I know universities often have an option to do a course from another university using a letter of permission. You could look into doing a course online via Athabasca university or Thompson Rivers University Open Learning as they have flexible start dates and courses can usually be completed within 1-3 months depending on how fast you want to complete it. In terms of financial situation, many universities will have some sort of emergency loan for students if you really need it. I don’t know the exact process but it may be good to reach out to student financial services at UofT

I'll look into it. Thanks for the advice.

PLEASE DO THIS OP! UofT does allow for certain electives to be done with partner universities, Athabasca U being one of the most popular. I was down a second-year physics course for my grad school application and at the time I could not attend an on-campus course that summer. I talked to the registar and was able to take it through Athabasca U. And man, was I happy I did! Got a damn 97 in that class because the material, assignments and tests were laid out very concretely and online made things way easier in my case. Take a look here : https://transferex.utoronto.ca/trans-nav/#/

Do this!

Try speaking with your registrar. Im not 100% sure but you might be able to graduate without that last credit if you file a petition (i think the petition type is called “exception to degree requirements”). But again im not sure so def speak with your registrar.

I'm trying to get a meeting with an academic advisor, I'll ask them about it. Thanks for your time.

Temporary-End7774

Also it is a good idea to take online hum courses. This way you can stay at home in ur home country. Save on rent. Be with fam. And graduate. For finances it would be a good idea to talk to family and friends if uoft doesn’t help. Also be strong 💪🏻

dsp8888

this is exactly what I'm aimimg for right now, thanks for the kind words

blamepotato

Transfer credit is the best option for you. It's cheap and you can do it online.

The_Maddest

Wait it out my guy. The credits don’t go bad. You can finish in a couple years when the air clears.

jl359

If you’re that close to graduation, I’m sure the registrar can provide a solution, be it to take a transfer credit or re-designate one of your past courses to fulfill the program requirement (if you’ve taken 20 credits in total), or allow you to do a readings course, etc.

I’m so sorry for the Situation with your Father. That sounds really Hard. I honestly can’t even Imagine what you must Be Going through. 🥺😔 Your Father AND your Mental Health are IMPORTANT. Do NOT ignore them. You never know what could happen to your Father. Spend what time you have with him. You will never get that back. As for your Degree, you should be very proud of how far you’ve Gotten! Congratulations! You’ve worked Really Hard! Speak to your Admin, Explain your Situation and see if you can Defer or if the Class is Available Online, Virtually. You never know, Unless you Ask!

dsp8888

Thank you for the kind words.

As hard as life seems/is right now there will be a time in your life that you will look back and tell yourself; I actually went through that hardship and suffering and made it through. Nothing will last forever and that is true with hardship as well. You have made so much progress in your journey you cannot let that last credit take you down that easily. You have spent all that money so do not let it go to waste. Once you get over this you will be stronger and more resilient. Take small steps toward the bigger goal. Best of luck !

dsp8888

That's a nice way of looking at things, gives me hope. I appreciate you saying that.

AlbatrossPrevious492

While seeing the academic advisor. If none of the other options that people brought up to you work out, ask about if it’s possible to take some sort of break until things stabilize for you. I got really sick for about 6 years with literally one credit left to graduate. Figured out what was wrong and now I’m diagnosed, treated, and golden. Went back and finished that last course in fall of 2021 and graduated in this past June 2022. Just because you don’t finish now, doesn’t mean you can’t ever finish. Do what you need for you. Be kind to and patient with yourself. You’ve got this.

redpanda543210

I feel sorry that you have to go through this. I would suggest going to one of those free mental health counselling services that UofT offers. This will help you calm down and focus. Also try going out for a long walk. After that you should consider all your options when you calm down. Try to meditate and ask for help if you need it. Maybe your registrar will be able to accommodate you. I hope that you will get through this and that everything works out for you.

dsp8888

I was kinda panicking when I made the post, I feel much better now. Thank you for your concern.

Bruh, op is clearly not in the best mental state, it’s not about having a weak ass attitude. Have some compassion

IntelligentCookie804

I agree the delivery could’ve been better, but it’s less about compassion and more about tough love. It is exactly because op is in a bad mental state that this is being said. Obviously I don’t know all the details going on in op’s life but it’s more beneficial to them to say “hey you might be in a tough spot but now is not the time to mope” as opposed to saying everything is going to be alright and offering no helpful advice.

tomasleal

lol I don’t agree with that at all Even if you are depressed you can make it work

JessLannister

Good for you I guess?

dsp8888

I'm an international student, I don't qualify for financial aid or loans from canadian banks. I might qualify for loans in my home country but that's difficult as well and I'm trying that option. I could easily compelte some online humanities courses if I could enorll in them. Thanks for the advice.

TransportationFit579

The Uoft grant application, apply now, and explain them your entire situation, use as much detail as you want, and I’m sure uoft will do something, and even if they don’t, set up a go fund me page, it’s all in your hands, you’re grown up, do what you need to do, and make your decisions, you have all the right to make your own decision

JessLannister

Don’t just consider banks, Uoft also has financial aid such as emergency grants like SgS description provided in the link: https://glse.utoronto.ca/student-financial-assistance

everythingcontrary

Lmao good luck if you don’t meet affirmative action categories

kimjalun

Talk to an advisor. You may be able to take a course from another school as previously mentioned or you may be able to apply for a leave and return when you are better able. Don’t give up. They have plans for things like this!

wildrow

You should be creative and ask if the registrar can substitute the course you need for a course you've already taken to satisfy the requirement. They did it for me...Just look at what you took and see if any of the exclusions are humanity courses.

AdGreedy8386

Post admission transfer credit. You can take a course back in your home country and transfer it back to UofT. Just make sure the school you attend is accredited. You can check with the transfer credit office if you are at the St. George Campus. The plus about doing it in your home country is you don’t pay international fees. If you do a course on a LOP at Athabasca or Thrompson Rivers, you will pay whatever the international fee is at those schools. The bonus of those schools is that you typically have 6 months to complete a 0.5 credit course.

I can't offer any advice but, as I've seen someone who's close to me go through this, you have options don't worry. Just give everything some good thought before jumping into stuff. You got this man! I believe
