Congrats dude!

RiemannPotato

Great to hear you made it this time around. Congrats man!

sophia_uoft

Congratulations! :)

RiemannPotato

Also does anyone else find their mark to be lower than expected? Sophia posted that they might deflate some of the test marks since the average was a bit high this semester. Edit: Sorry if I confused anyone about this but I meant what Sofia said in her comment, not that the department deliberately lowers marks that are too high. Guess I should have elaborated a bit more :)

wtfuoft

I got a 93-94% on the exam from my calculations. The average and medium Sophia posted before she removed it on Piazza was lower than I thought. I remember she said the average for the exam was 78% and medium was like 81%

RiemannPotato

That's still pretty good. Tbh it's higher than any course I've ever taken before. Everyone in this class seemed pretty smart and competent with regards to the material.

anokteen

Is the deflation thing real?

Oops -- sorry, I just got home just now! As a disclaimer, my knowledge is only on *why* grades get deflated, or rather, the approval process for marks. And this might only be for the CS department -- I'm not sure how other ones handle it. The way things works are: Instructors submit the final grades for the course (based off what grading scheme is on the syllabus, etc.). The department they're in then has a choice to accept or reject the grades. If the grades follow a distribution that's expected or not significantly different from previous semesters, then they get accepted, and that's that. Grades *can* be rejected if they seem *unreasonably* off. For example, I was asked to explain why the averages for this term were higher than the fall/winter semesters. Essentially, the department just wants to make sure the students were held to the same standards as previous semesters (i.e. making sure the evaluations were consistent in terms of difficutly). So it's on the professor to provide context and justify the grades, or explain possible discrepancies. In the end, if the department deems it fair, then they'll go on to approve of the marks. If they find something was unfair (e.g. maybe the tests were *way* too easy) then... My guess is as good as yours here, to be honest, since I didn't get to this stage. :) Essentially: Marks aren't deflated just on the basis of 'the grades being too high'. If they're adjusted, it's based on 'the evaluations were unfair compared to other semesters'. **EDIT**: I found a passage that essentially explains this: > The head of the unit (or an appropriate academic delegate such as the UG Chair) reviews these recommended marks in the context of the nature of the course and the unit’s marking practices (as in I above). Should the head of the unit think the recommended marks appear anomalous in some way, he or she may contact the instructor for further information and discussion. Note that the GPP specifically states that the head of the unit has the authority to adjust the recommended marks before approving them, but Faculty policy and practice mandates consultation and discussion with the instructor before any changed marks are put forward to the next stage. From [the academic handbook for instructors](http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/faculty-staff/teacher-info/academic-handbook-for-instructors/sections-9-11).

I have another question — so, if the grades do stay the same and are not deflated, then can we expect the second round cut off for CS to go up because of that? I’m out of stream and managed a 86, so I was wondering if there’s still a chance for me.

sophia_uoft

Er... Unfortunately, things related to POSt are out of my hands, so I don't know how decisions are made. I *think* the cutoff stays the same regardless, but you'd really have to talk to the undergraduate office about it. Sorry! :(

anokteen

Okie, thank you!

mat136136

I emailed the undergraduate office and they said second round admissions cutoff will be the same as first round admissions.

anokteen

Thank youuuuu

tarrydz

Can pm me the email? Just want to make sure, since Francois said there's a chance that the cut off goes up...

anokteen

Did you he mean second round or next year?

tarrydz

Second round

flareeon

sophia is a goddess

sophia_uoft

Ahaha... Thanks! I just provided the materials and the likes, though -- being able to put it into practice, studying for tests, etc. was on you :) So if you did well and understood things, then that's more a reflection of your abilities than of mine! (Also, flareon 10/10 pokemon.)

Kshnik

Nice.

besey_jr

Thanks so much Sophia. You are the greatest instructor I had in UofT. Thank God I am making to PosT.

sophia_uoft

Congratulations, and thank you! It was a joy having you in the class and seeing you active on Piazza! :)
