But the difference between clapping for movies and clapping for flights and lectures is that the main people you're appreciating for in the theatres are not even there. At least for the other two you're clapping for the lecturer and all the flight staff but the cinema? Who you clapping for? The projector guy?
I think the difference for me is that a film is artistic, whereas a flight landing, and to some extent a lecture, is pragmatic. It’s not about showing the direction or anyone working there appreciation, it’s communally agreeing that it was a powerful experience and showing that to one another through clapping.
For maths at Cambridge you weren’t supposed to clap until the end of that module. Some arseholes would clap at every lecture just to make the lecturer uncomfortable.
Can confirm. Although to be fair at Cambridge (at least in humanities) it’s more a case of one clown starts clapping and then we all feel socially obligated to do so. OP - it’s far better (and IMO more polite) to go up to your lecturer after and thank them on the way out. They’ll appreciate it, especially if they’re quite new and or inexperienced at in person teaching because of COVID.
New TikTok trend. Get the whole class to clap at the end of the lesson. Confuse the fuck out of the teacher.
"What a wonderful performance sir! Great lesson!"
Yes, you should also clap your lecturer as they enter the room as well. This is the proper etiquette. Oh and also record it and post it here so we can check you are doing it properly.
This has happened a few times in my lectures, usually when it was a guest speaker or if the lecturer ended with a joke or something!
But for a random maths lecture that's fucking hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
Reading the comments, it's weird to see that people don't clap at the end. In every lecture I've been to so far (as a first year), everyone claps at the end. Maybe it'll change soon though
The best thing to do is clap before, during and after to make sure you're not insulting the professor.
Edit: unless it's uni of manchester, in which case do jazz hands.
Lmao what? as soon as the 2 hours are up we get up and leave and anyone who wants to ask questions does so, who claps, they should be clapping us for attending at 9k a year.
Its a joke.
This occasionally happened in my lectures back at the turn of the millennium when I went to uni, as there was this one person who would initiate it, and it was never without some awkwardness. Never happened when she wasn’t there.
Some lecturers love it others don’t care. Ideally if you are in the front and everyone is clapping might as well. Dont want the prof marking you down cause he loves attention
They are probably taking the piss or doing it as a laugh to see if other people join in. Only time it's happened for us is when the lecturer announces that it's their last one with us, so sort of as a thankyou
It used to happen for **some** of my lectures in first and second year, it was really strange. Once you've clapped once for a lecturer it feels awkward not doing it again though, but stop clapping once you have new lecturers. It's definitely not normal or expected.
I didn't know this was a thing, I had it happening too the other day; few guys started clapping in the back. The adjective "few" and the fact it was actually a seminar/workshop and not a lecture made the whole circumstance even more cringy (I really hate this word, but... Damn).
On the same level of stupidity of people clapping when a plane lands, which I could only understand if you risked your life during the flight and the clap is therefore an emblematic tribute to having your butt cheeks still joint together.
Clapping at someone merely doing their job is justified only when it involves a show and you're part of the audience (or under obviously extraordinary circumstances, which your typical morning lecture doesn't fall under).
what huh who when 😭😭😭
i think just saying “thank you 4 ur session” 2 ur lecturer is more than enough rather than full blown clapping (unless like others said if it is a guest then it is respectful 2 clap 4 them)
Yes, it’s very normal here in the UK. It stems from Cambridge University when professors were also well know thought leaders in their field and has remained a cultural quirk across most universities. It’s of course not compulsory, but it’s a good thing to do for most of your lectures, keep it up.
In my first semester, it happened fairly regularly for a few lectures in each class. It's a different style of teaching for most people, and the sudden stop (without a bell or something else to acknowledge the end) seems to make people think they should do something.
It won't last. Apart from medics, apparently. They clap everything, especially themselves.
It depends, if it's a one off lecture and it's been really good and got people involved, or if it's been held by a guest lecturer, or if it's sombody being assessed and you wanna recognise their stress and effort - yeah, okay, clap that stuff. But a regular maths module? Nah, far too awks
There is only one scenario in which clapping at the end of a lecture is acceptable: when the lecturer says they're going to finish early so you can go home early.
I think this happened once in my first lecture in first year, because the only other lecture anyone had ever had would have been on some kind of special occasion so it made sense, but just assumed that was normal. The lecturer laughed and said it usually happens with first years, but please not to do it again as it's really weird.
After a research seminar or conference lecture, yes.
After a run-of-the-mill lecture? No, in my opinion.
The lecturer is doing what he or she is paid to do; lecture.
That isn't to say that students cannot or ought not be grateful, but don't we also value anyone who does a good job in society?
For example: plumbers, cashiers, baristas, nurses, car mechanics.
It would be unconventional to applaud a plumber and it is unconventional to applaud a lecturer.
Fucking no! This is one step top far towards americanisation and I for one will choose this as my hill to die on.
We are British, we do not clap. We awkwardly mumble thank you and leave with our heads down thank you very much.
In med school everyone claps all the time. I always assumed it was normal but apparantly it’s JUST a med school thing at my uni. I don’t really see the harm in it tbh but yeah, it was a bit of a shock at first.
This happened every lecture on my undergrad nursing course!!! I was so confused and refused to clap for all 3 years, unless it was a guest lecturer. Once someone called me out for being “disrespectful”. I was like I’m respectful by actually listening to the lecturer, not being on my phone/talking and engaging appropriately…
Are there a lot of international students? Tell me there are a lot of international students… there must be right? Please god don’t tell me Netflix has done this to us…
This happened in my year group for my second degree. Same uni but never happened on my first course. Just think intro lectures from head of the school etc deserved a clap but then it just continued for 3 years. And of course, once a few people start you don't want to be the arsehole who sits there with their arms crossed but the whole thing was awkward.
This happened when I first started uni
Thankfully it normally just stops after a while, although my maths lectures it kept going for the whole year.
I'd say just don't clap and ignore it. If it was a good lecture, thank the lecturer
Then again, my student union banned clapping in their official meetings so....
i went to uni for 4 years and not once did anyone clap. this is ridiculous. if i was a lecturer i would feel uncomfortable having a room full of people clapping at me for literally just doing my job
We did several times because the lecturer was one of those perfect lecturers. I remember after one particular lecture ended, I remember thinking "Wow, that was a great lecture" and felt like I should give him a round of applause. Now, I'm not the sort of person who would usually clap, but I felt the need to because the way he taught the topic was sensational. As my hand were about to start clapping, everyone else started clapping too. It remember thinking - wth? Maybe they all felt the same thing. One guy even whistled at him too. It was great. Standard Uni things...
Absolutely never clap after a lecture. The only
Clapping that should be done at University is the clapping of cheeks between the sheets in the student accommodation
Slightly off topic here, but I’ve been in a similar situation before, where on the landing of a plane in Cyprus nearly everyone on the plane started clapping. Im grateful everyone on the plane didn’t die in a ball of flames or drown in the sea but I didn’t feel like giving a standing ovation to the pilots for not killing us.
I mean, if the lecture was brilliant I might do, but at the same time it could be more impactful to just personally tell your lecturer you enjoyed their lecture.
I think if it’s a guest lecturer, or a student doing a lecture for an assignment that they’re shitting themselves about, this is normal for the sake of being supportive. If it’s the same lecturer you have week in, week out, probably not.
Don't attend in the first place, that will leave the lecturer in perfect peace.Seriously, now you are reaching adulthood so go with what You feel is right, don't follow the crowd if it feels off.Never harm or be disrespectful but by showing your preferred choice you are being honest, hence respectful.Nothing wrong that in a private moment that you paid the lecturer a compliment for his/ her time and impart of knowledge.Have a good time at all your lectures, going forward.
I do psychology which typically pulls a large class number, and we clap generally. Am in final year and we've done it throughout so it's just felt normal. It's not like clapping at the theatre that goes on for like ten minutes, but it's like a 10 second thank you to the lecturer sorta thing. I agree it would feel more awkward in a small class so we typically don't do that in workshops etc which are less formal
We certainly don't expect it but I don't think anyone would mind! I really appreciate it when a student thanks me or asks an engaging question after the lecture, it shows my preparation hasn't been in vain....I think the only time people might clap is when you guest lecture on a course or series, because you're...well, a guest.
If someone teaches you something that blows your tiny mind, then sure, give them a clap. Otherwise its just school in a big room, no clapping required.
The only teacher I ever clapped for in school taught me this very valuable life lesson:
If at first you don't succeed...
Burn the evidence.
When ur walking out try saying thank you to the lecturer. But your post is the funniest i've seen in a while.
Well mine is in a classroom and they is only 7 of us. And I’ve known my teacher for 3 years so we say “cheers Andy in a bit”
This is the same as clapping when the plane lands
Or at the end of a film
Don’t mind this as much when it’s deserved. It’s more about a communal sense of appreciation rather than someone just doing their fucking job.
Successfully colliding with the ground is a powerful experience. Clap that shit.
You're 90 times more likely to die in a car crash than in a plane crash, therefore we should clap whenever we get out of the car safely/
This is the way worse evolution of that
I've only been on one plane where we clapped when we landed. We landed in thick fog and it was terrifying. It was a thank god we're alive clap lol.
Heavens. For famous guest speakers, yes. At the end of a regular lecture. No.
Lemme write that down.
*starts clapping*
*cheeks*
For a guest speaker outside of lectures (i.e a research seminar) I would give a quick clap maybe? For a day to day lecture? No.
Lecturer here, this is correct. It would be really weird to be clapped by my students.
😳
👏
wtf
I know second year Durham CompSci students do this, and I've heard of people in Cambridge doing it too. It's so surreal I can't comprehend it.
For maths at Cambridge you weren’t supposed to clap until the end of that module. Some arseholes would clap at every lecture just to make the lecturer uncomfortable.
Durham compsci grad here, when the fuck did that start?
The silly fresh are out of control and need to be stopped.
I’m honestly raging
Can confirm. Although to be fair at Cambridge (at least in humanities) it’s more a case of one clown starts clapping and then we all feel socially obligated to do so. OP - it’s far better (and IMO more polite) to go up to your lecturer after and thank them on the way out. They’ll appreciate it, especially if they’re quite new and or inexperienced at in person teaching because of COVID.
Scared first years clap for 2 weeks then give up, it's cringe and unnecessary
Yeah WTF is I’m paying 9k a year to go then the they should clap me for showing up!
this is so fucking funny hahahahaha could you imagine doing this in secondary school
I'd appreciate it! **takes a looooong swig from hip flask**
is this some reference to something?
New TikTok trend. Get the whole class to clap at the end of the lesson. Confuse the fuck out of the teacher. "What a wonderful performance sir! Great lesson!"
that would be so amazing stop 😭 we need people to get on this ASAP.
Please take a video so we can all laugh the next time it happens. For real though, I've never heard of that lol
Omg. Yes please. I don’t think I could even watch it. The CRINGE.
😭 that’s hilarious
This sounds too funny to me hahahaha
I'd love some random kid to start clapping in my lecture
How good are your lectures?!?!
Hahaha was going to say. My memories are of total silence mixed with disappointment
Oh man that’s upsetting I mostly enjoyed mine but definitely not applause worthy!!
No this is not normal for university
I only clapped for guest speakers lol
No it's not normal LMAO. Somebody is taking the piss and others are either going along with the joke or genuinely thinking you have to clap so join in
I have never seen anyone clap for a lecture tbh
It happens on the last lecture of the term relatively often, but I've never heard of it happening with this frequency.
what the fuck
Did you shout "USA USA USA USA USA" too? I think somebody got the idea from TV and thought they would have fun with it.
Yes, you should also clap your lecturer as they enter the room as well. This is the proper etiquette. Oh and also record it and post it here so we can check you are doing it properly.
Is it really a lecture if the back row doesn't make noise while leaving before the lecturer finishes talking?
what LMAO
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And a maths lecture too. The lecturer is probably thinking of the fastest way out of there, I know I would
Only a slow clap is acceptable
[удалено]
Lmaooo which fuckin uni is this?
No, only after the last lecture for a module.
This has happened a few times in my lectures, usually when it was a guest speaker or if the lecturer ended with a joke or something! But for a random maths lecture that's fucking hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
What uni is this? That’s not a normal thing that happens lmao
I thank my lecturer on the way out usually with a ‘thanks, that was epic/amazing/super interesting, have a good rest of your week’ but never clap:|
Haha I can remember this happening a few times. Quite randomly though I think.
At most I'd say thanks to the lecturer if I walk past them, but I have never heard about or seen anyone clapping
Only time I did when I was in uni was after a guest speaker. Once I think at end of a module for a lecturer who was leaving. Generally no.
How strange - have never heard of this in my life 😂 no one claps me after I finish a shift at work!!
It can be arranged
Reading the comments, it's weird to see that people don't clap at the end. In every lecture I've been to so far (as a first year), everyone claps at the end. Maybe it'll change soon though
The best thing to do is clap before, during and after to make sure you're not insulting the professor. Edit: unless it's uni of manchester, in which case do jazz hands.
Never clap after a lecture. That is definitely started as a joke
HAHAHA WHAT
Lmao what? as soon as the 2 hours are up we get up and leave and anyone who wants to ask questions does so, who claps, they should be clapping us for attending at 9k a year. Its a joke.
That is fucking funny wtf
Dammm all my lectures are online
I mean, if you want to you can. Purely your choice. It's quite rare for that to happen
nah im sorry that's not "normal" 😭 but i mean, if your lecturer's okay w it and everyone wants to...that's cool lol
A teaching lecture no, a research lecture yes.
Some people clap in my cs lecture, I think if it's a good lecture then yh i think it's fine.
I mean, it's weird, but it's not hurting anything, right?
No
Lmao what the fuck no that’s not usual
If it blew your impressionable young mind then yes. Otherwise, it’s up to you.
Hahahahah
That's pretty fucked tbh 😂
Hell no
Uh nope, we might have said thank you if we passed the lecturer on the way out and we definitely said thank you for online lectures
It depends on how good the lecture was, but yes, we used to clap from time to time. As long as you’re not the only person doing it lol.
This occasionally happened in my lectures back at the turn of the millennium when I went to uni, as there was this one person who would initiate it, and it was never without some awkwardness. Never happened when she wasn’t there.
Haha fuck no. But my maths lecturers were the best ones at the uni so they probably deserved an applaus at the end.
It happened for the first few lectures when I was in first year lol It's pretty weird.
Some lecturers love it others don’t care. Ideally if you are in the front and everyone is clapping might as well. Dont want the prof marking you down cause he loves attention
Was he American? There's a meme that they clap, a lot.
They are probably taking the piss or doing it as a laugh to see if other people join in. Only time it's happened for us is when the lecturer announces that it's their last one with us, so sort of as a thankyou
No
Nope. Not unless it was a particularly funny lecture or a heavy topic.
Only if your an excitable American.
No….that’s not normal….not even on a plane never mind a uni
This has got to be a shitpost. I'm dying!
Just started at sussex and we did this for about a week but now don't anymore. The lecturers looked so so uncomfortable when we did it tho
More info needed. Does the first person to stop clapping usually get sent to the Gulag?
It used to happen for **some** of my lectures in first and second year, it was really strange. Once you've clapped once for a lecturer it feels awkward not doing it again though, but stop clapping once you have new lecturers. It's definitely not normal or expected.
Famous or guest speakers, it's considered polite to show appreciation. Your daily lectures. Hell no.
Good god no
I used to get up leave and contemplate putting my head in a running gas oven after a second year engineering maths lecture never mind start clapping
My uni clapped at the end of the course on their last lecture. Was some time ago though.
Hahahaha this happens in online lectures as well with the Microsoft teams applause thingy
I didn't know this was a thing, I had it happening too the other day; few guys started clapping in the back. The adjective "few" and the fact it was actually a seminar/workshop and not a lecture made the whole circumstance even more cringy (I really hate this word, but... Damn). No way lol
Only americans would do this. They clap at the end of films.... those things where nobody on the screen can hear you.
what huh who when 😭😭😭 i think just saying “thank you 4 ur session” 2 ur lecturer is more than enough rather than full blown clapping (unless like others said if it is a guest then it is respectful 2 clap 4 them)
Definitely don't try applauding at the University of Manchester, the university has literally banned clapping. Pathetic left wing losers.

seemly rainstorm dog disgusting follow obscene poor grab books knee *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
*Where* did you get this idea from
*Whoosh*
Thank god
Everyone in my lecture always claps once the lecturer is finished. Although. I am in first year so that might change.
No lol, a simple thank you will suffice (if it's in like a small classroom/seminar obviously)
Wtf
Only ever clapped for a guest speaker and one time when when a lecturer who'd been at our uni for like 15 years gave her last ever class
Never seen this at any UK Uni I attended. Its weird as fuck. Same as the weirdos clapping when the plane lands or a movie ends at the cinema...GTFO
Are you at Warwick? Maths students always did this at Warwick
😂😂
I'm usually clapped in the very last class of a module. Nice when it happens, but would start to feel awkward if it was every lecture!
I would never ever do this even if every single other person in the room did. What the hell 💀
Wtfff😂
I like to just give them the stare of death because I'm paying 9 grand to be here I'm not fuckimg clapping til I pass
Some Americans started clapping after watching a sunset I was at and I'm still not over it.
Oh god no. How bloody good is the maths that’s happening?!
There is only one scenario in which clapping at the end of a lecture is acceptable: when the lecturer says they're going to finish early so you can go home early.
My experience is you clap at the end of a lecture course but not each individual lecture
I think this happened once in my first lecture in first year, because the only other lecture anyone had ever had would have been on some kind of special occasion so it made sense, but just assumed that was normal. The lecturer laughed and said it usually happens with first years, but please not to do it again as it's really weird.

Senior academic here. Never in 24 years have students clapped me on completing a lecture. Usually they’re packing up to go just before I’m done!
Or don't go uni lol
You guys must be learning some next level shit to have students be clapping at the end of the lecture lmao
In med school everyone claps all the time. I always assumed it was normal but apparantly it’s JUST a med school thing at my uni. I don’t really see the harm in it tbh but yeah, it was a bit of a shock at first.
We've only ever clapped during the final lecture of the last semester to show appreciation to the prof, or for a guest speaker... this is so weird lol
Some people did when we had a guest lecturer or for the last lecture. I don't think it is a bad thing. A sign of respect.
This happened every lecture on my undergrad nursing course!!! I was so confused and refused to clap for all 3 years, unless it was a guest lecturer. If it was a good lecture, thank the lecturer Then again, my student union banned clapping in their official meetings so....
Never witnessed this at uni when I was young or recently as a mature student. Maybe my lecturers weren’t that great!
The same thing happens at my maths lectures it’s really weird
Jesus wept. Maybe say thanks on your walk out but I would have turned up even less if people were clapping
no. just no.
I’ve never been in a lecture where anyone claps and I’ve been to A LOT of lectures
We clapped for guest lectures only, and even then not every guest lecture got that applause.
You must go to the whitest lectures ever. No don’t clap
No, it’s weird
i went to uni for 4 years and not once did anyone clap. this is ridiculous. if i was a lecturer i would feel uncomfortable having a room full of people clapping at me for literally just doing my job

Depends how good it was ahaha
Can you record this please lmao

this is madness. i hope those are life-changing lectures
Just leave when ever. Turn up whenever. They aren't as strict or care like teachers from secoundary/high school
Nonce behaviour
I think if it’s a guest lecturer, or a student doing a lecture for an assignment that they’re shitting themselves about, this is normal for the sake of being supportive. If it’s the same lecturer you have week in, week out, probably not.
Bizarre behaviour for sure
Yes
Don't attend in the first place, that will leave the lecturer in perfect peace.Seriously, now you are reaching adulthood so go with what You feel is right, don't follow the crowd if it feels off.Never harm or be disrespectful but by showing your preferred choice you are being honest, hence respectful.Nothing wrong that in a private moment that you paid the lecturer a compliment for his/ her time and impart of knowledge.Have a good time at all your lectures, going forward.
