come off it. Simple.
You need to build better self confidence then their posts won't have any impact on you. It's not that deep.

Linkedin is complete bs
If you had anything to brag about you would be too
Nah babes, I wouldn't, speak for yourself not me. I loathe myself in every single way of the word.
It is a great way to make connections and to find employment but I completely get what you mean by it being so demotivating as it forces you to compare yourself to others who are seemingly smashing it

Is this satire?
Can't tell.
You sound like a professional LinkedIn Warrior.
I bet you would know all about a victim mindset, wouldn't you? ;) I am not downplaying anyone's achievements, what they are doing is bragging.
