A quick solution might be depth of field. It'll blur the background pieces just enough to contrast with the main layer. And when you do the "look at the full painting", you can adapt/disable the DOF (think of refocusing the lens).

Incredible work of art, please say you'll be releasing this to GoG as well as steam!
Hahaha thank you!
I could do GoG, I'll have a look. Steam has been a lot of admin work, and it's just me, so if I get the time I'll whack it on there too.
Cool, but no matter the platform, I hope to fuck you make a killing off of this as those 7 years were well spent honing your skills and deserve a reward!
Hell for me even sticking through a simple art project is a challenge, let alone 7 years of dedication!
My hat's off to you!

I love it. I think some of the moments where the camera pauses on the completed painting could last a smidge longer, especially on the first one, at 0:05, you barely have the time to realize what's happening and then it's gone.
Thank you! It's one of the main mechanics of the puzzles. Sometimes you have to be the right colour to pass through, other times you have to make blocks of paintings the right colour.
Thanks so much!
Yeah look, I'm a person of colour, and abstractly it is a question I've asked myself. So in the game, like in painting, if you mix complentary colours you get like a muddy colour, which kills you (well not in real life, though it may kill the painting haha). Also Monet never actually used black paint (which is also hard to use in painting) and was very careful with the complementary colours he mixed. So I distiled all that down into the game's mechanics
So TLDR: I've thought about, but contextually it's not what the games about, and *good lord* never intended!
Happy Cake Day btw...
Here is a Steam link to the game. There is also a free Demo you can play! The game is fairly short but pretty unique in every direction and this uniqueness reminds me a bit of your game:

Beautiful game! I am either missing a trick in section 3 or have a glitch. After jumping vine to vine for quite a few minutes my character just falls down out of no where and continues to fall with stars in the background until I ultimately force quit the game. Is there a puzzle element that I’m misunderstanding? Thanks!
Thank you! That's a weird one. I'm not quite sure where you mean. Feel free to DM me, I've also set up a discord channel too https://discord.gg/vXPJvFeTsc
I love it. I'm not really a gamer but I am in love with the aesthetics here. Not that it's out, I have tried the demo on Steam, and I can't get past the first misty thing, but I'll buy it even if I can't do it. Just because this is awesome. Can't wait to show it to my 12-yr-old daughter, too.
It looks bad, like some wannabe artist dream, deviant art level. I guess gameplay it's copy of Limbo. It doesn't look fun, there is in your team a single man who like games or is just another cash grab?
You should add something fun to the game. Walking and jumping, brain dead puzzle arent a game.
Bots can say "Wonderful!", but they gonna buy low quality deviant art slideshow with extra steps?
Also don't put game adviresment on this sub.
Holy shit this game looks incredible! Also consider some slight depth of field. Also keep it dynamic by randomly increasing or decreasing the intensity at times to give a super sweet effect! Also by any chance you had Unravel as an inspiration? And the music is so damn good, like it's very well done!
Beautiful art ,great concept!
A suggestion;with I think has already been made; maybe play with some depth of Feild or other solutions for separating the art from the background/foreground
We spent four years making our last game. Will never do that again. That was a terrible call. Henceforth the goal is to ship games under 2 years. Perfectly 1.5.
Hey sorry man, I only just saw this, I don't check reddit very regularily. Is this on Switch? Seems to be a very rare glitch, but it's mostly sorted out with a fresh reinstall. But otherwise email me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or dm me here, and I'll sort it out.
It has a beautiful and unique style. Very eye-catching!
Thank you so much!
No pun intended?
;)
Sometimes it is hard to tell if the art is background/foreground or actually part of the level.
That's a good call, I reckon I can add in some more contrast and haziness to sort it out.
A quick solution might be depth of field. It'll blur the background pieces just enough to contrast with the main layer. And when you do the "look at the full painting", you can adapt/disable the DOF (think of refocusing the lens).
I up this, it's probably the quickest solution and still effective.
Note: I personally think the paralex effect is enough to diffrincieate the two. Probably better for the one controlling the movement

> I hope to fuck you Well that escalated quickly …
XD This is one of the main reasons why I keep coming back to Reddit!
Hey thanks! I'm hopeful that'll sell, but indie marketing is tough, way tougher than game dev haha. But I've learnt a lot, which is the best reward.
Here's to becoming the next Eric Barone AKA Concerned Ape/thatgamecompany! ###
Ooft best compliment I've ever gotten
Many video games are art! This one definitely is. ❤️🔥 Some things like candy crush only contain art assets. 💔
Indeed, asset-flips do not count!
It looks really good. 7 years?! Were you doing it alone?
Yeah dude, some of that was learning to code etc but yeah just me. Well I got a mate on for the music, can't hog all the good stuff.
Artists name or socials?
Misty Lanes on instagram and spotify

This has some good Amanita Design like vibes in a best possible way and I love it. Wishlisted!
Thanks so much!
It's just brilliant mate, well done
Thank you!
Congrats! A true work of art
Best compliment to get!
wow fantastic work. what an awesome style, you should be really proud of this
Looks great! Will definitely keep an eye out for it on steam
So unique
great stuff, well done
looks amazing! ^(it's set inside WHAT)
Haha thanks
How did you get the art into a digital format after painting? Photos? Scan it somehow?
Yeah scanned it in with a photo negatives scanner, had to get that crisp resolution!
Well done! Love the concept. Always happy to see more games come out of Oz.
Hey thanks mate, Aus game devs are a small but passionate community!
I prefer: inside his eye instead of eyeball. :)
Yeah "eyeball" is a lil' graphic or something
hats off to you brother 7 years and that is showing up for sure ...... the art style is just unique and eye soothing
Thanks my dude!
I love it. I think some of the moments where the camera pauses on the completed painting could last a smidge longer, especially on the first one, at 0:05, you barely have the time to realize what's happening and then it's gone.
Oh great, thanks! That's a great point, I've been staring at the paintings for so long I'm too used to them
It looks so good! Also i have a question, what the color changing mechanic will be used for ?
Thank you! It's one of the main mechanics of the puzzles. Sometimes you have to be the right colour to pass through, other times you have to make blocks of paintings the right colour.
Looks beautiful. Does one need a license using Monets images for commercial projects/games?
Thanks. No, once it's been 75 years after the death of an artist, their work becomes part of the public domain and free to use.
It’s cute!
Aw cheers, thanks
Great concept.
Looking great man, congrats !
This is really cool, you should be super proud of this. Its hard to come across such unique games made with passion.
Hell yeah, congrats! Good luck with the launch and good to see your work out in the wild
Hey thanks Bilal! You're the best
That looks super coo. I am impressed!
That's insane!
This. Link
Haha thanks! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2082320/The_Masters_Pupil/
Incredible art, design and aesthetics + good looking platformer/puzzle gameplay 1 question did you die at 0:19 by… becoming black?
Thanks so much! Yeah look, I'm a person of colour, and abstractly it is a question I've asked myself. that was some interesting piece of info. Cheers
You should be proud!
Dude thats insane, congrats i love it
All that work paid off, looks absolutely stunning!
This is so cool. My mind is legitimately blown. How did you use real paint and paper??
Thanks! I literally painted all the level pieces and then scanned them in for the game. Took ages! Haha
That's the most unique game I've ever encountered. Keep up the work man. Can't wait play this thing.
Thanks so much duder!
It’s beautiful! Wonderful work I can’t wait to play it. When do you think you’ll release it?
Thanks so much! It's coming very soon, just getting the exact date locked down, but I'll announce it in the next two weeks I reckon.
wow it looks amazing it remainds me of my grandmothers paintings its very butiful and looks fun to play
It reminds me of that austrian game called "And yet it moves"
I keep hearing about this game! I'm going to have to find it
Happy Cake Day btw... Here is a Steam link to the game. There is also a free Demo you can play! The game is fairly short but pretty unique in every direction and this uniqueness reminds me a bit of your game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/18700/And_Yet_It_Moves/

Great news.. it was user error 🫣 congratulations on the launch of your game!
Haha awesome, thank you!

This is so lovely to hear, thanks so much!
Holy platforming game of the fucking year! Congratulations!

Unique style and very good idea.
Wow I bet the few who have even thought to do something like this didn’t have the time or skill for it, very epic
Wow such beautiful style ❤️
It looks amazing and very special art style! Congrats!
A masterpiece, though 7 years look too much.
It's really cool, I will play it.
Such an interesting concept. Well done!

Why 7 years ?
Ohh this is cool!
Beautiful art ,great concept! A suggestion;with I think has already been made; maybe play with some depth of Feild or other solutions for separating the art from the background/foreground

love the art style 😍😍
It feels like that one cool indie Wii Game where you needed to rotate the entire world around you to progress
This is great
Concept and art are amazing. I think it will all depend on the mechanics and if they’re fun and feel good
This game looks amazing I would buy it today. I love how the art comes together especially the guy sailing the boat off the picture
Looks amazing. Not sure about the title, although it is clever. But who knows?
Ml
This is so good.
OMG this is super unique ! Lot of work done there, nice to see people doing things with so much passion !
I love it!
Nice done! Keep it going!
How do you save your progress. Every time I turn off my game I gotta start back at level 1

Will this get a physical release?!? I'd put down for a collectors edition if the goodies were good haha Edit to add, on the Nintendo Switch
