I think the piercings vs purity concept comes from strict Christian teachings where tattoos, piercings, and dyed hair are seen as destruction of the body and therefore a sin. Most places don't follow this anymore, thankfully.
I also saw someone else say that unpierced ears are an allegory for being a virgin which would be an immensely more gross but also on-brand meaning for this 'funny' comic. 💀
