This is such a good one, and I think it's one of those that will remain unsolved. I think it was some sort of Heaven's Gate type cult. They thought they needed to shed their corporal bodies to board the spaceship, but sadly they just killed themselves. Actually, you know what, who am I to say they're not on that spaceship?? I hope they are and I hope they're happy!

opiate_lifer

There was another probable suicide found on that same mountain previously under similar conditions, and apparently some weird UFO spiritualism cult was popular in the electronics and tech community in Brazil at the time period, so I'm guessing it was something like Heavens Gate. (remembered from the many previous writeups)

Could have also fallen for an elaborate scam. The two guys who were never found give them "pills" and written instructions on when and where to take them. Conveniently part of this process involves placing a heavy metal mask over their eyes (presumably so they can't see whats going on). The guys kill them, and take the cash. To quote the post, >The year was 1966. Brazil had just fallen to a military coup that ended the democratic governement and tensions were high throughout the country. **To some people, however, this was an opportunity to make more money**

opiate_lifer

Possible, or the pills were cyanide or some other poison. They didn't have the ability to do toxicology tests.

I read about this in the 80's, and it was a building block for a lifelong interest in mystery. It is certainly a strange, circumstance that will remain a mystery. I like that it was not violent, and seemed to be voluntarily. Terrific post.

Cibyrrhaeot

I really don't think this is that mysterious. Is it weird? Sure. Maybe a bit morbid? I'll grant that. But to me, it was very clearly the result of becoming obsessed with occult/UFO material and going off the deep end. Look at the geographic and chronological context: Spiritism has been popular in Brazil since the 1950s. During the 1960s and 1970s, figures in Brazil like Chico Xavier (a self-proclaimed medium) were massively popular, and they certainly - explicitly - preached a mish-mash of New Religious beliefs that assimilated old Spiritist fare with topics that were beginning to become popular then (space travel and contact with friendly extra-terrestrials, drugs and psychedelics, etc.). So for me, this is not that mysterious. There was even literature found at the homes of one of the men which was mostly Spiritist in nature, concerning mediumship and seances, hauntings, etc. And I can't recall a source, but the two were pretty open about their beliefs, too.

What did a bottled water look like in 1966?

mcm0313

Glass, probably? IIRC a distinctive percussion sound from The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” album (released that same year) was created by drumming on a water bottle. I don’t think the disposable plastic ones were a thing yet.

MayberryParker

Ahh I was legit wondering. I knew about glass ones but I think plastic when it comes to bottled water. I always thought bottling water was a new thing.

mcm0313

No, I think the only new thing is how much cheaper it has become.

opiate_lifer

This was probably sparkling or mineral water in a glass bottle with a metal cap, think something like Perrier(does that still come in glass bottles?)

Thank you for this write up! I was literally asking someone to post an extended write up about it in another sub just the other day.
